hawarameen: nice topic, but i think this has been covered already.
Im with larlad on this one all the way. im assuming you (hawarameen) have never been to a hip hop show in your life, so you have no room to talk whatsoever. go to a hip-hop show, and you will see people there that do not "wear jeans made for two and refuse to wear a belt with half his arse hanging out, walking with a permenent limp." when you say something like that, you might as well start a topic entitled "im ignorant about hip-hop."
thats enough for now.

in essence I don't hate any person, i hate their beliefs.
And I'm sure if it weren't for the fact that I'm black i could find someone in the group I would get along with.
Of course thats not possible since they would lynch me.
However there is a difference between Hip Hop and the KKK cuz Hip Hop doesn't have one goal, there are many styles.
The KKK all agree on one thing, that they are better than other races.
Also I don't like alot of rock but I found some good in it.
you can find good in any music, keep your mind open

no you didn't but you're on your way to doing so. I can already tell that that is the way you feel about our music. And that is perfectly fine with the exception of the "faggot, homo, flamer, cock, dick, suckin, rider, man- juice inhaler." That is complete bullshit. Not many rock listeners are close to being gay but actually closer to being homophobes. If you hate a kind of music, good for you for saying so. Let the other people deal with it.
But in on the other hand you are right. People cannot assume stereotypes like I, often times do. And by saying you hate something, you could really be hurting someone's feelings so I try NOT to say that rap is garbage. Lardlad, not everyone is as considerate as you.
Imagine this scenario for a moment.
You are surrounded in a school of white people (not one black) this is not a problem to you though because they all are 100% convinced that they are indeed, black. they wear pants big enough to fit a small country inside of them. They sag their pants so low that you can swear you can see the bottom of their asscracks. These "whiggers" often great you by reffering to you as letters of the alphabet like "yo g" "yo B." sometimes they even call you a dog or perhaps ask you for the courtesy of a "g-ride." They all ride their fords so low that sparks fly from the ground as they drive away blasting their eminem over the radio. After seeing this for years, you have discovered that everyone sort of looks alike now. What little individuality that has existed in previous times, has disintegrated in to nothing. Everyone looks like everyone else. Everyone strives to become the same individual.
You lose your ability to think. these bumbling idiots have clouded your judgement. You see only one thing driving thismadness. the one thing you see driving this disgusting style is the music genre known as "rap"
after seeing these new white/black breed, you can no longer differentiate between good rap and bad rap. It all becomes the same to you, just as all of the people have become the same.
All I am trying to say is that people like myself who are ignorant have clouded judgement.
I do not mean to offend any of us who dislike rap, I am only saying that we have been to exposed to this blandness to understand that there is rap with meaning and not just about g-rides and thongs. I am trying to tell you that you must have sympathy on us. We do not know any better. We do not really hate rap but only what a small portion of it has done to individuality. And we do not blame it on all rap but only what you hear on the radio. Forgive us. We are only human.
And no, I do not "hate" rap. You have helped me correct that mistake. I simply do not care for it.

first of all it aint your music like I said before in the other post and if anyone wants evidence go back to that other thread.
I don't hate rock I was just saying that it wouldn't be right for me to say stuff about your music's culture.
Also all those "wiggers" don't represent hip hop culture.
ANNOUNCEMENT: What you see in your schools more than likely does not represent the hip hop culture. those people are posers and the few that actualy know what true hip hop is are often over looked.
what you guys see is MTV's version of the hip hop culture, a watered down commervial version.
You didn't see what it truly is and it sickens me that that is your first impression of hip hop
because you didn't get the real version

that may very well be but you are closed minded about music.
You can't accept the fact that you havne't heard everything hip hop has to offer yet you automaticaly shut it off.
Keep your mind open, don't refuse to like something because it is of a certain genre.

I guess this is the point. While I don't agree with using homophobic references to rock music lovers, I agree with lardlad here. I can not say that I hate any genre of music. Of course there are some rock bands I hate, some jazz bands I hate, some hip-hop bands I hate, etc.
As for the MIRS's scenario--that could be said of any clique in high school. Because you do not care for members of this group does not mean that the music they like is bad. When I was in high school I hated the rednecks who listened to country. I convinced myself that country was aweful, racist, etc. But then I actually listened to it--and it wasn't all that bad. I mean, look at any of the groups in high school--the ones that wear black (so that makes the cure awful); the preps (so that makes rock awful); the nerds (that makes classical awful), etc, etc, etc
Hip hop or any music style is in and of itself a musical genre. It has its good points and bad. But please don't claim that all of one type of music is bad--especially if you are just associating a crowd you don't like with that music.

