I haven't read any of his work but all the reviews I have read are overwhelmingly positive calling his work "a masterpiece" etc.

I thought he supported the Russian Revolution and joined the Red Army serving for over 3 years? Are all critics of collectivization or Stalin to be considered anti-communists regardless of anything else?

There were many different people who supported revolution,they had different ideas of socialisism and,therefore,different aims.No wonder if some of them became enemies.
