As far as im aware Caesar wasn't an army and im sure he had quite a few armies being Caesar and all.

Also what are you measuring greatness by?

Something such as the Mongel invasion was certainly larger than some you have mentioned here, is that a measure of greatness?

This really should be in chit chat since it doesn't really hold any historical value and is just opinion.

Do you not just think this is a bit pointless, modern armies are not comparable with ancient ones so deciding on a overall greatest proves nothing. Since historical knowledge of some of the older armies has been massaged gauging their greatness isn't really possible and can you say if their actions were admirable or horrific. I just don't see the point.

I'm going to go with Alexander. The dude conquered from Greece to Egypt to Persia to the far side of India. Pretty impressive.

Though of course that's only for its own time period, the well trained Roman legionaires kicked the phalanxes ass when conquering the middle east from the ptolemys and seluicids and whatnot. And comparing a modern army to anything ancient is a stretch, obviously.
