Pirate Bay's four co-founders face one year in prison and a $905,000 fine each. They will appeal, but the consortium of 17 media and music companies behind the prosecution will be crowing over their victory for years.

What is your position and what is the counterarguments of the leftist folk you are discussing with?
I say this kind of thing is unstoppable. The sharewares can be used for legal and illegal purposes. So making the software itself illegal is like making other things of dual or multiple use, such as knifes, illegal. Fx. you could be assaulting someone with a knife, or you could be cutting some grocery items for cooking.
I wonder what indirect culprit the companies will go after next? The internet service providers? The electrical facilities that service homes with computer users that have an internet connection?

This will at least send a message out to those who rely on torrent sites, yet are usually quite supportive of the idea of private/individual property, and "property rights". I can imagine more people becoming politically anti-capitalist due to these repressive measures.

This is a political verdict.
If the court had released them, IFPI would probably have tried to persuade the US congress to punish Sweden in some way.
The organised pirates will see this as a declaration of war.
The Pirate Party could possibly even go into the EU parliament.

I think we need to strike back! We need to show that the people do not agree with the supposedly democratic "law" of copyrights, and every respectable leftist should oppose this decision on every level. Free the freedom fighters!!!!

The Pirate Party has got 4500 more members just today! The Pirate Party now has the fourth most members of all political parties in Sweden.
There will be demonstrations all over Sweden tomorrow.

The Bourgeoisie can think they own the world but file sharing will continue.

So I wonder who needs the 12 quid for a CD more, a working class kid from a poor family or a widely rich upper middle class music exec.

Another desperate attempt by the dying recordlabels to stop the inevitable. This is a great way to make clear that capitalists are forcing their will upon the majority by misusing the justice-system and government. Capitalism is not, despite what anarcho-capitalist libertarians claim, a free market.

Most of the time something bad happens, I am not surprised. This surprised me. Sweden doing this surprises me more than anything. Outside pressure exists, sure, but I doubt it was that great. They're a well developed democratic country.
Regardless, I hope Swedish people stand up, whether electorally or otherwise. Those people don't deserve to be imprisoned. Unfortunately, even if the pirate party got elected, I suspect there are legal mechanisms that prevent the ruling from being overturned easily.

I'm not sure of the exact terms, but there's a principle in most legally constituted states that says that if a new law is passed that reduces or supress the penalty for a certain act, it applies to every sentence given previously and still in application. On the contrary, a new law increasing the penalty don't apply to acts committed before it was passed. Theoritically.
