Mos Def
Talib Kweli

Dialated Peoples
The coup
and many more are incredible
(all of these artists are underground.concious hip hop none of them are on MTV or BET...well Kweli was on BET but only to promote a new album)

i am very aware of the artists you just mentioned however none hit me as much as dead prez perhaps with the exception of Mos Def. but its the same story with him! he has been quiet for a while. isn't releasing an album with his rock band black jack johnson or something?
Mos Def was on the latest Sound Bombing with his rock band.
He's a busy man, though. He's been doing a lot of acting lately I think.
As for Dead Prez, no clue.
And the fucking coup suck!!! I like their message but I bought Party Music and musically its a piece of shit!!!

Dude. All of them are on mtv 'cept the coup (TEY KICK ASS!!!!!!!)
MTV2 showed one of the Root's concerts
but it's not like they are on TRL
Mos Def was on the Hip Hopera: Carmen
Talib has never been on MTV
Dialated People's video played like twice on MTV2
what I meant was that none of them are part of POp culture like Ja Rule or Ludacirs (who all suck)
They have been on MTV once or twice that doesn't mean they are "ON" MTV
Yeah Mos Def is releasing something with black jack johnson but it wont be out for a while
Right now I'm waiting for the Roots' new album and Kweli's new album
I like teh Coup but compared to The Roots, Mos Def and kweli they aren't shit
and I can't see how Tribe Called Quest can't hit you
they are like the fuckin God's of hip hop

Lardlad:
Cut Chemist weak? wow, i have never heard anybody call him that. the last time i saw them in concert, he and numark had two sets together, and they were great. numark played the drums and cut chemist mixed songs in perfectley with numarks playing of the drums. then he "cut" it up fucking awesome. then he later came on stage with a record player around his neck, scratching on that. that shit made me and my friends bring out hands to our mouths in awe.
ill make sure to post what other crazy shit they do at this concert.
planet asia is amazing too. i havent heard a lot of his stuff in depth, but i have heard some of it casually, and a few things in depth. if he performs like he sounds on record, he should rip the mic!
Talib Kweli has too been on MTV. Not on heavy rotation but he's on there. That song where the hook goes "Kweli" and he's singing in the rain. It's actually more played on BET--that song was on 106 & Park's countdown for awhile, there.
BlackStar was also a BET favorite for awhile. (RapCity).
Talib and Mos Def have been on MTV news, etc. Mos Def was also in that weird movie that was made for MTV with Byonce. Lyricst Lounge was also on MTV for awhile starring Mighty Mos Def.
Anyway, anyone ever heard of Kardinal Offishal?? Now that's the shit!!
j
ps-the reason the coup have never been on mtv or bet is because their music fucking sucks. I think it has little to do with their politics.

cant say that i have heard of the bumrush boys. i may have to check out some of their stuff.
man, i dig jurassic 5's beats. i can chill to those for hours. they just have a different sound. the typical babu beat and j5 beat are on different scales. i can dig both though.
anything with the beat junkies in it is going to be tight. i saw them in concert as well, and that was soe crazy shit. a whole bunch of Djs lined up on stage doing there thing, it was cool.

Yeah , back to Dead Prez, they are supposed to have a new cd by January 19th. The last that I remember it will be called "People's Radio" but I do believe that they changed the title in a recent article I've read. Hopefully the cd will drop on this date, it was orignally supossed to come out last may, but that never happened

Yeah who'da thougfht a bunch of Dj's could actually make a group
I'm still waiting to buy that Dj equipment
don't you already have some
O- I'm with you on the beats. Pete Rock and Premo have it on lock down. No one can see them.
Kardi is nice. The only other Toronto rap I've heard is Choclair. He's cool but not as tight as Kardinal. Man by Choice is amazing but check out the second to last track on firestarter. I forget the name of it but its hot.

my friend had some, but nothing to actually Dj in front of a crowd of people, just something to mess around with ie. just good enough to learn on. he has geminis that are belt driven, and a weak ass mixer. usually you can have it half and half on the headphones, but on this one, it was either one or the other, so you had to blast the music to get the snares right in your mind. if you know that you want to stay with it, buy something that is directley driven (NO BELTS!) and get a mixer that you can do everything you want to do. dont settle because later you will regret it. i dont know much on the Djing level, but i have tried it for many an hour, and thats about it.
"Premier brings the beats..." i dig some gangstarr. does anyone have Guru's Jazzmataz? I have wanted to pick that one up for a long time, but never got around to getting it. i have been curious as to what it sounds like and if its good.

