One of the things I like about this site is that it sometimes gives me fodder to use in college essay topics*. Especially if the topic is about the Industrial Revolution.

*(I'm a History major.)

Marx's concept (http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1894-c3/ch52.htm) of classes. Oh dear... (Not saying that Marx had no conception of classes, it was just unfortunate he didn't get to focus on it as exclusively a topic as he did other areas).

Just pointing out that Marx never did finish the chapter on classes in Das Kapital. Carry on.

I'm currently doing essays on Russia from 1905-1917 and its mainly questions like 'How did the Tsar stay in power'. Its great fun to answer them, because its basically asking you 'How do the bourgeoisie maintain class rule in periods of intensified class conflict', so I just rattle away essays at the pace of 1 a minute (I'm not lying, they only have to be about a page of A4) and getting A's. Its great :D

I got a 9 and a half out of ten on philosophy class, by suggesting a world wide republic of soviets when talking about ideal state. Ofcourse, I did not use the word soviet, but merely explained the idea.

The funny part was when the other groups ahd almost identical suggestions, and then came my group (me) we made quite the impact with huge loads of theory and practice, and the philosophy behind the idea. All this compared to the masses of suggestions like: "a democracy in a pacific island"... When I asked what sort of democracy the answer was: "there are many kinds?!" and when I asked why island the answer was: "Because there is always a beautiful weather"

Understand my frustration.

Being a communist does help in Sociology (which I'm majoring in). I just did a presentation on the Saur Revolution in Afghanistan, as well as a panel on women in society in which I brought in Alexandra Kollontai's writings on marxian feminism. Fun stuff. And I got A's for it. :D

Yeah, lots of Sociology profs are Marxists/leftists of some nature, but they're also usually statists, so when ol' anarchist me talks about how the state cannot be reformed to solve these problems, everyone gets up'n mah grill
