Lets keep this topic on a more general discussion, like info on leagues that dont have and so much attention like Premier League,Primera etc etc, and for discussion on players opinions some info etc. ;)

Anyone from Scotland?Or someone watching closely the league, especially Hearts?:DI need some "info" on a player, a defender, Karypides Hristos, he is our latest transfer, and i heard he is a great defender, but i cant be sure anymore, i have heard thise lot of times!:(Sooo anyone?

I hear the plan to integrate the old firm into the English premiership has found it's legs again. Might be a good idea financially but both teams would struggle to even qualify for the europa league, let alone the champions league spot they're usually used to. What do people think?

Can't say i've heard of Karypides Hristos but Football manager reckons he's be a good signing for you which is usually a good sign.

Can't say I like the idea much.

I'll update the Dutch football thread later, but for now, I just want to make one big exclamation: FUCK! Ajax just lost 4-0 to measly Sparta, blowing away their chances for the 2nd spot, which allows access to the CL qualification rounds. What the fuck is wrong with them? They looked like they didn't give a shit. It's like the players thought: "Well, the second qualifying round is so damn early, it would mean we'd have less holiday. :(" ****s.

Ajax really annoy me at the moment. Like most non-dutch football fans the world over i have a soft spot for Ajax. Why do they insist on buying such shit players?

It's really frustrating and takes the fun out of being Ajax on football manager. Although i'm trying it at the moment and i'm doing fairly well.

Yeah. Who thought it was a good idea to give full power over transfer decisions to an inexperienced club manager again? AZ just bought some defenders from Heracles and FC fucking Zwolle for a couple million, and became champions two weeks before the end of the season.

Twente got Kenneth Perez (who was humiliated and relegated to the reserves by Van Basten as soon as he became Ajax manager) and Steve McClaren as manager, and they're going to try for CL again (I hope they won't draw Arsenal again...).

This 4-0 is yet another in a series of embarrassing away defeats. 5-2 against Heerenveen in November or so, 4-1 against Vitesse in early 2009 (blowing their title chances), 6-2 against PSV two weeks ago, etc. Nothing against Enoh and Aissati, but when your midfield consists of three midgets (neither of them are taller than 1.70m, or 5ft6, IIRC), you're going to be overrun, no matter how technically good they are.

Ajax have shit policy. That Dutch football is in decline is no excuse. Portuguese football is just as big of a shit sandwich, but Porto are still competing in the CL regularly. In fact, Ajax are the only club with the monetary means that should guarantee a good finish every season.

Samb, i have trashed your post, the rules say it clear, and so i would ask you not to make attacks of this nature to other peoples teams, its their decision, and it can be a delicate matter, so please...

Also, due to the competitive nature of sports, can I ask people to stay civil when discussing subjects such as favourite teams/players or anything of that nature? If I (or any other mod or an admin) see flames directed at someone for supporting a certain team or whatever, that post/thread will be trashed. Please remain civil and friendly.

Hmm, must have mistaken him then.

Now then. Funny news from the Third Division of Belgium, the promotion play-off match between GR Katelijne and Eendracht Zoersel (who doesn't know them?). An Eendracht player was injured, so the goalie threw the ball out so that the player could get treatment. But when the match was returned, the opponent refused to give the ball back, as is the custom, but went on a run and scored the goal. In the end, a fight broke out and 7 police vans were required to break it up...

Video: http://www.zie.nl/videos/Onsportief-doelpunt/m1bzqqff60d3/

It's funny, because something very similar happened to my amateur team two weeks ago or so. We were leading 2-1 against one of the best clubs in the league. It was injury time, which was already running into a ridiculous 98 minutes, and then the same thing happened. The difference here was that one of their players was injured, so our goalie kicked out the ball to give his opponent treatment. So that was even dirtier. But you should never defend naively, and always expect them to fight dirty. Next time our team meets them, and one of theirs gets injured, the solution is simple: don't put it out, keep playing.

Very, very unsporting. But it's not in the rules that you have to give the ball back... Maybe we should have started a fight too.

