Well, see the hypocrisy of the Republicans.
I do not know one single period during the history of the United States were more people has been watched than the recent period under a republican president. Muslims, peace-activists, leftists, people critical of Bush.

It should be us rising in popularity, not them. :( We're the ones who actually want to achieve something apart from hate. I guess recessions/depressions see the rise of both extremes through since both got support in the 1930's.

Unfortunately, yes. Really the only thing we can do is continue to educate people in our ideas. Eventually some of them may come to our side.

Here in Canada I don't think we even have one center-left mainstream newspaper. THey're all typically controlled by the same company which tends to be center-right.
