I'm going through another one of my phases where I crave a certain type of music... and this time its folk/acoustic orientated music.

The only folk sort of stuff I think I have is Bob Dylan, Frank Turner, Damien Rice and Emmy the Great.

So what else can people recommend me? I'm specifically looking for more political stuff.

I've been meaning to get some Woodie Guthrie, but don't know where to start, so any album recommendations from him would be good.

I don't want any Billy Bragg though

Good call on Emmy The Great, bellyscratch.
Pete Seeger is one of the greatest of all time if you as me, if you're after political folk that's exactly what you'll get, his songs about the Spanish republicans are especially good. Richie Havens is also a great songwriter, if you've seen I'm Not There, the Dylan biopic, you'll know him as the black guy with a beard who sings Tombstone Blues with Marcus Carl Franklin. Dust Bowl Ballads is generally seen as the Woodie Guthrie record, but a good starting point for a Guthrie virgin would probably be This Land Is Your Land, which is the first volume of The Asch Recordings, some of Woodie's best songs on there. One of my favourite artists is Destroyer, although not as political as the others I mentioned, Destroyer is still well worth checking out, very contemporary electric folk, The State is an awesome song.

You into folk punk too?

I'm pretty over alot of it after being in North America so long (ha!), but I still really dig my fav folky stuff, riotfolk. Really political.

And to quote urban dictionary:

kick ass anarchist folk punk collective. theres about 10 members each with their own unique folk style. their website is www.riotfolk.org

Some of these artists have loads of albums, so if you could recommend a specific album for me to get 1st then that would be helpful :)

I was fortunate enough to see him play with his grandson at a benefit concert to give micro loans to Vermont family farmers. His music is amazing and even at 90 years old he is full of revolutionary energy. I hung out with his grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger after, an amazing musician in his own right and very politically active. Both were/are definitely a source of inspiration for me and many others.

You would do fine with any Woody Guthrie or Nick Drake albums,

Nick Drake tends more to poetry than politics though. You might give earlier Roy Harper albums a go for a harder edge and more politics.

The Holy Modal Rounders, The Fugs and Charles Manson.

Charles Manson may have been a batshit insane cultist but as far as folk music goes his music is actually pretty good.
