Past: Ferenc Puskas, the magical magyar.

Firstly, in 182 appearences for Real Madrid he banged in a stupifying 157 goals. Secondly he was part of the Hungarian team which humilated England. For anyone unaware of the event, England had been previously unbeaten at wemberly (by any side outside the UK) only to be crushed 6-3 in a display of technically excellent attacking football. The English claimed it to be a fluke, called for a rematch and there were smashed to bits in Budepest by 7 goals to one. Hilarious stuff.

As a footballer he was way ahead of his time but so was the whole Hungarian team.

Present: It pains me to say it but it has to be Christiano Ronaldo.

I never saw Pele play live. I saw Maradona play once, and he didn't preform particularly impressively on the day. Best was the best I have ever seen.

As to whether he was the best, it is a more difficult question.

This year: Steven Gerrard

The best player out there. Messi is damn good, but he wouldn't be the Lionel Messi we know today if it wasn't for Iniesta and Xavi, who really create Barca's fabulous way of playing. Gerrard IS the creator, he is good in defense, definately a player that makes a difference. Plus, seems like a guy who plays football with that kind of affection for the game that no one can resist. Cristiano Ronaldo is also a terrific player. I hate to admit that, but he is. But Messi and Gerrard are better.
Defenders included, i think Sergio Ramos and Vidic had a tremedeous season.

Alfredo di Stefano ( saw some old games, the man was outstanding on the pitch, way above all players of that time)

Ferentz Puskas (also watched more than a few games where this man played, every single one was brilliant)

I don't want to take anything away from Messi, who is clearly suberb, but Ronaldo has been amazing for the last three seasons, probably the best player I've seen at United in the last decade or so. The clash at the Champs League final promises to be interesting (and, no, Ronaldo won't lose his place in the team for that puerile strop he pulled on Sunday; he's simply too good, as even Fergie knows).

Messi. He's a wizard in tight space and makes can make a fool of any several players in the world attempting to close around him. I guess I'm no expert, but from what I can tell, Messi is superior.
