The United States and Cuba in 5 Years

In 5 Years (Spring 2014) . . .

A. Cuba will look more like a United States state, while the United States will generally remain as it is today (Spring '09).

B. The United States will have more "social programs" such as some kind of medical program for all (similar to European nations), while Cuba will generall remain as it is today (Spring '09).

C. Cuba will move "to the right" while the United States will move "to the left".

D. Generally speaking, nothing will change, and there will still be a trade embargo.

E. Generally speaking, relaitons and trabe between the United States and Cuba will mirror, let us say, any other Latin American island nation, such as Trinidad and Tobago, or any other South American nation, such as Brazil.

F. The United States and Cuba will undergo great change, with the United States moving to the right, and Cuba becoming a puppet of the United States.

G. The United States will be in the process of great civil unrest, making this discussion moot.

I think America will have more social programs because of the current president also because people are beginning to dislike the right more and more. Not only that but I feel that relations will open up with Cuba for reasons other than Obama's stance of acceptance already displayed toward Cuba. Times are changing and we need to be ready to take advantage of all oppertunities.

Raul Castro is a known supporter of the "Chinese model", that is to say a one party dictatorship introducing capitalist reforms step by step. If the trade blockade was to fall away, Cuba would be completely open for US goods, flowing into the country and destroying native industry.

Cuba is still deformed pre-socialist society (meaning a planned and socialised economy making progressive programs possible, such as free education and free healthcare, but controlled by a bureacratic elite), because it has remained to be a fortress over all these years.

The only long term development that can safe the gains of the Cuban revolution would be a political revolution that would oust the Cuban bureaucratic dictatorship. This in turn is most likely achieved in the wake of another socialist revolution in the area. Venezuela would be a good candidate.

But what exactly will happen in the coming 5 years? I don't know, don't have a crystal ball. Only time will tell...

I think the USA will be too tied up in other conflicts as well as inner turmoil and class struggle to actually transform Cuba, which would be near impossible at the best of times for Washington to pull off. also: Washington's leadership wants to seem more acceptable and is hoping to eventually make a profit in Cuba.

As long as we don't fuck with their sovereignty, we're looking at Cuba moving a bit to the right (not that they aren't a little right in their tendency for authoritarianism as a government), which is much needed for Cuba. Why? Why do 'we' want Cuba becoming a right-wing country? Also Authoritarianism isn't something that is either right or left.

The US is not, nor has ever been "left". I know ABC,FOX and CNN like to call the democrats "the left" but they're far,far from it. The US government bailing out Banks and Giant Corporate Insurers is something a real leftist is disgusted by.
