i hate math. i was gonna minor in math but now i dont think i will do it because its really boring. i thought i was getting a 2 in differential equations but i got a 3.5 (A B+ which is pretty good for upper level math). maybe because i am a one man army and i can make miracles. it means i can probably do it but its so boring. i never went to class and i didnt have a textbook so i learned the stuff from the internet. Maybe because I learned it incorrectly and never bothered to understand differential equations i hate it. actually i think i only hate differential equations, calculus was fine. people who hate math post

The only math teacher I ever had that made me enjoy math and actually learn died halfway through the semester.

the funny thing is that i dont really mind it in my physics classes. I took some upper level stuff last semester and it was riddled with stuff I had to derive from first principles and a lot of it is just good ol' calculus. I like it because I think it makes me understand the concepts better. I just dont care about learning adhoc tricks to solving equations I will never solve by hand 'cuz for that there are computers. I care more about the concepts.

I've done alot of pure maths in college. It is sinfully boring. Dreadfully, dreadfully mind numbingly irrelevant boring shit. And very hard. Just my opinion of course. I would stick to physics.

I struggle with maths, yet one of my goals in life is to gain a degree in Physics. Until I get on to a decent maths course I'm practicing doing arithmatic in my head when I go shopping.

It's interesting how one is seen as an idiot if her or she says, "I hate reading," or "I don't know history," but a lack of awareness/fondness with math seems acceptable.

Not personally insulting anyone, just thinking about it.

Well, history and reading are, I think, a bit more straight forward than most maths.

Maths bores me to death too, having said that I must be objective and say, when I did it a lot it did sharpen my brain up in other respects too. I don't think it's purposeless but it should come secondary to other topics as mentioned above.

I hate math, and I know why. It only has rights and wrongs. There is no room for interpitation and general wondering of things. You just learn it, or you dont. The big waste in all this is the fact that I would be quite talented if I actually bothered to try math. I dont.

I share the same qualms about math as others here. I aspecially dislike how math teachers and geeks can't explain what it is for and why it is relevant or could become relevant, specifically as to the kind of math one is suposed to learn. I've always felt so awfully alienated in math classes.

I must admit I do have a sick suspicion of mathamatics. But isn't math supposed to be sensible and logical, then why does it come off as not being so?

I dont think that the particular problem is due to math itself, but rather the people who are supposed to teach math. I know my teachers are having a hard time explaining things in a way that satisfies me, but my dad can clear things up with a few sentences.

Its propably because people who are math geniouses tend to think in patterns and formations, and similarly try to explain everything as patterns and formations. I dont think they really care about relevance and practical explanations, or then they just cant express the relevance quite clearly.

Just my thoughts.

I dont have anything about math in itself, after all it is VERY useful for society. But lets just say that I'll run the factory and would prefer if someone intrested would do the calculations.

i dont think dont think i would mind it if i had a fucking clue what was going on. like give me something generally basic and ill just stare at it for ages waiting for enlightenment or an epiphany its just so stupid (or i am ;)). i got a B in my last exams but i was doing loads of study and grinds, the whole shebang so i kinda deserved it. im dropping down to ordinary level next year thats for sure!! what i dont get is why the hell people chose to do applied maths!!!

Btw I think any man who does not want to be a philistine needs to take atleast Calculus I. There is no double standard. Calculus is the blood of the sciences and if you atleast have not had a glimpse on it and can actually learn it (Some people dont have access to this sort of education) you should do it.

Arithmetic has very little do to with this type of stuff btw. Well you need to be somewhat proficient at it but that is why there are calculators. I generally add up to three digits plus three digits in my brain, but I generally just multiply at most 2 digits times 2 digits in my brain, except for some easy stuff (like 500 times 100).

Still, I can't help but feel I need the mental exercise.

Im doing a maths course through the OU, but ive made a last minute descision to take advantage of their suspended study program and return to my syllabus in October.

I hate these arbitrary assignment deadlines.

I worked as a circuit design engineer at IBM for 18 years, and the only math I ever used on the job was 9th grade algebra. For everything else, the computer ran simulations and printed the answers. The company also gave me a year off, with full pay plus an expense account, to go to graduate school, where I studied even more calculus-based physics and engineering, but I don't know why they sent me there. I never needed any of it to do the job.

I had to re-do my GCSE Maths exam twice, eventually ending up with a very high D that was just under a C. Whilst I was doing so, I got an A-Level in English and English Literature.
