Sorry Coggs, I don't think Shearer will save you.

Aye, you're up shit creek i'm afraid.
If Hull or Sunderland win a game you'll need to win 3, basically. The Middlesborough game is absolutely crucial now, a real six-pointer.

after last nights game i would say the baggies, boro and the toon. mind you hull are pretty abysmal and might find it hard to win another game. and for scotland much as i would love to see accies go down i think its between falkirk and caley.

In my opinion, if Newcastle manages to beat Boro and Fulham, they have a good chance of winning at Villa Park in the last game of the season.
But i don't think that is possible, considering the current situation.
But hey, West Ham did it last year...

I am all for completely unsustainable optimism when it comes to sports. You can't expect others to follow you in it. Personally, if I had to express a preference, I would rather Middlesbrough stayed up and Newcastle went down if only because a personal friend of mine is a Middlesbrough supporter.
If you are looking for things to be optimistic about I think the possibility of the entire Middlesbrough first team dying of swine 'flu is probably slightly higher than that of Newcastle playing good football. On the evidence of the last time I watched Boro on the TV though, this could possibly improve their performance.

No matter how shit Shearer is (and he's pretty god damn shit), Hull are in free fall and have some difficult games:
Hull
Middlesbrough
Westbrom
Would be my prediction.

28th April 2009, 15:36
Hull have : Vila(A) Stoke(H) Bolton(A) Hull(H)
Newcastle: Liverpool(A) Middlesbrough(H) Fulham(H) Villa(A)
From that point it looks like Newcastle would be favourites but were 3 points behind :(
My predictions
Hull : Villa 2-0(Loss) Stoke 1-1(Draw) Bolton 1-0(Loss) Man utd (can go any way depending on if utd have the title won by then) :(
Newcastle : Liverpool 3-0(Loss) Middlesbrough 1-1(Draw) Fulham 2-0(Win) Villa 2-0 (Loss)
So it will be tied , we will go up on goal difference but I think the game Hull vs Utd will be key ... very key ... :(

I would love to see Geordies sobbing in their beers. It would be fucking hilarous.
I have some admiration for the fans though, as they are pretty good fans.
What the club has done has been a disgrace. The transfer policy has been shockingly bad, they seem to pay far more in wages than a team of their quality should. They have had a revolving door for managers which is never a good sign and financially they have been all over the place.
No matter how much i claim to enjoy seeing Newcaslte sunk, i genuinly think it would be bad for English football. Hopefully when they go down they can get rid of the over paid chaff (owen, duff, butt etc), get in a new chairman, start over again. For the good of the premier league it's important for newcastle to at least be challenging for the europa league.

Ha ha. As a Villa fan, I have got to laugh at the members who have stated that we are going to beat hull and newcastle. The fact that you have predicted win for us at all for the rest of the season is well..amusing. Sadly despite the superb start to the season, all we have proven is that we are the biggest bunch of bottlers in the premiership. As for the rest of the season...thank heavens we had a good start else we would have been down there with the baggies and Boro.
As for me relegation predictions: Ill go with Boro, Baggies and.....Newcastle.

The way the club has been mismanaged we deserve to go down but the fans certainly don't deserve it and neither really do the players. Not really sure why the Newcastle players wouldn't deserve it. Most of them are paid very handsomely (certainly more than the Hull players) and have underperformed the whole season.
Also, not really sure why Newcastle fans deserve to be relegated any more or any less than any other set of fans.

What would you have instead, a system like in American sports where nobody goes down? Three teams go down every year. All of them have fans. If it is not 'unfair' on the fans of Newcastle, it will be 'unfair' on the fans of Hull.

Nah your wrong mate. Everybody in England who doesn't support Leeds hates Leeds.
I don't think that they do today. There was a time when people really did hate Leeds United, but I think that it dropped off a bit when they lost their status as a top club and started yo-yoing between the top two divisions.
There was a bit of a resurgence of it amongst Manchester United fans when Harold Wilkinson's Leeds beat them to the title. Apparently the first words of English that Andrei Kanchelskis learnt were "We all fucking hate Leeds".
I think that dropped away in Manchester, and the home counties, as Leeds success did, and the David O'Leary's team was quite widely admired.

