I thought some of Gouldner's sociological interpretations of Marxism were thought-provoking if deeply flawed. He analyzes Marxism through the eye of Kuhn's paradigm shift. He sees Marxism as representing the ideaology of the rising New Class of technocrats separate from both the bourgeoisie and working class.

He sees environmentalism as an example of the engineering class pushing its own agenda against the opposition of both the bourgeoisie and the proletarian. He argued that the Democrat-Republican split in the USA was along old capitalist New class lines.
