View Full Version : MTV's censorship - of Public Enemy

im not sure on what the song is called, but Public Enemy has a new video, and in the song it says "free mumia," and mtv wants them to resubmit the video without the word "free" because mtv says that it's an "unbiased" station and the word "free" is a personal opinion to mumia, or something to that affect.

i personally think this to be ridiculous.

First off I would like to state that the Party of Socialist Lardlads would like to state our support of the Free Mumia movement

Second fuck M TV all they got is some mediocre hows and pop.

If it wasn't for the fact that I like the Real World 9which sure as hell aint real) I wouldn't even watch that network

Free Mumia

i dont watch MTV either, i just think its a load of shit that they want to censor "free." when i heard this, i couldnt believe it. then i read the statement MTV gave out, and knew it was true. considering all of the other things MTV lets on the air, its unbelievable they want to censor "free."

Actualy I understand that they edited out all mentions of Mumia, as well as his likeness in the video...That's from Chuck D's mouth, when I find the article I'll post a link.

i think that's stupid. mtv aired rage against the machine at the democratic convention with people handing out free mumia fliers but they won't air a video with free mumia. i don't watch mtv but i'm guessing only 12 year old little girls watch, i doubt they will understand the statement. unbiased, that's so fucking stupid. they play eminem don't they? it's a bit elitist to censor some according to popularity. i'd like to see mtv say that they will stop playing eminem, but we know that's not going to happen.

chuck d's response:
http://www.daveyd.com/FullArticles/articleN1250.asp

here's a good one:
"Thus it always seems I exist in a twist of paradox. I refuse to
edit out the MUMIA audio AND visual, that's crazy and they
must be out of their f#cking mind. And since then eMpTy V
has recended a bit by saying that the visual images can stay in
and the names but the word FREE would have to be removed.
It's getting funnier by the week ,that's something to never say
to a black person (maybe why they would never understand
DEAD PREZ's Lets Get Free)"

my favorite:
" They didn't mention the H RAP BROWN part which
befuddles me for he's accused of the same thing. Maybe
they're so unfamiliar and dumb that they donšt know WHO he
is and think I'm talking about some Brown rappin cat or
something. "

eMpTy V that's fucking deadly.
I love twisting languge to get your own meaning.

Like Peter Tosh never (rarely) said "the system", it was always "the shit-stem". Or overstand rather than understand.
Peter Tosh also referred to UB40 as "UB30". I love it.

Damn I wanted the point out the eMpTyV thing. I wonder why they even bothered sending the video to MTV in the first place. Chuck D has always hated them.

i am writing an article about censorship on television and radio for my History class. ive been researching the Public Enemy thing. Personally i think its a load of shit. first of all, MTV is so inconsistent with their censorship. In the Offspring video for "original prankster" there is a scene where two naked schoolgirls are sitting on their principal's lap, and then the camera zooms to a newspaper clipping which reads "Principal Arrested for Molesting Students". MTV okayed the naked schoolgirls, but insisted on censoring the word 'molested' in the article. is it just me or is that completely ridiculous?
but the thing that angers me most is MTV will play rap videos with (more than half)-naked women running around. However, when someone tries to express their political opnion, its not allowed on the air. Music is about expressing your opinion. MTV is such a joke, it contradicts everything music is about. Not only that, it contradicts everything our country is (supposed to be) about. Free speech, free expression, all is suffocated by blurs and bleeps on our beloved Music TeleVision.

*****es.

They don't want to see Black people in videos with anything that has a strong message. That's why the "They Schools" Video by Dead Prez never aired. That's also the reason why they can't deal with Free Mumia.

But Black guys "*****izing" black women is fine, and it's fine when they talk about killing each other, but when they get political it makes the ruling elite scared, cause they know that those words have power.

Hehe...you guys are great. You've said almost everything there is to say before I got a chance to.

For a station that started out so revolutionary and counter-conforming, they sure got commercial when those corporate fucks got their grubby hands on them. Why does everything good somehow turn to shit? Is that the American Way?

"Hi
I'm your video DJ
I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go

My job is to help destroy
What's left of your imagination
By feeding you endless doses
Of sugar-coated mindless garbage

So don't create
Be sedate
Be a vegetable at home
And thwack on that dial
If we have our way even you will believe
This is the future of rock and roll!"

How far will you go
How low will you stoop
To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill

You've turned rock and roll rebellion
Into Pat Boone sedation
Making sure nothing's left to the imagination

M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the air
Get off the air

See the latest rejects from the muppet show
Wag their tits and their dicks
As they lip-synch on screen
There's something I don't like
About a band who always smiles
Another tax write-off
For some schmuck who doesn't care

M.T.V. Get off the air
And so it was
Our beloved corporate gods
Claimed they created rock video
Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial TV has in 25
"It's the new frontier," they say
It's wide open, anything can happen
But you've got a lot of nerve
To call yourself a pioneer
When you're too god-damn conservative
To take real chances.

Tin-eared
Graph-paper brained accountants
Instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now

The lowest common denominator rules
Forget honesty
Forget creativity
The dumbest buy the mostest
That's the name of the game

But sales are slumping
And no one will say why
Could it be they put out one too many lousy records?!?

M.T.V.-Get off the air!