Why care? Its only music. If someone wanted to write pages and pages about how much they hated my music then i'd laugh. What a waste of effort it is to hate something that can't be changed.
While i hate Dr Dre for being a money hungry media puppet who doesn't know what music is, Jurrasic 5 blow my mind. Some of its amazing, some of its awful, some hip-hop is okay and some doesn't even warrant an emotion. Its only music. :)

i do know the difference between rap and hip hop and i know i hate them both.
This topic is not so much a can of worms as a whole barrell and i only started in the hope to find out that this site wasnt just a hip hop appreciation society.
I have listened to alot of hip hop and rap and obviously no-one knows everything about a particular subject but we all form oppinions from what we know and from what i know it is my EDUCATED oppinion that both forms of music are rubbish.
If there is a good hip hop "song" i havnt heard it and i believe i am unlikely to.
My original post was meant as a commical description and not meant to offend, if someone made fun out of the music i listen to so be it. in fact i have posted a previous comment about how The streets (original pirate material) was not bad and i got nothing but ridicule, SO WHAT CHILL OUT.
Anyway, please accept my appologies if i have offended (although i do not see why i have to)
I disagree that Dr. Dre doesn't know what music is. I like Dre even though his style of music is not what I'm really into.
This is like the 100th discussion on why people hate rap music. I think we can all agree that to say you hate rap music because you think all people who listen to it are clones you are being ignorant and stupid.
We are talking about stereotypes here people. I mean, I could say I hate punk rock because all the those people have too many piercings and varieties of hair color. What, do you have to look like a freak to like punk? This is an obvious stereotype. But it is the same thing as saying you hate rap music cause all the people that listen to it have their pants all off half their ass.

wow, i havent come on since i posted yesterday, and look at this, 4 pages....
hawarameen: what concert did you escort your little sister to? i have been to a few hip-hop shows in my time, and also one rap show. between the two, there is a huge difference. at ALL of the hip hop shows, i felt welcome and saw a hure variety of people there. at the one rap show i have been to, i saw many a gangster, one guy get his nose brocken and limped out with the help of his friends, and a few people that were very nice to me. my point being that you can not stereotype a WHOLE genre by a few bad times you had with it. yes, at all of the hip-hop/rap shows i have been to some people had pant lines below the ass, but many also did not, me being one of them.
"when i described hip hop lovers it was a generalisation based on what i have seen, a hall full of hip hop lovers dressed the same way, it was like they wouldnt let you in if jour arsehole wasnt showing."
i went to a Union 13 show the other night, and almost every person there had on their patches of bands and converse and were dacing in a circle in the middle of the crowd while pushing me a few times. and then you have me, who does not come to the show like the majority. but, i did NOT feel like they all looked at me and immediatley saw me as an outcast.

everybody generalises and to those who keep insinuating that i dont know anything about this particular topic obviously have difficulties reading.
I have heard enough of it to know i dont like it with a passion. I dont know the exact name of the band i had to endure but there was no violence just allot of band members talking over each other with lyrics which basically consisting of What, Yeah and Ahuh.
The people were nice im not saying they looked like bad people and i have never said that its just that in the same way that the VAST majority of Marylin Manson fans i presume are goths, the majority of hip hop fans (i believe) conform to this particular style of clothing.
Im sure most hip hop fans are really nice people when you get to know them.

i do know the difference between rap and hip hop and i know i hate them both.
Anyway, please accept my appologies if i have offended (although i do not see why i have to)

you obviously haven't heard enough if you aren't willing to admit that you don't know everything there is to know about it and you wont keep you mind open enough to accept that maybe a hip hop song will come along that you like.

I'm going to try to break this down for those that were wondering the difference between hip hop and rap music...
RAP - this is the music that is played by mass media, such as MTV, BET and most top 40 radio stations, as well as commerical urban stations.... the content is lyrically weak, based upon machesmo, women, guns, money, drugs, violence, and materialistic objects... examples of these rappers are Jay-z, Nelly, Ja Rule, Mobb Deep and Method Man.....
Hip Hop- the anthem of concious black urban youth (also big with white youth).... this music is lyrically driven, speaking on society, politics, themselves and generally with what is wrong with the world today.... Artists such as Talib Kweli, Mos Def, DEAD PREZ, Jeru the Damaja, KRS ONE, Non Phixion, and common bring knowledge to the otherwise clouded hip hop generation.... even if you don't like hip hop i suggest listen to such songs as BLACKSTAR - THIEVES IN THE NIGHT.... DEAD PREZ - PROPAGANDA... DEAD PREZ - ANIMAL IN MAN (A FLIP ON ORWELL'S ANIMAL FARM)... SCIENTIFICAL MADNESS - JERU THE DAMAJA.... THE CIA IS TRYIN TO KILL ME - NON PHIXION....
I understand everyone has thier own tastes, whether it be reggae, punk, metal, hip hop, country, pop, whatever... as long as you keep open minded there is no problem... hip hop started as a concious ghetto movement, bringing issues to light in the form of music, and now it is being played against itself by the industry with their machevellian tactics, killing off artists with a divide and conquer idealogy...
thank you for reading this post, i hope i have cleared some things up....

