First off this is a great song. I watched a documentry about it last night, and that's what brought it to mind.

I'm wondering if it gets played all over the place every christmas, or is it just Ireland?

Quite soon now, it's going to be played on every radio station in Ireland at least 50 or 60 times a day, and although it is a fantastic song, it's going to wreck my head.

I also want to say that Shane McGowan is an ugly fucker, but very talanted.

Actually it's quite a shite song, it's just one that sticks in your head and you love it because it's so bad.

Not at all you crazy bastard. It is a great song. It's great because it isn't your typical christmas happy crappy crap......

It's a load of bollocks but having said that I'll probably be singing it for the next 2 or 3 months.

I liked Christy Moore's rendition of it too.

I 've never heard their version. I kinda like the song, though. It's always played over here, in pubs and what not. Sing alongs etc.

If I Should Fall From Grace With God by The Pogues is admittedly a great album and underrated in their back catalogue really. It's a far stronger album that Pogue Mahone and the bands output after Shane was kicked out. I do not think that 'Fairytale of New York' is even the best song on the album as I far rather 'South Australia'.

Although my favourite and probably most peoples is Rum Sodomy and the Lash because of classic songs like 'Wild Cats of Kilkenny', 'Dirty Old Town', 'Jesse James', 'Billy's Bones' and of course the most emotive song on the album 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'.

Did anybody else really ever get into Shane MacGowans act The Popes afterwards that he created to put it up 'em for kicking him out?

I love Gace of God and that's a great song, IMO.
Good stuff.

Never heard it on the radio, though.

I thought the Snake was a great album, Crock of Gold had its moments but not Shanes's best work that's for sure. As for FONY, I really like the song. You won't hear it on the radio in the states unless you listen to college radio. The punk band No Use for a Name also did a cover of this song.
