After seeing the Saint Patrick's Day thread I thought we'd have to play it fair, if for any reason, to show up how silly any form of nationalism is

*tries to remember how this goes*

Okay. We start with the flag!
http://www.picturesofengland.com/images/england_flags/england-flag-05.gif
Tada!

Okay. Hmm. What's next. I suppose I've got to drink something really English. The Irish drink Guiness, so I guess I drink... um TETLEY! YAY! CARLING BLACKLABEL!!! Hmmm, maybe not as tasty as a Guiness, but you can drink more than one without exploding.

*checks her checklist*

Oh right. I almost forgot the, YAY! England rocks for no particular reason! etc, etc. I think I'm supposed to start singing Jerusalem, or Three Lions about now, but I'm not sure.

Did I miss anything? I mean, other than declaring war on France, or failing that Zanzibar? Oh wait, cant declare war on Zanzibar again. Damn.

Hmmm. Wonder when St David's Day and St Andrews Day is.

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with celebrating englishness. But it should not be based on xenophobic or supremacist attitudes. The irish manage to do this fine- they celebrate their saint but they allow everybody else to celebrate him too.

What the hell has St George got to do with England anyway? or lions? or Jerusalem?

I mean he never came to this part of the world, lions dont live around here unless theyre in a zoo and well Jerusalem is in different country. Doesn't make much sense really

It's a little too Christian for my liking, the flag looks like it came off a Crusader's shield.

lol. IT DID!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_George%27s_Cross#St_George.27s_Cross_in_England
"It was adopted for the uniform of English soldiers during the Crusades (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusades) of the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries, particularly by the Knights Templar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_Templar). From about 1277 it officially became the national flag of England and Wales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_England)."

Why do we celebrate St George for slaying a dragon and not, say, Beowulf or Lara Croft. I declare the 24th of April Lara Croft day!

St. George is the dude who said he saw the loch ness monster right?

Actually, I think his father was a Roman though his Mother was from Palestine. He was born in İznik in modern day Turkey.

I think that the OP's point was to compare it to St. Patrick's day, which it seems to be perfectly acceptable for most leftists to celebrate;

Isn't he also the patron saint of Russia, Palestine, Georgia and Ethiopia? Doesn't seem to be patriotic enough for me if he's whoring himself off to these other countries

I believe St George is the patron of the city of Moscow. St Andrew is the patron of Russia as a whole.

So whenever a team from Moscow plays in Europe, the rest of Russia want them to lose?