U should definetly listen to "conscious" hip-hop if the bling blingin stuff is not talented enough for ya. And I agree that a lot of it is totally untalented with a bunch of nursery rhymes. But you also have a lot of thrash metal bands that play a three power chordsfor the whole song and play the root notes of every chord on the bass. Is that any more or less talented then coming up with rhymes and being able to flow? I can respect that u dont like it, cuz some metal sounds like a bunch of guys screaming to me, but to say it takes no talent is nonsense or everybody who liked it would be doing and not listening.

Lardlad,
Your oppinion of hip hop is based on what you have heard and based on that you make the decision that you like it.
Can you tell me if you have heard EVERY hip hop song out there?...... I guess not.
You have come to your opinion based on what you know, you are no different to me in this case.
like you i have come to an opinion based on what i know, it just so happens that we have different opinions.
I am not wrong in saying that just because i say that from what i know i hate hip hop.
If you heard every hip hop song out there you might find that you only like a small fraction of it and you overall opinion of hip hop may change.
I like rock, reggae, indie, some dance, blues and punk.
I dont claim to be an expert in every field i am merely basing my opinions from what i know.

First bling bling means jewelry, gold, platinum, diamonds, stuff like that.
Secondly, what I think he was trying to say was have u had a big enough sample to disregard the entire genre, although he coulda worded it much better.
And u are entitled to your opinion of hating all hip-hop, i for one dislike most punk music that i hear. I think its a bunch of guys playing power chords and root notes and screaming (not singing) into a microphone. And no amount of persuading is gonna make me change that, similar to you. But I also know that I like a couple songs. So no style of music is totally garbage, but nothings wrong with your preferences, I think the rest are great. By the way, I joined right in the middle of this whole conversation thing, what irks u so much about it?

inferior? you really need to hear the roots they have some good musicians.
"What They Do" has some real good jazz in the back round.
I mean I agree with my brother, alot of rock bands don't mix it up.
So how can hip hop be musically inferior?
By the way who does your sister listen to?
Cuz I bet its that commercial shit.
You really need to TRY and broaden your horizons
you just haven't heard any good types of hip hop. Don't assume that everything you hear on the radio is all that hip hop is.
Just like I'm sure blink 182 isn't all there is to punk.
In fact alot of people consider them pop punk.
Just like I consider Nelly pop rap.

[Mos Def]
Yo, I'm sure that everbody out listenin agree
That everything you see ain't really how it be
A lot of jokers out runnin in place, chasin the style
Be a lot goin on beneath the empty smile
Most cats in my area be lovin the hysteria
Synthesized surface conceals the interior
America, land of opportunity, mirages and camoflauges
More than usually -- speakin loudly, sayin nothin
You confusin me, you losin me
Your game is twisted, want me enlisted -- in your usary
Foolishly, most men join the ranks cluelessly
Buffoonishly accept the deception, believe the perception
Reflection rarely seen across the surface of the lookin glass
Walkin the street, wonderin who they be lookin past
Lookin gassed with them imported designer shades on
Stars shine bright, but the light -- rarely stays on
Same song, just remixed, different arrangement
Put you on a yacht but they won't call it a slaveship
Strangeness, you don't control this, you barely hold this
Screamin brand new, when they just sanitized the old shit
Suppose it's, just another clever Jedi mind trick
That they been runnin across stars through all the time with
I find it's distressin, there's never no in-between
We either niggaz or Kings
We either *****es or Queens
The deadly ritual seems immersed, in the perverse
Full of short attention spans, short tempers, and short skirts
Long barrel automatics released in short bursts
The length of black life is treated with short worth
Get yours first, them other niggaz secondary
That type of illin that be fillin up the cemetary
This life is temporary but the soul is eternal
Separate the real from the lie, let me learn you
Not strong, only aggressive, cause the power ain't directed
That's why, we are subjected to the will of the oppressive
Not free, we only licensed
Not live, we just excitin
Cause the captors.. own the masters.. to what we writin
Not compassionate, only polite, we well trained
Our sincerity's rehearsed in stage, it's just a game
Not good, but well behaved cause the ca-me-ra survey
most of the things that we think, do, or say
We chasin after death just to call ourselves brave
But everyday, next man meet with the grave
I give a damn if any fan recall my legacy
I'm tryin to live life in the sight of God's memory
Like that y'all
if you don't understand any parts of this song just lemme know and i'll explain it to you, because if you understand the slang it makes perfect sense.....

