Are you with Chavez, who considered banning it for its morally degenerate influence on the Venezuelan masses, or with Carlitos Tevez who posts videos of himself dancing to it on youtube and when in Venezuela asked about Chavez's threat, answered simply "es un gil" ("he's a douche/nob" - delete according to side of atlantic you live on).*
reggaaeton is music made by lumpens with almost always reactionary lyrics (calle 13 is a slight exception), and it is listened to especially by lumpens and rich people who like it as an 'ironic' (i.e., too ahsamed to admit how much they really like it) shameful excess on a weekend while showing that they are different to people who listen to it "seriously", like rich people who take drugs and then despise junkies. At least in Argentina that is the case.
However, few people resist it once it is being played - though in my experience communists have higher resistance than most - perhaps the knowledge of the nefarious social values it represents outweigh the rush that comes from a mix of outpouring of sentimentality, sadness and nostalgia, linked with a thumping base and set to fast tempo and bittersweet melody.
*All this happened long ago, but it is only now I have gained enough courage to wake this demon which is sweeping the globe but has so far been absent from the music forum.
for reference here is carlitos tevez, the argentina and manchester united football player who came out of a slum to beone of the world's richest sportsmen, dancing it (followed by a real treat at the end ):

Yes, reggaeton is total crap.

Go Chavez go! Ban it! The end of civilisation is nigh.
Seriously though, Chavez sounds much like the Pope when the Vatican outlawed tango in the 20s for the same reasons.
I don't know a lot of reggaeton, but Ivy Queen rules.

I have no idea what she sings about since I don't speak Spanish. Do you?

I mean people with a lumpen outlook, who are individualist, homophobic, misogynistic, corrupt, have no sense of solidarity, etc.
It seemed to be about missing a boyfreind, though it's lyrics are not quite up there with the greats. 50cent began to seem like Bob Dylan after less than a minute of that song.:glare:

Although it makes me want to stab my ears with a rusty screwdriver, banning music especially because of some moralistic rubbish is just plain dumb.

the "ban it" option is obviously not completely serious...
Wisin & Yandel called their new album "La Revolucion" which is funny. because their new single is some st00pid shit called Mujeres en el Club. And they say "La Revolucion" in the video. the video is nice though.
revolution of what? the club?
though they did have a socially conscious song called "Donde esta el amor", but then again the Black Eyed Peas had a song called "Where is the love' and they ended up making a song about humps and lumps.

It's not all bad y'all, yes there are some performers that are super misogynistic and what not, but others are not really. Zion Y Lennox aren't socially conscious by any stretch of the imagination, but neither are they even close to as chauvinistic, this song, for example, is calling on a girl to get out of an abusive relationship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0feQlJuscqE
This one isn't bad either, Kartier raps about how a girl obsessed with material things isn't happy and is "empty."

However. the dark side of Reggaeton does exist and take over the industry.

Haha. Overall Reggaeton isn't any worse than Hip Hop; there are some really bad elements of it that generally get the most attention, but there's also some that's just mindless fun and a little bit that's much more radical/progressive (though Hip Hop has notably more of that).

Most reggaeton song are crap and are usually generic, I only have 120 songs of it. I prefer cumbia over reggaeton anytime.
Well, Ivy Queen, she has this one song, which is like a commentary on gender, about men and their emotions.

There are different types of Cumbia depending on where it originated from. Cumbia Sonidera from Mexico is very different from Cumbia Colombiana. Sonidera has more deliberate beats and uses more synthesizers and indigenous instruments, Colombian sounds more Caribbean. But if you have a good ear for music you can tell the difference between Cumbia and Reggaeton by whether or not it's a 2/4 meter (Cumbia) or a 4/4... That first song "Ven Bailalo" is actually closer to Bachata than it is to Cumbia, since it features a Requinto guitar, which is ALWAYS the lead instrument in Bachata. Cumbia rarely features guitars and it's melodic section is usually dominated by horns or woodwinds.

the video was of Tevez was the Angel y Kris song "Ven Bailalo", reggaeton mix. Cumbia has a different rhythm. There is however a video of Tevez dancing cumbia on the internet to the same background. :)
