As you can find out from my profile, I am a Romanian citizen.
The People
The situation in my country regarding civic consciousness (not to mention the local perception of socialism) is dire. As a matter of fact, most people here are fed up of all the crap the government has pulled since the '89 Revolution, and being fed up, they have fallen in the pit of ignorance, refusing to touch anything politically related.
Mass consciousness has been murdered and all that prevails is America's pseudo-cultural, consumerist influence. Also, communism here is either wrongly linked directly to Ceausescu's dictatorship or dismissed as idealist, impossible-to-achieve crap.
The Enemy
This being the situation, the rate at which extreme right-wing nationalism gains in popularity amongst the Romanian youth is extremely alarming to me. The so-called "Noua Dreapta" (the "New Right") organization seems to be the main enemy if any left-wing action were to be taken in my country. Their main targets of this movement seem to be the Hungarian ethnics of Transylvania and the Gay community.
They seem to have the upper hand in protests, websites, media (papers, leaflets, etc.) and music because they are alone on the field with absolutely no other organization to challenge them.
What is to be done ?
Now comes my question. What can I do to stop these "Hitler fanboys" ?
I have no experience in such situations, but I am willing to learn. I would have joined a organization or at least tried to make a group of friends if I would have met anyone with left leaning political views.
I might try to start a organization by myself, but without a minimum of guidance or support, I don't think I'd be able to carry such a task.
Maybe I can concentrate my efforts on a politically "neutral" position, by attacking government policies in regards to workers rights, defend the workers in cases of factory closure and all sorts of socially oriented tasks, etc.
Or maybe I can help in setting up a "forward post" for any foreign organization that might be interested in extending its operations in Romania, I don't know.
All in all, whatever shall happen, I'm worried sick and angry of the situation in Romania, on all aspects, but more than all, I am angry that the proletariat of Romania, as I see it from my subjective view, is deeply sleeping in ignorance, with our class rivals marching triumphantly over our heads!
I might be following in Winston Smith's footsteps (in a more romantic vision), but I am willing to risk, as little a impact as my actions might have!
If anyone has any advice for me, or wishes to discuss the socio-political situation in Romania, feel free to do so. I am more than happy to contribute with all of my humble knowledge!