On a more interesting note, if MU win the league before the last day of the season, which given a 3 point and one game advantage looks quite possible. I presume that Alex will send out a complete team of youngsters and reserves for the last league match as it is three days before the Champions League final (that is of course assuming they beat Arsenal, which I think they will after that first leg).
The team they play is Hull, which would certainly have a bearing on the relegation struggle.

More to the point, Shearer has completely failed to give the team any sort of moral boost or kick up the arse. Which is pretty much what he was recruited for. But that is definately not the excuse for such display. It's like they pulled down their panties way before kick off, waiting for 10 goals in their net. They could as well put Nile Ranger or any other youngsters like Haris Vuckic on the pitch "to save players for the Boro game". Miserable.
Joey Barton should be banned from football for life, the man is not stabile. After his transfer, he got in prison(for fighting former team mates), slapped Agbonlahor calling him "fat lip", got injured, and now made a terrible unneeded tackle that cost him a red card. He's simply a dumbass.

Hull have been pretty poor for a long time now. I think the way it is going this year, I would rather have three points in the bag than three games in hand. It is not a relegation battle. None of the contestants are fighting.
It should also be remembered that Hull have a potentially much easier than it looks last game, and that even one point could save them.

We were supposed to have had a bid rejected for him last season. I would love to have seen him here this season, just imagine what could have been if we'd signed him and then Inler. Arsene better make up for it in the summer. On top of a holding midfielder and a centre back I'd love to see an experienced attacking player. We've seen the difference experience can make, just look at Arshavin, his experience lifts the team and getting another experienced player, maybe someone who can play upfront or on the wing would make me really confident. But Arsene says he's only looking for 1 or 2 experienced players and no strikers.
By the way Killfacer, what's your opinion on Ade? I really would be happy to see the back of him. He's lazy and in my opinion has a detrimental effect on our style of play. He hangs on to the ball and is terrbile in link up. It's annoying cos I would have been delighted to get £30 Million off Milan for him but I can't see anyone spending that money on him now.

We should sell Ade to either Manchester City (£30m) or to AC Milan (£22m). He's too lazy, he doesn't even like the team and he brings down the mentality.
I personally think that even if we sell him we don't really need another striker. We have Walcott, Eduardo, RVP, Vela, Bendtner and Arshavin.

It is amazing how much blind optimism one win can bring about. To put it in a bit more context this is the only game that Newcastle have won this year. Talking about the fact that Villa have 'completely lost it in the last 4-5 games' sort of ignores the fact that Newcastle have completely lost it in the last four or five months.
Still congratulations to Newcastle. I think that will possibly be enough. Though Hull United will be a bit of a worry if United win the title before hand.

Villa might not be playing well, but Newcastle are truly abysmal. Hull beating United kids is far from guaranteed. I would assume they are much happier to be facing them than a United needing to win for the title though.

Those "kids" aren't in Manchester United for no reason.
They are motivated as hell and these are the games where they can make themselves seen as potential starters. So, their motive is not in question.
Somebody mentioned Newcastle's defenders. Steven Taylor and Bassong are the only ones worthy of a premiership status. There is no left back(Duff is playing LB, forr crying out loud!). As addition, Bassong was sent off at the Fulham game (even I do support Newcastle, i can be realistic when i say that there was no foul, but that is a different matter).
So, I'm not expecting anything at Villa Park. I expect Man U "babies" to kick the shit out of Hull, but NUFC is not going to get a result. Simple as that. My "blind optimism", as Devrim named it, is gone.

Not too surprisingly, West Brom put up a spirited performance but lose to Liverpool 2-0, and are relegated to the Championship.

I think WBA did a good job. They went down with dignity in tact, unlike Derby who were frankly embarrasing. Perhaps if a couple of results had went their way earlier in the season or if they had a better striker then things would have been different.

Life can be harsh like that.