nobody actually has Jazzmataz? the reason i ask is because i went to see the Visionaries a while back, and they were the headliners (if you have never heard of them, they are an underground hip-hop group, not very well known), so that gives you an idea of who else played on that night. anyways, inbetween acts, this DJ came up by the name of ESP, and he played these records that had a fast jazz element with hard breaks, and it was awesome. i have been looking for anything by this person, but have been unsucessful. and i was wondering if gurus jazzmataz was similar to it.

I have to disagree with your definition of good rap groups and artists.
First off the best rapper is definitely Snoop Doggy Dogg, followed by 2pac, Warren G, Dr. Dre, DMX, etc
NWA are pretty good, dogg pound were good. But Snoop and 2pac were the greatest period. Eminem sucks.

Jazzmatazz has like 3 volumes. They are all really good. The first one is definitly more on the jazz tip but the latest one (2000 release i think) is hot too. I don't know about a "fast jazz element" but the beats are hard--the way i like em. It's really a good fusion of jazz and hip hop. It's on a different level than like Us3 or Digable Planets. Guru gets a lot of really cool people on his Jazzmatazz albums--every song is a different artist. I can not believe people here have a shitty album like the coup but not Jazzmatazz--that is sickening.
As for the belt-driven turntables--they fucking suck!!! The whole problem is you can't manipulate the record. Try scratching on it and the needle jumps all over the place. Direct allows you to maninpulate the record i.e. scratch. So if you just wanna play a record then belts are cool but if you want to scratch and manipulate you MUST get direct drive. Whoever said get a technics was right on. Go with the classic 1200s or any edition of the 1200s--they are what work best. If I'm not mistaken there are a bunch of 1200s that have a red light on them at the point of the needle cartridge to help you see where exactly the part of the song you need to pull back or forth on is. Anyway, I'm not much of a DJ but I know people and Technics 1200s are the shit.

Mos Def is CONSTANTLY on MTV and BET. You obviously don't watch a lot of either because Mos Def starred in an MTV original film/"hip hopera" that was very popoular. His latest single for the movie Brown Sugar premiered on Direct Effect last week, his song "Oh No" was extremely popular on MTV as well as BET, and it even reached TRL. "Ms. Fat Booty" as well was also vaguely played on MTV and BET.
Talib Kweli is also on MTV and BET a lot, the song "The Blast" is played on a regular basis, and his latest single "Waitin for the DJ" is played a lot on BET.
The Roots aren't played as much as Mos Def and Kweli, but to say they played in the concert ON MTV for Jay-Z, and they weren't just in the background, they were properly introduced and well known. Their song "Proceed" is probably the most played song as well as many others... there is also a lot of hype about their new album on BET.
A Tribe Called Quest is played a lot on BET, and on one of MTV's offspring channels called MTV Jams, stricly dedicated to hip hop. ATCQ is played on a daily basis on MTV Jams, and Q-Tip got a lot of attention with his solo album.
What do you think makes an artist "underground"? Because they don't appear on MTV or BET makes them concious and underground? I'm not saying the artists you mentioned aren't underground, but your understanding of underground seems to be off. Too many artists think that they are underground because they spearhead commercial rap, that doesn't do it. Not appearing on MTV and BET makes you no concious rapper. Popular artists such as Nelly and Ja Rule hadn't seen MTV for years while their career was starting, and they sure as hell weren't concious. It's another thing if you are not appearing on these channels for a cause, but you should check your facts.

a friend of mine was going to sell me two technics 1200's, a coughin, a mixer, and a tape deck for 700 bucks a while back, but i didnt have the money. its a hell of a deal, needles and all. yea, the scratching on belt driven is difficult. if you have enough weight on the needles, it can be done to a certain extent, but not much.
J - i think the next cd i buy is going to be gurus first jazzmatazz. its been bugging me to get it for the longest, and i think im just going to break down and pick it up. thanx for the info.

