So I have to write a 7 page paper for an ethics course I'm in... It's pretty open ended and doesn't require a lot of research... Mainly I need suggestions on particular subjects to touch on. Comparison/contrasting with other schools of ethics, such as deontology, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, ethical egoism, humanism, etc. would be useful as well. Where do Marxist ethics solve that remained unsolved in other schools of thought? What are some ethical problems/dilemmas that Marxism does not answer?

Thanks!

Note: I have a good understanding of Marxism and what not, but I mainly don't know where to start, and seeing as I've been on RevLeft all day not concentrating on anything, I thought that I could reconcile being on RL and writing my paper by asking you all for suggestions. :)

Well, it's not Marxist, but this might help a little, Anarchist Morality by Kropotkin: http://www.spunk.org/texts/writers/kropotki/sp000066.txt

There is no particular Marxist "ethic". Marxists acknowledge that what we call ethics have been ideas that have constantly developed and changed over time. I would say that is a good place to start. Then you go into critics of each ethical theory. The first place I would look to for some critics would be the philosophy section on this forum. We have a lot of intelligent comrades who have raised up these issues and may spark some ideas for you to make your own criticisms.

Try Trotsky's 'Their morals and ours', which isn't brilliant, but it might give you a few ideas:

You might also find these useful:

But the best book on this is Allen Wood's 'Karl Marx' (especially Part Three):

Two great pieces:

Marx and Aristotle: A Kind of Consequentialism, in Alex Callinicos (ed), Marxist Theory, 1989, pp. 175-210

George Brenkert, Marx's ethic of freedom, 1983

By the way: 'Marx and Aristotle: A Kind of Consequentialism' is by Richard Miller.
