Best bands I saw were:
The Hives
The Datsuns
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Amen
The Prodigy
The Icarus Line
Finch
...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
I heard Pulp - Common People while queuing at the cash machine and thought of Zippy. Were they as good as you hoped then my son??

Better. :)
My favourite band of the festival for the 2nd time, and thats got to take some beating.
The Prodigy were amazing aswell, if only for the hype going around more than the set. Stood waiting for them to come on was the best feeling i have ever had in years. There set did get a bit boring for me though, if only for the pill heads who wanted to "dance" in a crowd and insisted on elbowing me 64,000 times.

I have to admit, I almost fell asleep during Mindfields cos Amen and Dillinger had knackered me. Still, I loved Firestarter and Breathe. I thought their set was quite short actually. They were the only headlining band I checked out all weekend. In general at festivals, the headliners suck.
And pillheads annoy the fuck outta me too. Some girl insisted on tripping in my campsite. She stared at me for like two hours gnashing her teeth. Hardly fun of the fuckin century is it??
Who else did you see?? I seriously rate The Datsuns, who were on the Carling Stage on Friday. They kicked the shit outta the corporate garage rock being regurgitated over on Main Stage that day (*AHEM* The White Stripes, *AHEM The Strokes). Also Dillinger were amazing. It's so grate to see a band truly not give a fuck what their crowd thinks of em, and be prepared to push the boundaries and challenge the conservatives down there to see Slipknot and Slipknot only. Their music is intense too, it really smashed everything else to pieces.

While i agree with you that some of the smaller bands really can be amazing, i'd hardly call The White Stripes and The Strokes "corporate". They just happen to sell more records, it doesn't make them any different to the smaller bands. They aren't exactly Guns 'n' Roses are they?
I saw Hoggboy on the Radio1 tent and they were amazing aswell. They know how to treat an audience well. :)

The Strokes only got famous cos they had loadsa contacts in the New York music industry and they are riding the crest of a wave of being retro and from New York. It's fickle fashion, pop culture and attitudes infiltrating the alternative. As for The White Stripes, they're probably as shocked as i am that they're famous. Maybe if they didn't wear matching clothes and be incestuous they wouldn't have got so far. ;)

I'm aware your not a fan but thats insane. Pop culture has always been about fashion, and just because The Strokes don't make hardcore-underground-metal doesn't mean that anyone who likes them is fickle. The just happen to be MTV friendly, like many other bands on this planet.

Hey, I am gonna have to stick up for the White Stripes, I have liked them for quite awhile. I like all their albums, and think they put on a hell of a live show. One of the best live sets I have seen in years.
As for the incestuous thing......that is a hoax. They actually used to be married and are now divorced. They just say they are siblings to fuck with people. (which I think is pretty funny) They are shocked they are as big as they are. Hell a year ago they were playing a hole in the wall punk club here in town, and now they nearly sell out one of our bigger venues. crazy.
As for the Strokes, I have liked em since I heard em.....and yeah its all about who ya know.....but their live show is TERRIBLE.
What I think is funny are the sheep teenagers who now I see dressing like them, and think its "cool and alternative." Those are the people who are laughable if anything.

Lol...don't be stereotyping me now Zippy :). Notice how I put The Hives as the best band of the festival. The problem is, The Strokes and their fans are bandwagon jumpers. They're just lucky and riding high partly cos of Julian Casablanca's (terrible) looks, and partly cos of the way they dress. If you take that away and listen to their music, it's actually very two-dimensional.
The just happen to be MTV friendly, like many other bands on this planet.
Who, coincidentally, I also don't like that much. however, I don't dislike The Strokes cos they're famous, but if they weren't famous I wouldn't dislike them so much simply cos I wouldn't be seeing so much of them. Now I am sick to the fucking back teeth of their retro videos clogging up the alternative playlists and stopping quality getting through.

"...they put on a hell of a live show. One of the best live sets I have seen in years."
Well I saw a bit of them on Friday and I thought they were terribly boring. The songs are slow and monotonous and they don't really do much in terms of showmanship.
"As for the incestuous thing......that is a hoax. They actually used to be married and are now divorced. They just say they are siblings to fuck with people. (which I think is pretty funny)"
Ok...I'm confused now. How the fuck could you be in a band with just your divorcee?? I couldn't cope with that. Respect to them for doing that then. :)

I ain't seen any of them round here. The Strokes and The White Stripes are listened to by trendy media types/yuppies/fashion designers who live in Kensington and say "daaaaarling" and "OH MY GOOOOOOOOD!!!". To be honest, the majority of real music fans (ie people who know about music and don't just listen to it) I know dislike them. Zippy's an exception in this respect (PS - I don't wanna sound snobby, that's just the facts).

Well I saw the White Stripes in Detroit, which is their hometown and the show they put on was amazing.....Jack White didnt stand still for 10 seconds through the whole set. It made me tired just watching him.
Yeah they are divorced. My ex husband and I get along really well. I could see being in a band with him, we get along well enough....but he plays in a grind core punk band (not my thing....haha)
And people I know who ARE real music fans and musicians themselves love the White Stripes. But on the other hand I know other people who dont care for them all too much.
Arguing over music is silly....we all like what we like. My taste ranges from Johnny Cash to the Flaming Lips to Jonah to Woody Guthrie to Blatz to Keith Morris era Black Flag......
just because I dont listen to all "underground" bands I dont think makes me any less a real music fan.

That is the one point i will agree with you on. When a band is media friendly they attract the people who only listen to what NME tells them to listen to. My friend is a Strokes fan, but he doesn't understand the background of the music. He just thinks they sound cool and MTV play their videos so he is happy.
I hate part-time music fans. *grrrrr*
Plus, The Strokes don't rule my life, i just respect them. I know they're retro, but at least i'm a fan of the bands they are copying. ;)

Wow...I must have been seeing a different band then cos Jack White was motionless for the entire half hour I was bored enough to watch them.

Never say that. Arguing over music is what I do. :)