what happened to dead prez? lets get free was one of the most aware albums i've ever bought and in my opinion were the (along with public enemy) only good hip-hop artists. if anyone knows where i can get some information from any where it would be much appreciated. thanks
I can't tell you where they are but I can tell you while they are good they aren't the only good hip hop artists
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
The Roots
Tribe Called Quest
Dialated Peoples
The coup
and many more are incredible
(all of these artists are underground.concious hip hop none of them are on MTV or BET...well Kweli was on BET but only to promote a new album)
(Edited by Lardlad95 at 6:55 pm on Oct. 5, 2002)
It's another thing if you are not appearing on these channels for a cause, but you should check your facts.
obviously your extra quick to jump to conclusion postin ass doesn't read all the way through a muthafuckin thread he aint even been in up until now

I mean anything opposed to what popular hip hop has evolved or rather devolved into
anything the majority does'nt listen to but should.
If I asked the 2200 kids in my school who the Roots were I think maybe four could tell me
cuz technically anyone who hasn't been signed is "underground"

lardlad....
hip hop has fell off dramatically since 1989-1996 era....
those days straight classic albums were coming out every week.....
wu tang (plus any of their 1st solo joints), krs 1, nas (illmatic & it was written), the roots (organix, do you want more, illadelph halflife), common, das efx, mobb deep, pete rock & cl smooth, group home, jeru the damaja, gangstarr, public enemy, m.o.p., blackmoon, smif n wesson, fab 5, rakim, tupac, big l, biggie, redman, tupac, def squad, leaders of the new school, arrested development, and so on..... the list is almost endless, plus all the west coast joints were on point too...
nowadays the only new heads i like since then are:
mos def
talib
last emporer
dead prez
ras kass
everything else im not really feeling....

I see what you are sayin It has dropped dramaticaly
However you can't just assume shit aint good you gotta search for it.
Also you didn't Like "Things Fall Apart"?
Personally I thought it was better than Organix,
Water off Phrenology is cool, but it's kinda huanting.
I still think some people put out generally good music. The Roots, Outkast.
I mean Outkast has been consistantly good they haven't sold out
the Nappy Roots are pretty good.
even nas has some okay shit but when he signed with Murda Inc he lost all credibility
don't give up..just search deeper in that Cd store

things fall apart was ill... but i refered to the time period... hip hop was at its best... no materialistic bullshit... either you gutta, gangsta or consious... no median bullshit like now, you was real or you wasnt... thats why im sad that i dont see emcees wearing black panther t-shirts with army fatigues in videos... those were the days... my people were holdin it down, wasnt about the money... people were holdin it down for the love of the artform.... thats all... and dont assume either that i dont look for quality hip hop, brother i know some serious underground stuff most underground heads never heard of.... rasco, ghetto concept, dan eo, marvel, solitair, dl, kathcphraze, monolith, grimace, m-eezee, bonez, black market prophets

actually I've heard monolith and black market phophets
haven't heard that much though.
I see what you are saying it is alot about the money.
but I gotta say something that ?uestlove of the Roots told me (It was on his website)
"I love hip hop with all my heart, but you crazy if you think I'm not doin this to pay the bills"
what he meant was that it should be about the art, but if you make it a career you aren't in it to lose money.
This doesn't justify all the heads out there doin it simply to get paid.
However I think we get to caught up in commercial and underground
I hate most commercial rap...but it's good to keep an open mind
for instance I hate DMX, but his song "Who We BE"
was actually good
Some underground artists suck...some commercial artists are good.
Just as long as you don't throw away your ideals you'll be fine

Maybe I have The Coup as an avatar because I LIKE THEM? The Coup have a great message and can combine it with great music, why do you think The Coup suck?

20th October 2002, 17:46
The Coup suck because musically they suck. I wasted about 15 bucks on party music. It sounds awful. I'm just not feeling the music....lyrically they are good but the tracks are straight shit. Maybe I just prefer harder beats or whatever. It seems like they made that shit on fucking ejay or something.

Maybe lately they have begun to fall off, but have you heard some of their old shit? How can you say they musically suck, when they put out a track like "Me and Jesus The Pimp in a 79 Grenada" this song is a lyrical masterpiece, beats don't make a song, although they do help. Their beats aren't all that bad, although I do agree they need improvement, but come on man... Fat Cats, Bigga Fish is one of the dopest beats I've ever heard, but different people think different things...
