Is anybody able to translate the song "Hasta Siempre (Comandante Che Guevara)" or refer me to an already translated version of it. I have tried to do it myself, but my spanish vocabulary is very limited, and I am worried that online translation sources won't capture the context. I play guitar and want to learn the song, but would like to know what I am singing first. Any advice would be very helpful.

The lyrics are:

Aprendimos a quererte
desde la històòrica el tura
donde el sol de tu bravura
le puso cerco a la muerte.

(Chorus)
Aquìì se queda la clara
la entraññable transparencia
de tu querida presencia
Comandante Che Guevara.

Tu mano gloriosa y fuerte
sobre la historia dispara
cuando todo Santa Clara
se despierta para verte.

<Chorus>

Vienes quemando la brisa
con soles de primavera
para plantar la bandera
con la luz de tu sonrisa.

<Chorus>

Tu amor revolucionario
te conduce a nueva empresa
donde esperan la firmeza
de tu brazo libertario.

<Chorus>

Seguiremos adelante
como junto a ti seguimos
y con Fidel te decimos
Hasta siempre, Comandante !

<Chorus>

"Hasta Siempre Comandante" (1965) Carlos Puebla

We learned to love you
From historical heights
Were the sun of your courage
Put you close to death.

Here remains your clear,
Heart-warming transparency
Of your beloved presence
Comandante Che Guevara.

Your glorious and strong hand
Takes a shot at history
When whole of Santa Clara
Awakens to see you.

You come burning the breeze
With suns of spring
To plant the flag
With the light of your smile.

Your revolutionary love
Leads you to a new enterprise
Where waits the firmness
Of your liberating arm.

We shall go on
As together we follow you
And as Fidel we say
Till forever comandante.

Here remains your clear,
Heart-warming transparency
Of your beloved presence
Comandante Che Guevara.

Thanks to Kodzoquo!!

I downloaded a few versions of this song, but one i really enjoy is by Chico Barque and Luis Eduardo Aute which is recorded live in Argentina. Even tho the recording itself isn't great quality, the passion of the crowd is absolutely awesome and totally inspiring. I am a university student right now, but have been singing and playing guitar for about 9 years, and have played a couple gigs, etc. I am putting together a demo cd this winter (of originals and a couple covers) and i really wanted to include this song; just vocals and guitar. Now that i know what the song is saying i want to do this even more! Thanks so much.

Does anybody know when exactly the song was originally written and by whom? I'm assuming it was after the Guevara's death, but I'm not certain. I was just wondering how this fit in with the context of the times.

Manzanillo, Cuba, (September 11, 1917), Havana, Cuba, (July 12, 1989). He’s one of the most representative figures in the Cuban popular music since he could reflect the essence of an époque, turning himself into a musical chronicler of the most relevant events of the contemporary Cuban revolutionary process. He composed around 200 songs and boleros.

Important Cuban musicians such as Blanca Rosa Gil, Barbarito Diez and Clara y Mario duet have interpreted his works. Puebla became known first as a soloist, interpreting his own works and then accompanied by Los Tradicionales trio, formed at that time by Santiago Martinez (second guitar player and second voice), Rafael Lorenzo (marímbula and shoe polish can) and Nero Guada (maracas); substituted in 1961 by Pedro Sosa. During the years 70 and 80, Octavio Abreu and Enrique Ochoa substituted Lorenzo and Sosa respectively. This instrumental format was the proper interpretative mean for the composer to make his work public and the group was directed by him until a year before his death.

Works composed
Hasta siempre, Canto a Camilo, Y en eso llegó Fidel, Si no fuera por Emiliana, Quiero hablar contigo, Qué sé yo, Cuenta conmigo.

In his repertoire we can also find marches, hymns, tangos, lullabies, sons, boleros, and songs in general conforming the most varied rhythmic and melodic repertoire.
