Early Skrewdriver had no racism or any politics at all for that matter just rocking punk songs.

I don't get why there's so much Lady Gaga hate.. she's actually a pretty good artist/performer that writes her own songs. Plus, the piano versions (probably the "original" versions) of her songs really showcase her talent. This is coming from a guy who listens to Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, etc.

I have to agree. Many of my friends are suprised when I speak positively about Lady Gaga, coming from a guy who Tom Waits and Nick Cave make up about 75% of my listening time. I don't know her but her persona seems genuine. Despite what some people may say I don't think she is pretentious at all. She is a legitimately good singer and of course, her songs are incredibly catchy. She is good at what she does, and what she does is good.

Maybe intelligent people should evaluate art on the basis of its aesthetic merits instead of only its momentary popularity.

I liked Pink Floyd even before I found out that Roger Waters was a socialist; that was just icing on the cake, really.

I agree that hero worship is potentially a bad thing, especially if the hero happens to be a pop musician. But a wholesale rejection of their art can hardly be justified on that basis alone.

Also, I agree that some of Floyd's music can be deemed "boring and pretentious" by some. That's okay; After all, music, like all other art, is especially and rightly subject to individual, interpretations and tastes. Art in general is experienced, primarily on the personal level. It's the irrational that first loves art.

Undoubtedly novelty plays an important role in shaping popular tastes. Capitalist propaganda mills know how to exploit it to influence large masses of people, granted, but that still does not account for the durability of some works of art. Pink Floyd, for example, continues to be popular long after the novelty and originality of their music have passed. Likewise the Beatles. Why?

I think it's a mistake for socialists to underestimate popular intelligence and belittle their taste as purely driven by the conformity of the mediocre.

There are plenty of metal bands who have members without long hair or shaved heads...you mentioned Anthrax and Charlie Benante has had short hair since the 90s.

What really makes Metallica a disgrace (to artistry in general, not just metal) is their crass selling of themselves.