I was at a cup tie a few years ago (Berwick away at Montrose). Montrose went 1-0 up fairly early and looked relatively good for a side a division below. With half-time near one of the Montrose players went out injured. The Berwick keeper went to the edge of the box and threw the ball out for a throw-in. However, just before the ball went out of play, one of the Montrose players ran up and smacked the ball over the Berwick keeper's head from about 40 yards right into the back of the net and then ran around celebrating. All hell broke loose as the entire Berwick team (including the keeper) started chasing the Montrose players around the pitch, some of them trying to kick and punch them. This went on for a good couple of minutes. For some reason the referee only sent off one of the Berwick players, although the entire side could have walked. According to reports the Berwick players had to be persuaded to return for the second half, which they proceeded to spend trying to deliberately injure as many Montrose players as possible (leading to one more sending off).

I've been to hundreds of matches and never seen anything approaching this in my life! Report is here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scottish_cup/2559405.stm

In fairness to me i was born in Hackney, London but i've spent most of my life in Bedminster, Bristol.

It just annoys me and i don't see how everyone joining in is going to help with the whole religious element of the rivalry.

The reason the irish league is so dead is because the irish tag themselves onto rangers/celtic.

Well that's not the only reason, but it's certainly part of it.

Both Irish leagues do suffer because a large amount of Irish fans are attracted to the teams in England and Scotland. However, it's hard to blame them for doing so given the poor standards of football in Ireland. There's also the fact that Gaelic games are hugely popular in Ireland, which means that local soccer is pushed further down the pecking order.

As long as local football continues to be of such a poor standard, supporters are always going to look across the water for their football. And as long as Irish fans are supporting Scottish/English clubs, local football will never attract the fanbase needed for it to thrive. It's a vicious cycle.

I still go and support my local team (Donegal Celtic) when I can though. ;)

Wolfsberg won it because of Grafite and Dzeko. They banged in a bundesliga record amount of goals. They will lose both of those players, or at least one of them. I can't see them competing next season.

I don't know why Bayern have failed to win it. Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose, Franc Ribery, Phillip Lahm etc are all great players. They were just shockingly inconsistant.

I can't see Bayern holding on to Ribery either so they might struggle in europe next season even more than they did this year. You would have thought that they'd splash some cash in order to regain the title. They've already bought that Ukrainian DM from Zenit whos name i can't remember.

He's never really been accepted 100% by the Celtic fans (not "Celtic-minded" enough). Thee's been a fair amount of pressure on him recently, especially as the Rangers team he just lost the league to was acknowledged as one of the worst in years and a few Celtic fans already had their eyes on nine-in-a-row. Some of his signings recently have failed to impress, especially up front (Samaras anyone?) and I think its this rather than Europe that's cost him. Imo, his European results have been fairly reasonable, especially put in the context of Rangers' dismal exit this year.

what the hell does "not celtic minded" enough mean?

Is he not catholic or something?

Marion
25th May 2009, 18:47
I've always taken it as meaning someone who has an affinity for the club rather than necessarily someone Catholic (although I'm not a Celtic fan and doubtless there are a minority who also connect it to religion). I suppose its similar to Newcastle fans feeling a need for someone to manage the club who has some connection with the club (Keegan, Shearer). Strachan was never particularly liked by Celtic fans as a player due to the fact he played for an Aberdeen team that was regularly challenging the dominance of the Old Firm and having a lot more European success than either of the Old Firm. Plus, Strachan doesn't make much of a secret of having been a Hibs supporter. In other words, Celtic were in the relatively rare position of having as their manager a Scot who never played for the club and never supported them. When you think Scottish football revolves around you (and your Old Firm partner) it can be a bit much to take...

We are after Bruno Aguiar a really tough situation, former Hearts player(where we already got one player, their basic defender) and there is the weird thing that there are interests for this player from Ajax, Celtic and rangers with the last having the biggest chances from the 3, but still reporters in scot and holland send him in cyprus and us!:drool:We can afford paying him, but all that when i heard it from reporters in those countries i was like wtf, compete with Ajax who gets a player and we are ahead?:huh:Local reporters said that we are close but they are idiots no one believes them, but listening from there sounded really weird.Maybe your local reporters are kinda "idiots" who are just after the big news, and send him down here? lol
Ohh btw we closed our last striker for the time, which is non other than Zwravski, the one used to play in Celtic. We seem to love Scot market lately, i want Samaras!!:drool::lol:

So his manager probably made those little "games" that those 2 want him to raise his price as it seems?Hmm interesting..Thought about that too, but reporters made me think that they are actually interest, they even say Benfica is interest, anw i hope we get him and fuck the others want him :p

Yep, I think he is still in Sporting.
But Jovetic is a future star, i absolutely adore his way of playing. He was a captain and twice a league's top scorer when he played for Partizan Belgrade. And, as a reminder, he transfered to Fiorentina a year ago, and he is still only 19. 19!!!

