Inspired by this thread in Politics (http://www.revleft.org/vb/showthread.php?t=109061) concerning sodomisation of children at Abu Ghraib.

Does anyone else get this? Ever since joining Revleft way back in the day, I've found it really hard to get emotionally involved in "bad news". That is to say, I've heard so much about injustice and cruelty and humans generally being shitty to each other that it no longer gets a visceral reaction out of me the way it used to. Occasionally, like in the thread above, I'll hear something that will get a "what the fuck" reaction, but with greatly diminished rancor. Such things are terrible and should of course be opposed, but my reaction is more intellectual than emotional.

Maybe I'm just getting old?

I think its more of a lack of suprise and things like that and an acceptance of that this kinda shit just happens under capitalism.

what Comrade Joe said
i'd heard of raping members of someone's family to torture them before so i expected it to happen at abu ghraib to, so there's no surprise for me in this. I get surprised that other people are surprised by this stuff because i tend to forget that people don't always know about the same things as me.

Uhm, I think that's actually called desensitization. World-weariness is when all the horrible shit going on around you actually does take its toll on you, I believe

wea·ry : exhausted in strength, endurance, vigor, or freshness

Cmde. Mantis is right, it's called desensitization. Because of the current level of information being globally transmitted through our generation, desensitization is more common.

In that case, yes, I feel horribly world-weary.

We have to be angry, it is what fixes things. If we are calm, easy going people, we would have great deal of difficulty getting the rage necessary to take some of the steps we will need to to remove the plague of capitalism from the world.

It's hard to be angry when you hear this kind of shit all the time. Also, anger clouds judgement.

I find it easier to be constantly angry unless someone tells me some good news.

I do still get upset about it, though not near as much as I used to.

Death, suffering, and misery are so common today, and so apparent to those who actually put the effort in to knowing these things that one could not possible be deeply and emotionally involved in each case or one could not function.
