"Mos Def to Play Bob Marley! - October 15, 2002
Big news: roberto brought my attention to a newsbit on DarkHorizons.com that states "DreamWorks has put a biopic about reggae icon Bob Marley on the fast track with Mos Def in the role of the famed musician. Based on the biographical book of the same name, the choice of Mos Def is not only due to his blossoming film career ("Brown Sugar", "The Italian Job", etc.) but his very Marley-esque vocals in the single "Umi Says". Production is expected to begin in early 2003 with the hopes of going in competition with Miramax's Che Guevara biopic. A director has yet to be selected." If the movie does go through with Mos Def as the lead, it can mean very big things for our favorite rapper/actor. Stay tuned! "

I don't know just a gut feeling.
Right now, I feel alright about it, but my initial reaction was, "shit".
Probably because they are not going to tell it the way I would like to see it told. Because I am far more into his earlier music, when Peter and Bunny were still in the band, and I would imagine the focus will be on the later part of his life.
I would also far prefer to see the film being made by Jamaicans. Even though I respect Mos's acting ability, I'd prefer to see a Jamaican in the lead (at the least).
Well put yourself in my position. As a huge fan of reggae music, and already sick to death of seeing Bob's face on the cover of every single book, compilation etc. I don't know....I'm rambling aimlessly.
It will be interesting.

Well they just started casting so whos to say how the movie will turn out
and I'm sure it will focus alot on his youth in Trenchtown and when he and bunny hooked up.
And it's good that he is on lots of stuff
you are looking at it strictly from Reggae's point of veiw
He was a great artist regardless of category

I think it would be better if some of the other Reggae artists who affected the music more got the respect they deserved.

Bob Marley= great. Honestly, there arent many artists that I would rather listen to. The man was a genius on the level of Hendrix and the Baha Men.

This from the man who listens to radio disney religiously

Disney have their own radio station? That's terrible shit.
But seriously, 90% of the music I listen to is reggae. Possibly more even. So I don't think Radio Disney would be my kind of station (Unless they've got Augustus Pablo and Johnny Clarke and the Abyssinians and the like on in heavy rotation. Do they?).

they both wont do justice to either men, and mos def is a poor choice for bob marley...
the only movie that i've seen that was good about a character was malcolm x, denzel washington was great...
if they do make it, i hope that it isnt whitewashed for the sake of a larger audience... marley had some very controversial ideas, i wonder if they'll shed light on them in the movie... i doubt it

I'm gonna have to disagree I think he can be like him
"UmI SAYs" proves he can do music that can be related to marley's

you really think UMI SAYS is on or near the same level as bob marley? just because it says on his website doesnt mean he can come close... if it wasnt for BOB MARLEY, most likely mos def wouldnt be rapping, or anyone else for that matter... he was doing things during his time, that only very few rappers could hope to accomplish in thier lifetime... times were different, for bob marleys message to come across during those years was a huge step for concious black music being introduced to the masses outside of the west indies...
in terms of apperance, vocals, accent, they are very different... i know mos def can carry himself in other projects... i even think his son stephen or ziggy marley could do a good job on level with mos def, as i have seen them in many jamaican movies...

i think an independant movie would be a better choice to bring this movie to audiences... these large companies are just tentacles of babylon

I like those proverbs in your sig, Overproof...
I agree with you, it's probably going to be fake. I'd rather see a Jamaican in it speaking real patois. They could stick in subtitles.
It's really starting to piss me off. They're gonna give Bob more credit then he deserves, as they always fucking do.

Well i love Bob, and I love his music. But I think he always gets more credit than he deserves, true he got me into reggae, and his music is great, but it wasn't just him.
Downloading songs and I see shit like "Bob Marley featuring Bunny Wailer", that is like a Black Star song saying "Mos Def featuring Talib Kwali", or a Nirvana song credited to "Kurt Cobain featuring Dave Grohl"!
It is fucking bullshit.
People act like Bob created reggae, but it was Lee Perry who inspired Bob, and influenced him a helluva lot. He gave him the sound he became famous for, and it was while Bob worked with Scratch that he wrote many of the songs which were popular in later years (Natural Mystic, Kaya, 400 Years, Duppy Conqueror, Sun is Shining). It wasn't just Scratch however, it was also Peter Tosh and Bunny, they also are due credit for co-writing the majority of the songs (don't forget Peter wrote and sung lead on Get Up, Stand Up which is one of his most famous songs).
If you ever heard the song "Dreadlocks in Moonlight" (http://www.che-lives.com/cgi/community/topic.pl?forum=16&topic=591) (sung by Lee Perry), you can hear how much Scratch sounds like Bob (Bob like Scratch).
Anyway, that is pretty much a rant, and I don't want to sound like I'm going off on anyone, this just pisses me off.

It's all good.
When I said, I don't care about reggae today, I do really, I wish it was the way it used to be, but I don't listen to any of it.
It's just that this is a strong issue with me. I mean if you were to imagine that they were doing a film on Mos Def life, for example, and Wesley Snipes was playing the lead......ah, I don't know, I can't really paint a good parellel. But I'm sure you can imagine, in some way what I mean....like with a Che film.
