Prior to the opening of the V Summit of the Americas, the U.S. president, Barack Obama, approached the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, to offer a greeting. President Chavez expressed his desire to President Obama that relations between the two nations will change. "I want to be your friend" said the Venezuelan president.
President Chavez has repeatedly stated that the only thing they expect is that United States and Venezuela to respect its sovereignty.
Earlier, on arrival at Port of Spain, President Chavez had said that [this summit] shows, unlike others in the past, "a very positive flow of renewal. We are coming with all the goodwill of a brand new era on this continent: independence, respect, development of a real fighting against poverty, respect for the sovereignty of the people'', he said.
He recalled that these summits were born in 1994 to create the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), a project promoted by United States and, according to the president, would be a mechanism to try to impose colonialism.

"I want to be your friend" - Chavez, great working class guy, leader of the world's working class, wants to be 'friends' with Obama - the figurehead of American Capital, the guy who will continue sanctions on Iran as a prelude to decimating it, who will continue to watch idly as the Palestinians are ethnicly cleansed and who continue the police the world, securing ever more markets for American Capital to exploit.
Chavez is a dictator who offers nothing to the class he claims to represent, given half the chance he'd be in Obamas shoes as the worlds imperialist icon. Chavez's own expansionist ambitions for Soulth America are worrying enough without him kissing the arse of the worlds up-and-coming enemy number one.
I hope this news will be the dagger that kills off this silly idea that Chavez offers the workers of Venezuela, or anywhere else, any hope at all.
But i suspect it won't..

Chavez is the leader of a bougeois state. This is nothing shocking. Yeh, he does the 'working class hero' posturing and he has done some good stuff. But ultimately, this is his role. This is the sort of thing he is meant to do, as President.

If I ever was in a position of power, I would not search to make myself the enemy of bourgeoisie foreign governments just for the sake of it.

Hey, He even gave a book ("The open veins of Latin América" by Galeano) as a gift to Obama!
The escuálidos indeed are "shocked". And we are just joking about.

I don't think that was wrong.
While Obama is an imperialist leader, reading his autobiography, it stands clear he is light years more knowledgeable about the third world than Bush.
Therefore, it is possible to discuss with him in a grown-up way.
The reason why Chàvez was anti-Bush was not ideological, but pragmatical. The Bush regime was very much involved in trying to overthrow Chàvez, from the beginning.

What a disgraceful reformist sell-out. If I were him, I would have definitely said: "Kiss my ass, shit imperialist yankee. Go on, try and bomb us. Or maybe you are... chicken?"
But no, he can't even sacrifice his people's chance of survival in order to prove some kind of ideological point. What a bourgeois prick.

Chavez is making a good choice. We hope for the US to use diplomacy before intimidation when speaking with other world leaders, whether we like them or not, we should do the same. On this note.

HUGO: Lol Berlusconi is such a douche!
With Hugo's rhetoric and Obama's oratory, there's no telling what kind of vanity bonfire will flame.

With recent developments, I can safely say that there are basically no world leaders that I have a decent amount of respect for. Morales, Chavez, Correa, Ortega - they've all proven to forgive imperialism and/or have fallen for mere symbolism and appearances.
Obama has single-handedly killed off the "anti-war," civil rights, and other social movements in the US, and has killed off much resistance to the US abroad. Hell, the Iraqi resistance was even conciliatory to him. Unbelievable. Who are the models of resistance? Somali pirates? The Taliban? :(

I know! What a douche, doing a simple gesture of good will. To prove you're for the working class, you have to slap Obama, punch him in the nose, roundhouse kick him and give him the middle finger.

Anyhow, from the title of the thread it almost sounded as if Chavez just added Obama on facebook or something. Hopefully, that will be the extent of it!
