Over 1,500 farmers in an Indian state committed suicide after being driven to debt by crop failure, it was reported today.

The agricultural state of Chattisgarh was hit by falling water levels.

"The water level has gone down below 250 feet here. It used to be at 40 feet a few years ago," Shatrughan Sahu, a villager in one of the districts, told Down To Earth magazine

"Most of the farmers here are indebted and only God can save the ones who do not have a bore well."

Thoughts?

Wow. Thats...shocking.

Yes, it is shocking. I read this article before, this is, in my opinion the most important point:

Farmers' suicides are increasing due to a vicious circle created by money lenders. They lure farmers to take money but when the crops fail, they are left with no option other than death.

Since the general election in India started, I wonder if this will affect the votes for the left parties.

Do you think climate change might be a factor in this?

No, I dont think environment is to do with this, its most explained by world recession and capitalism
This really sucks. Isn't Chattisgarh one of the areas the Naxalites operate in?

India really needs a revolution...

Yes the Naxalites are quite active in Chattisgarh.

Well I'm not a huge environmental nutter, but it said in the article and the summary that water levels have fallen from 40 feet to 250 feet (below ground level, I presume).

So yea, it obviously has plenty to do with the environment, maybe not global warming though.

shit thats fucked up :(. is the indian government doing anything to help out the farmers who are still struggling in that reigion?

"Development should be for all. The government blames us for being against development. Forest area is depleting and dams are constructed without proper planning.

All this contributes to dipping water levels. Farmers should be taken into consideration when planning policies," he said."

This is why environmental issues are important. The government is building dams and demolishing forests, and according to this person, this is causing the water levels to drop.

Hello! Do you see how ridiculous you are being?

Let me guess, India's bourgeoisie is oppressed and not really responsible?

Indeed a gruesome scene, however, according to the article hundreds have been committing suicide yearly- not a small number indeed.

Suicide is the last resort. It means that they would rather choose death than slavery. I can understand and respect the decision to end it before the money tears out your soul, however the worst part is that the Idian government doesn't give a shit about Untouchables dying. The caste system is still well alive and thriving. India needs a revelution, but who is going to do it? Most don't have the means. We would need to get a real rise out of the Untouchables, they have one of the most cruel ascribed status.

Not sure if it's ever been committed simultaneously on that scale before, but I remember seeing this: http://www.revleft.com/vb/suicides-farmers-ap-t23160/index.html?t=23160 and then there's that other news article of 150,000 committing suicide over a period of years.

It seems to be a massive problem in India. May they all rest in peace.

Can you keep your sad, pathetic and nationalist tirades against H-L-V-S out of serious threads.

If this horrendous news item has been reported by any of the imperialist-loving media here in the US, I haven't seen it. A tragedy of this magnitude should be big, right?
Nope. NIMBY.
Disgusting.

Just gos to show the importance of Revolution in India.
I remember seeing a documentary on a Coke plant in India and how it is using up vast quantities of water while the farmers crops die, I dont know if this is related or not, just it sounds similar.
The Caste system is truely disgusting.

But hey, the abundance of resources available for the proletariat in developed countries is not at all linked with the misery in developing/underdeveloped countries.
There is no limit to development and people shouldnt be ashamed of it.

Suicide beats the shit out of dying of hunger.
Its supposed to be the worst death there is.

Did I say it wasnt?

the point being of course, that capitalism is not our system, we don't run it and we don't get the benefits, we just get enough crumbs off the bosses table to keep us quiet.
"we don't employ cheap labour, we ARE cheap labour"

and if the multi national ruling class could reduce us all to the same sorry position as these indian brothers and sisters they would be quite happy to do so.
which is why we are revolutionaries, trade union activists and anti capitalists.

Well the article is from the independent so you are hearing it from the brit press. To hear it from the Indi or Guardian is not such a suprise, but to hear it from the Telegraph or Times would do it justice. I would be suprised if i hear it from them. They are most likely the most read in UK. Big shame as they are so conservative it is sickening.

The bourgeois press will report these types of news, only intermitently, it will not be shoved down peoples throats for them to care. Afterall they have little Tibet, Sudan, Zimbabwe to worry about. India afterall is supposed to be a shining example of free market democracy in a developing country.

So what's happening over there isn't due to global warming, its due to bad ideas with no foresight that were implemented earlier.

There was a famine going on in India and to help the people out, they were given genetically modified seeds that were high yield. For the seeds to work they need lots of water, so the natural irrigation system in the area was modified so that the farms using these seeds could get the amount of water they needed. The whole thing worked, people were eating, and everyone was happy, yay! Well the water table started to drop (mostly from excess drainage without being replenished, as where the water was routed did not necessarily drain back into the table) and the farmers began losing their crops, which means they lost money and now owe money to people which they cannot pay.
