i am a listener of the be-bop era and on. I like the 'cool' too, like miles, and his dee bop (hip hop). I love Charles Mingus, haitian fight song!! Thelonius Monk is great as well. I am not big into swing and big band jazz.

There is something about the darkness in the musicians lifes in the bebop era that also attracts me to it.

My own favorite is Coltrane.

Haitian Fight Song is a genius piece of work, Mingus is definitely up there in the greatest list.

I still perfer Miles' Kind of Blue over his other works, though.

Big band was like the conformists on the scene in the 30's, then when the Bird came, it was a revolution of music, completely changing the norms.

I'm, really not a fan of big band/swingjazz, but I love Miles and Hancock. Decoy, future shock, perfect machine, headhunters, and so on. And oh yeh, Blue Xmas, by Miles Davis.

Big Band V. BeBop? What is this 1961?

They, of course, are two distinct styles of jazz. But neither is superior. A true jazz head appreciates both styles. I'll listen to Ellington's Caravan or E. St. Louis Toodle-Oo as quick as I'll listen to Coltrane's Lush Life as quick as I'll listen to Miles' Kind of Blue as quick as I'll listen to Roy Hargrove.

Jazz is such a complex musical form. I don't see why you need to argue. Billie Holiday to Wes Montgomery to Dizzy Gillespie to Louis Armstrong to even fuckin' King Oliver and shit are fucking incredible.

My advice, don't stick to one style. Listen to it all!!!!

Best new jazz artist?

My vote is Roy Hargrove.

And yours.........

Yes, fucking incredible!!! I listen to it all. And lest not forget Jelly Roll Morton. The Big Band sound is like being transported to World War II though. It just gives off the essence of a completely different era. And Billie Holliday's "Strange Fruit" is very revolutionary!!!

Anyway, did anyone see my post awhile back entitled "One Word - Bird"

There is a book about the song Strange Fruit and Billie Holiday which is a great read.....I highly suggest it.

Strange Fruit was actually a poem first by Lewis Allen.

Billie's interpretation of it is AMAZING, though, truly amazing!!!

Yes, yes, not that I do not appreciate the two (I have about twenty Ellington cds) but I do not see any new versions of jazz that came out since then (excluding fusion).

Coltrane's Acknowledgement was genius, not only the lyrics in form with it but the music correlating to it.

Dave Brubeck is ace.

Im playing "Blue Rondo a la Turk" on my sax in band just now its amzing.

I was well surprised on my flight to South Africa, on one of their radio stations the were playing a Dave Burbeck album, and a Billie Holiday album continuaosly for the 14 hours. I just stuck my headphones on and that was me for the rest of the flight!