Yeah i read about Jovetic in the "talent scout" section of the World Soccer magazine. It was a couple of months before his move and they seemed to think he was headed somewhere like Manchester United. One for the future no doubt.

Cool. Haven't played Athletic on FM in a while, I should get back to that. Get a good diamond tactic for one of the DMs and Yeste. :)

And, Urzaiz, that reminds me. Ajax got him as a "pinch hitter" (a substitute striker who can break open deadlocked games) last season, but in fact, they didn't even allow him to rot on the bench. It was a ridiculous situation, and everyone felt sorry for him. I mean, you don't expect him to play much, but bringing a player to a club under false pretenses is really disgusting. I hope he's doing ok now.

By the end of the previous season, he had an interview (http://www.depers.nl/sport/194836/Ik-denk-niet-dat-Ajax-fans-zich-mij-later-herinneren.html) (can be translated by Google if you so desire) where even his translator appeared to pity him. The headline read something like "I don't think the Ajax fans will remember me later on." :(

I was shocked when they presented a bid for this guy. He was ok in Heerenveen, but to pay 16m for that?

Yeah. The decision to buy him looked all right, but it was a ridiculous amount of money. This was decreed by Van Basten, who was given all power when he joined, even though he had zero experience as a club manager. And Ajax have been fucking shit up like this for years.

The worst part is, that now every smaller club knows that Ajax are always prepared to break the bank for good sub-top players, because their scouting and legendary youth system have been flushed down the toilet. If Ajax want a major talent now (say, Elia from Twente), the player's club will definitely ask for €10M or so, without having to worry about being bullied by Ajax's attempts to unsettle the player.

No, he is still way too young. He had many injuries this season, so he might prove useful in the future when he is match fit. I doubt it, but still a possibility.

Wanted Man
11th June 2009, 18:23
Well, the Ajax board have declared that they will need to sell some players if there are to be new purchases. But I doubt that Sulejmani is among them. The board has said that they will have to wait to hear Jol's first team plans before they can make a good decision. I think Sulejmani is unsellable at the moment, he probably earns a high wage, too. No way he'll leave just like that. Maybe a loan.

I think Jol will look for a way to fit in Sulejmani, since he's still a great talent. Sulejmani himself will need to get his head down, lose some weight and stay fit for a consistent period, he needs to show if he can play top football for the full 90 minutes, or if he's just too light for the top.

And he needs a manager who is willing to trust him with that left forward position, unlike Van Basten who was tactically inconsistent (switching Sulejmani between attacking midfielder, left forward, centre forward, etc.).

Reuters, Saturday June 20 2009

ROME, June 20 (Reuters) - Livorno returned to Serie A at the first attempt when they beat visitors Brescia 3-0 on Saturday to complete a 5-2 aggregate win in the Serie B playoff final.
Forward Francesco Tavano headed in Alessandro Diamanti's cross from the left five minutes after the break to open the scoring for the Tuscans who finished the regular season third.
Diamanti doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a right-foot volley before Danish midfielder Martin Bergvold wrapped things up by firing under the bar at the end of a counter-attack.
Brescia forward Andrea Caracciolo and Livorno substitute Fabio Galante were sent off in the closing stages.
Livorno, who were relegated from Serie A after finishing the 2007-08 campaign bottom of the table, are promoted with Serie B champions Bari and runners-up Parma. They will take the places of relegated Lecce, Reggina and Torino in the top flight.

Faroes have strong winds through the thole year, and they are the only counrty that it's normal that a player hold a ball with his hand during the free kick, like in american football :), with no problems with the referee. I doubt that will be the case in official euro games, but you see my point.

I live in Leuven, so it's my team, so I should buy a ticket on that side. On the other hand, Standard is just way cooler and the atmosphere on their side is a thousand times better.

the cup it self is a a bit odd. its created so the host nation gets a quick taste of how a World Cup would work. its a test essentially; if they failed on a small level tournament, the cup would have moved or FIFA would put a shit ton of work into it. its set a benchmark for RSA.

the horns are being looked into so that might change.

USA is now a team countries might look into as a worthy opponent, so see you all next year!