(M-1)
The white man came to Africa with rifles and Bibles
Heard the name, started changin the titles
Now instead of Chaka call me Nat Turner with the burner
Freedom fighter for this revolution, fuck a wave journer
See I be what John Wilkes Booth was to Lincoln, blam!
Sirhan Sirhan, peepin through the curtains with my eyes on a Kennedy
Dead prez, politic, know your enemy, keep your toast close
Because political power come from the barrel of it
We in a war, nigga leave it or love it
Since they got us in a scope like a P.E. logo
I watch for the po-po (woop woop) and train at the dojo
Not a gun Deniro but a working class hero
Takin a stand, like a panther with an M-1 Guran
Screamin know your gun laws, self defense is a must
When we set it off I'm a be the first to bust
(Talib Kweli)
What do you do
when the police kick in your door like 'get on the floor'
Shoot you in the back
cause who you are and where you at's against the law
You try to protect your home with the illest arsenal possible
Learn how to heal yourself and stop fuckin with them hospitals
Get with brothas down for the cause givin it all they got
But every brother ain't a brother (word), fuck around and get shot
By these black kings that pack gatlings
to make a rat sing like Nat King
Before they start blasting (blow!)
With no accuracy, handling they beef in the public
Now an innocent child got a bag for a stomach
Property value plumit every time a shot is fired (c'mon)
People feelin betrayed so they take the street to riot
Cops fire shots and try to stop the spirit takin over the entire block
Politicians say it's time to march
But people is past that, ready to blast at whatever comin
From the master or from the office, niggas is sick of runnin
Yeah, all my soldier, raise it up, c'mon, now
(Bust ya guns) yeah, Kweli with dead prez, c'mon
(Blow blow)
(DEAD PREZ, PROPAGANDA)
Verse 1:
You can't fool all the people all of the time
But if you fool the right ones, then the rest will fall behind
Tell me who's got control of your mind? your world view?
Is it the news or the movie you're taking your girl to? (uh)
Know what i'm sayin cause Uncle Sam got a plan
If you examine what they tellin us then you will understand
What they plantin in the seeds of the next generation
Feeding our children miseducation
No one knows if there's UFO's or any life on mars
Or what they do when they up in the stars
Because i don't believe a word of what the president said
He filling our head with lies got us hypnotised
When he be speaking in cold words about crime and poverty
Drugs, welfare, prisons, guns and robbery
It really means us, there's no excuse for the slander
But what's good for the goose, is still good for the gander
See...

Well, I can respect that while disagreeing. Lyrically, i think hip-hop is second to none. Mostly because of the metaphors that hip-hop has while it is at its best. And there are certain words.. like long words that u wouldnt hear in other songs that u'd hear in hip-hop. Now musically, sometimes there is a lot to be desired, like with the simple drum and bass machines. But no genre of music has been able to blow my mind sonically as much as hip-hop, save jazz. The machines and instruments blended together is so impressive to me. And it is safe to say that there aren't too many virtuosos in hip-hop, i would put ?uestlove and Kamal of the Roots against any punk bands musicians. Kamal's keys on Dynamite still blow my mind. Basically, i love the diversity... there are the slow grooves, the fast ones for dancing and the club. I can play it when i wanna reflect.. wanna have fun.. or i wanna get at a lady. Slow or fast, complicated or simple, i love it all

i can see that you both really like hip hop and i respect that. i just think that musicaly, especially, the traditional band (i.e. drummer bass, lead guitarist etc.) takes more skill and sounds infinately better that the music churned out of a machine.
Besided i think 7 pages is long enough, we could continue for ever, this thing should die

Yes I agree... now its time to say goodbye to all our company LMAO! Now we must move on with our lives. I for one will cherish the memories that I gained from arguing about hip-hop with u hawa. Now we can induct this into the thread hall of fame.

no you didn't but you're on your way to doing so. -man in red suit
I listen to rock and i support gay rights.I do know this kid who said "I'm not homophobic but I hate gay people." what the fuck was that!?

Some kid.
Anyway my statement (about the rock thing not the gay thing) was simply to show it was wrong to say something about someoen because they listen to particular music style.
I meant it for those who stereotyped against people who listen to hip hop

hmm... well there are good sides to all the kinds of music so i can like hip hop but it depends on the message that particular song of artist is sending out.