Oh, I am not saying that it will be easy. I think it will be easier than the first team playing for the title though.
I read Shearer's comments on it this morning:
Shearer insisted after Newcastle's 1-0 defeat to Fulham on Saturday that he believed United would be "fair to the league" and "do football justice" but Ferguson has already decided that his priority is to rest players for the European Cup final against Barcelona in Rome three days later.Newcastle are one point and one place below Hull. Sunderland are in 16th position, two points above Newcastle, but with two games to play, the first of which is at Portsmouth tonight. In a further twist, Sunderland's opponents on Sunday are Chelsea, who could rest the likes of Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Nicolas Anelka ahead of the FA Cup final.
"I'd rather United didn't have the Champions League final three days after playing at Hull," said Shearer. "I'd also rather Chelsea didn't have the FA Cup final six days after playing at Sunderland. But I'm not going to tell Sir Alex what to do – no way could I ever do that. I think when this particular situation has happened in the past he's always been genuine and looked around the league and done what was right for everyone else and for his club."
If I were Ferguson, I would be tempted to turn round and tell him that he wouldn't be seeing anybody over the age of twenty playing at Hull...and they would still put out a better team than Newcastle have done yet under Shearer.
Nah, don't you know that their too big a club to go down?
I remember going to Old Trafford when United were playing in divison two.

Yeah, i think they will struggle. I remember they played Bristol City recently and they weren't much better.
In fairness though, it's not given that Newcastle will go back up. They're going to lose a hell of a lot of players.

From some of the info being mentioned on the radio they will be in huge trouble. Seemingly they have 15 players on 50k a week, are set to lose massively in terms of TV money and will have problems selling corporate packages (Doncaster at home on a Wednesday evening when Champions League is on, anyone?). Whereas at least when Leeds went down they had some young talent they could get some money for (albeit hugely discounted), how much demand is there going to be for Toon's overpaid failures?

You mean overpaid sacks of shit?
I'd rather see a League One Newcastle with players that know where they are, than this type of shameful performance. I'm just sorry that Bassong and Steven Taylor will go with that bunch. They were the only ones who actually played with heart there.

Obafemi martins is a class player. You definatly need to get rid of players like Owen, Barton, Duff, Viduka (he's cursed).
If you can keep hold of Taylor and a couple of your other players then you could bounce back. If not, then i fear it maybe a slightly longer stay in the championship.

Newcastle needs something else. We sold James Milner to bring Xisco and Gonzales, two players that didn't get a single game. Keegan left because of the fact that some billionaire wanted to play a little game.
Alex Fynn said: "FIND A GOOD MANAGER, GIVE HIM A BLANK CHECK AND GO ON HOLIDAY. ASHLEY DID ALL BUT THAT." That pretty much sums it.
But, again, I don't mind relegation, if it cures the problems. But i fear that it will not solve anything. I don't mind seeing the back of Martins, even tho he is my favourite player, along with Taylor. The worst case scenario will be-Shola Ameobi, our next No9...and a captain. Mike Ashley still owns NUFC and plays with it. Nicky Butt, 42 years old as only midfielder. Sound like April fools. And it is very possible.

Keegan left because he's a bottler. Part of the fault is Newcastle's repeated desire for some sort of saviour figure - as a banner at Villa Park said yesterday "Who's your next messiah - Ant or Dec?". Actually, just having heard the local radio journalist eulogising Shearer (who's escaped remarkably free from the fiasco of any criticism) it seems some never learn...

I would add keeping that young guy Edgar, I think he's good on his day.

Edgar is good and he said he wants to stay.
Steven Taylor, Jonas Gutierrez, Damien Duff and Andy Carroll said that there is no other club for them. I recon that there is no club who will make an offer for Viduka or Butt, so i recon that they will also stay. Also, there are some good youngsters besides Edgar. Tamas Kadar, Nile Ranger and Haris Vuckic( Real Madrid wanted to sign him). I think Harper, the goalie will stay as well.
Martins, Owen, Jose Enrique, Geremi, Nolan, Cacapa, Beye, Lovenkrands...are 100% out.
If these preliminary news are correct, it would be a good Championship team, powered by some good youngsters that Shearer(if he stays on board) has in mind.
But I fear Mike Ashley and his "talent"....

I think there are two main difficulties with what you state:
1) Many of the players you identify as being "out" are still under contract and on big wages. How many of them will be quite happy to stay at Newcastle and pick up their pay packets? Or how many might Newcastle have to effectively pay for other clubs to take them off their hands?
2) Ultimately, few of Newcastle's youngsters were good enough to make it into a team pretty much at the foot of the Premiership so I doubt that many at the club have that much faith in their ability at the moment.
Saying that, I don't think the Championship next year is going to be a great division so there's a reasonable chance Newcastle could go straight back up.