Is that because the English weren't anywhere in sight.:p:laugh:

Yeah we had a good go at it but alas our coach is a fucking asshole. He doesn't know how to sub for shit. Our guys were beat at the 60th minute and yet no subs until like 15 minutes after that. Then when he did sub he put on horrible players. The game was tied and he took off a Forward and put in a LB at LM...

I think we made it an exciting tournament. I mean who really wanted to see Spain v Brazil?

I felt bad seeing Deuce balling at the end of the game.

As for the ref conspiracies... It's just how it shakes out for us usually. The refs give the big name teams the benefit of the doubt over us. I mean who gives a fuck if the ref dicks over the US with a red. God forbid though if he should let a foul go uncarded on a Brazilian. However the refs for the cup final were good to us. God how I love the Swedes.

So are you guys going to get your "I Belong to Jesus" shirts now like Robinho? LMAO

I agree, i think he should have brought a defensive midfielder on at around 60 minutes to tighten up the team. You could see when Brazil became rampant that an extra pair of legs all around the pitch could have saved the game.

Maybe it's time to question how shitty the MLS really is.

Plus in the MLS All-Star game we totally controlled Everton all game. Unfortunately at full time it ended up 1-1. A major part of that was Tim Howard because the All-Stars had 21 shots and Everton had 6. Tim Howard beat out Kasey Keller in the penalty shoot-out 4-3.

Anyways I was just trying to get some Europeans angry because I know how they fear us getting good. Once our country gets behind soccer we will dominate the world for a long time. That is why everyone in the world likes to shit on the US league and US national team.

Don't get me wrong, it's not god awful. I just don't think that drawing with AC Milan or whatever means anything. I mean Barnet drew with Arsenal in a pre season friendly; it's completely meaningless.

I know the quality of some of the players who go over to america and they're okay.

The problem with the US league is that to really become big globally, the teams have to be able to compete in the champions league, which is european and obviousl makes this impossible.

When you start playing and beating some of the south american giants, then you can really start showing off.

It's good to know that the league is competative but i'm sure when the MLS has been going on as long as some of the european leagues that a few clubs will begin to dominate. Although the whole club ownership system is beyond me you couldn't explain how it works could you?

That won't happen because of the way the league is set up. There is a salary cap for each teams players. The cap is set at $2.4 million. All players combined salary on a team must fit within that. There is the exception of one person called the Designated Player(DP) and only $400,000 of their salary goes against the cap. This is like Beckham, Juan Pablo Angel, Ljunberg, Guellermo Barros Schelloto.

In MLS the players are paid by the league not the teams except for the DP they are paid by the teams. When the season is about to start up again we have a player draft. I am not exactly sure about the details because it is confusing but I believe you can only make 12 people on your team safe from the draft. The rest of your players can be drafted to other teams. Depending on how you did the season before and other factors you have different times you can use your draft pick. Like if you were horrible last season you would have an early draft pick and could get the cream of the crop if you have the salary space to pay that player.

This is how MLS prevents any teams dominating. It is a very good way to do it imo except the salary cap is too low. Some players are only getting paid $20,000 which is not enough to be safe on over here. They are going to nogotiate the cap again next year so I think they will expand it.

As for beating South American teams, they are in a different region than us so we don't play them. We only play Mexican teams and Costa Rican teams pretty much. The only time we would get to play them is also on the off-season.

I missed most of it, but apparently there was some shocking defending from the Dutch in the second half. It seems that as soon as the opponents bring in a big guy like Carlton Cole, we're screwed. The entire backline is simply too light to compete at this level.

Unfortunately yes. It was hard for me to watch my national team keeper have 6 balls fly by him. :crying:

And Spurs thrashed ull.

It's gonna be a long hard season. :crying:
Then you just got one of my other boys in Jozy Altidore. I hope he can get a lot of playing time because he has potential if he could get some real matches.

Unfortunately as it is he has a pretty heavy touch but I think when he gets in form he should lighten up.

Can't blame Myhill, he had no protection whatsoever. Ok so Spurs are looking good but there is no excuse for that defending! Hope Altidore fulfills that potential but can you send over some defenders?

Hey Chicano, how is Michael Bradley (the US team coach's son, btw) doing? He was a damn good midfielder at Heerenveen, scoring 13 goals in one season, but then he left for Gladbach and I lost track. Heerenveen have a shit midfield now. :D

Edit: funny video:

Commentary: "I was looking at a guy who wanted to do three tricks in a row."
"Everton, the striker?"
"Yes. I think, if you play at Heracles, you should start off with one. And if you go to Feyenoord or Ajax, you can try two, and if you end up at Real Madrid, you can try three. But this isn't smart."

