Black Sabbath of course. And Kyuss, I'd probably consider them to have some sludge elements.

High on Fire is awesome! i totally forgot to mention them haha.

Listening to any of these bands really makes being stoned blow youre mind away. well, that is, if youre pretty far gone.
oh so heavy, i love it.

I don't really listen to doom metal, but after looking at the wikipedia article, I do listen to some sludge or similar.

One thing though, Black Sabbath is more rock than metal.

Anyway, I listen to:

Dystopia
Kylesa (apparently a stoner metal crossover)
Cult of Luna (atmospheric sludge/post-metal)

I also listen to some other similar bands, but the most noteworthy for me is Fall Of Efrafa.

Man, I didn't even realise these bands were sludge, or crossover. Cept Dystopia. Otherwise, I called them post-hardcore or similar.

i only have 1 song by cult of luna, "Finland" which is pretty damn good.

Black Sabbath is more rock, but it set the general influence which some bands emulated somewhat. for the early 70's though, im sure they were heavy shit ^_^

And i spent a while on Wiki looking at all the sub genres or Sludge/doom and such, its a freaking spiders web. i think its a good thing though, more variety, and its a bit easier to find things that you like.

Finland is one fuckin' bangin' song. Possibly my favourite.

If you like that kinda stuff, there are heaps of bands like that around, but Cult of Luna is def one of the better ones.

Neurosis and High on Fire are so good.

Early Mastodon could be considered doom/sludge metal as well. I'm not sure about Down, but they're awesome.

I guess you could chuck in Isis amongst that.

Through Silver in Blood - Neurosis Probably one of THE best albums ive heard for this genre. its like an auditory climax sometimes its that good.

Isis is alright imo. i only head the stuff on myspace though.

I was never aware that some classified Sabbath as Doom.

Neurosis. I would say that their newest album is probably the best album I have heard, together with Lateralus and Ænima by Tool (which is prog metal, not doom). I also love all of Neurosis' previous albums, and listen to them constantly except the early punk stuff.

Isis is a great band as well, although it can get a bit monotonous if you listen to it alot. Ambient/sludge, like The Angelic Process and Jesu is good as well.

I also like more post-rocky inspired things like Godspeed You Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky. But that is more like "chillout" listening compared to the likes of Neurosis.

Crippled Lucifer is their only proper album.

It's a bit more extreme than the stuff posted here but still great.

Not sure if this would be considered "sludge," but Giant Squid (http://www.myspace.com/giantsquid) are quite excellent.

I saw this band at Emissions from the Monolith in Austin a couples years back. They were quite good.

Some of my favorite doom bands are YOB, Unsane, Indian (mainly their Unquiet Sky album), Rwake, Hey Colossus, Toner Low, Ufomammut, Earth.

I like some drone such as Lustmord and Nadja. There is a local drone band that I had the pleasure of booking several times called ajilvsga, they are just wonderful.

Elder is pretty good, for people who like Sleep or Electric Wizard.

Other bands I listen to are YOB, Sons of Otis, Grief, Khanate, Buzzoven, Cathedral, Candlemass, and Queen Elephantine.

Edit: Asbestosdeath (which eventually became Sleep), also.

ill have to check out Elder. i just lost most of my music collection because none of it was on my computer except for some recently downloaded stuff :crying:

All i have left is Black Sabbath and Sleep( and a few other bands but different genre). One thing i really like about sleep is that there are 2 songs by them that can last an hour each. the beauty of that is it makes great background music for playing videogames or something. I find the Electric Wizard vocalist a bit more tolerable than the one from Sleep. it might just be that i recently downloaded Sleep and i have been listening to Electric Wizard for roughly 3 years.

I ran into Acid King on youtube which was a nice find. check out Acrimony too

Now, this is definitely MUCH lighter than most of the bands in this thread but they are a nice sabbathesque(if you could call it that) band

Yeah, I love Explosions in the Sky, I saw them that at a little festival called End of the Road early this year and they were brilliant; very energetic.

Also, Coffins from Japan are pretty goddamn ridiculous. By that, I mean that I'm pretty sure they are the heaviest band I've ever heard recorded. They play a mix of Doom/Old school Death metal. I would say that if Obituary was a Doom Metal band, they would sound like Coffins. It's ridiculous.

While probably not as heavy as Coffins, I think Ahab comes pretty damn close.
