I would have to say the best is Tupac, a true visionary.
Also:
A Tribe Called Quest
Slum Village
Dr Dre
Snoop Dogg
Nas
Eric B. and Rakim
I am probably missing some, though.

Actually some of Tupacs stuff is ovverated I think.
Personally I think he was a better poet than he was a rapper..thats just me personally
Now I know some of you are gonna be angry and want to kill me but remember killing isn't the way

I agree. I notice that all his best songs are the ones that fake heads hate. The songs he released are all very overrated.

yeah I believe the songs he released were for his commercial image.
Its kinda like Eminem
The songs you don't hear are actually quite good.
But the songs he makes videos and singles for are straight sewage...I mean it reaks of awfulness

I say Tupac is a great rapper because of his potency, not necessarily his rapping ability.
Yeah, I do not understand what Nas is doing at all right now.

it seems that most people have gone towards the studio gangster image! snoop and dre are nothing when compared to the beastie boys, public enemy, mos def and KRS-One. Tupac Shakur could have been a fantastic icon for black america but in my opinion i think he was to caught in the gang violence image when he got together with Suge Knight. People like Nas and Ja Rule are just other commercial versions of Tupac. They aren't and never will be original...

I agree about everything except the Beastie boys
I like them and I respect what they did for Hip Hop
but I'm not sure if their lyrical skills were as good as their accomplishments

BB are the type of hip hop for just chilling at a party or shit like that. They're not a great advancement in the music though.

That's kinda like when Eminem and Pac became big over here, there was a huge increase in the number of people listening to rap and shit but for all the wrong reasons. No one understands real hip hop, they're just into all the gangsta shit and hip POP like Nelly.

Mos Def: "Umi Says" is one of his best songs. "Thieves in the Night" has the best lyrics I've ever heard. "Ms. Fat Booty" is fun.
Common's a pretty damn good artist. :) Thanks for mentioning him, A.

Landland he didn't sign a RECORDING DEAL though i heard he made a song with Ja Rule (lol)... it's silly sayin you won't support Nas cuz you'll have a Murda Inc logo on the album TOGETHER will an Ill Will logo and a Columbia logo... i don't think Nas will change his musical style... i mean, he know he is as commercial as he can get without losing everything...
My two favorite Hiphop Poets: Lauryn Hill & KRS-ONE

I'll admit it, I'm completely oblivious to what is going on in Hip Hop right about now. But Nas was straight Pop after Illmatic (to me, at least). And whoever this Mura Inc. crowd are, they sound pretty shit. LardLad, my Hip Hop tastes are pretty much the same as yours, it would appear. Does that means yours also, BigBlack(like the name, by the by)?

You know, I actually liked Ja Rule when he first came out because he had some nice party songs. For example, he had "Holla Holla" which was always played at clubs and was always requested. Then when he made it big, he began putting out not so good music. And Nas didnt sign with Murder Inc. He's not that stupid. (lol)

I didn´t notice anyone mentioning Saul Williams, he´s got great lyrics and nice rhythms too. Watch the movie Slam! for more about him. http://akas.imdb.com/Title?0139615

I think he did something for cartoon network so he has already lost a couple o' ounces of street cred.

Saul Williams is fucking great! the movie slam is also pretty good. do you know where i can get a copy of pure slam poetry? i saw one in my english class last year, and havent been able to find a copy of anything close to it since.
he and a few other slam poets were in south africa (im not sure i have the location right) a while back doing poetry for some of the elementary students, trying to get them into poetry.
EDIT: i just found the video i want, so nevermind the question i had up there.