I didn't predict it. I don't think they are that good a team, and believe they overperformed last year and will struggle to get the same sort of results.

I actually think this was one of the very rare cases of liverpool, getting 'caught with their pants down' to use the expression. They will be back this season for sure. I kind of get the impression that because Villa had started so badly, liverpool thought it would be a shoe in.

But dont worry just yet if you are a liverpool fan, I still havn't ruled you out of the title challenge yet. Saying that, the next few games are vital.

Yeah I saw the Hull/Bolton game. I was really stoked when his first touch came and it was an assist. He could have had a goal or two in that game if he wasn't so rusty/nervous but that was to be expected. I heard he scored against Southend. That's cool.

I wish more hull games were televised here. I will have to try to find them online.

It'll be interesting to see what the penalty is reduced to on appeal but there's no denying that the idea of Chelsea having to make do with their current squad for another season and a half is hilarious

Bandito
3rd September 2009, 18:24
I don't find it hillarious.
As much as we all know that bourgeoise scum and mobsters sit in FIFA, this should be a good warning. Younsters are being manipulated and treated as slaves in their teens, and the only ones making money are their managers.
That situation is demoralising and often too hard to take by those kids, and they end up far from their talent belongs.
Plus, I personally have a pick on Abramovich-Mourinho Chelsea and their overpayed squad, so this would make a nice change. It would be interesting to see how will they cope with this situation.

But I still think that the penalty will be reduced after the appeal.

Another round of internationals tonight. I just hope Northern Ireland get beaten by Poland and Ireland beat Cyprus.

I reckon there'll be a bit of madness in Poland tonight as well. A few of the main Polish hooligan groups have said that they will attack and try to stab any NI fans they see. There was widespread rioting in south Belfast when Northern Ireland played Poland in the reverse fixture a few months ago. This time the Poles have home advantage, so I'm predicting more mayhem tonight.

Yea, Ireland are still hurting from that 5-2 thrashing that Cyprus gave us a few years ago in the qualifiers. I think it'll be a really tight game, and Cyprus will fancy their chances because they've come on leaps and bounds in recent years.

If Ireland can win they'll have basically guaranteed a play-off position, so I'll settle for a 1-0 or 2-1 win. :D

There will be quite a few good qualification international games tonight...
England-Croatia being the media darling, and with good reason. So much hype about the game that is seen as a replay of the game where England failed to qualify for European Championship, poisonous darts have been thrown in both directions.
Even though I personally love english football and always support their national team, this would be a game that I strongly support Croatia. I agree with their manager, Slaven Bilic, that english national team lacks "english" style of playing. Bilic, however, has also made a stupid statement, saying that english players in PL intentionally injured Eduardo da Silva.:)
Rooney has found his form, duo Gerrard-Lampard is flawless, but several ireplacable english playes are currently in a shite form(Crouch, Ferdinand, Carrick, Robinson) and that may give fired up Croats a chance. Loss of Eduardo is a huge blow for Croatia, but Mladen Petric can replace him without a doubt. Also, Dario Srna, the best winger i've seen outside great clubs will surely pose problems for Ashley Cole.
The second good game would be Serbia-France. After the draw in Paris against Romania, that freak Domenech's squad is in a "life or death" situation in Belgrade. On the other hand, in Serbia this match is considered "a match of the decade", and there has been a huge pressure on the players in the last couple of weeks, if not a whole month. This serbian team is playing with heart, with little quality, but huge amount of motivation, which is the reason I'm getting more interested in my national team. I'd dare to say that Serbia's defence is better than France's, but i wonder who can pair with Gourcouff, Ribery, Gignac, Benzema, Henry, Toulalan, Diarra and the rest of this all-star team. Serbia's game is based on quick wingers, Jovanovic and Krasic, who make chaces for 2 meters high Nikola Zigic. The whole idea is to hold the ball in midfield, break away through the wings and place a dangerous ball in the penalty area. The man back, orchestating this is not Dejan Stankovic, but Gojko Kacar, Hertha BSC player, who is the best player in serbian team in my opinion. Defensive midfielder who scores goals. A lot of them.
If Domenech loses or draws this game, he will be sacked from the position of manager and succeded by Gerard Houllier, which, I think, should have happened a long time ago.
