I've been wondering, would money or any form of currency have a place in a Communist society? I know that it definitely wouldn't in an Anarchist Communist society but I don't know about others.

It (or credits or something) would probably be used in Socialism as workers try to transition society away from capitalism. As workers consolidate their power and begin to solve and problems in production or shortages, then money would probably become less important.
I see "communism" and "anarchist communism" as the same thing: a society without class or states. What separates communists and anarchists are views on how to achieve such a society.

There is a way of exchanging value that isn't necessarily money. If a farmer distributes his wheat to people in a gift economy, he might not feel like giving it to free riders. If a person has no way of validating that they contribute anything to the community, they might not receive much from others. Some think everyone will just have widespread charity, but that is pretty naive. There will probably be some way of documenting and looking after things.

Have a look at what the SPGB say about abolishing money (http://socialismoryourmoneyback.blogspot.com/search/label/money).

From my understanding, all forms of currency will be abolished in a Communist society. Of course while in the transition stage money will still be needed to pay wages, buy things, etc. The major difference in this stage from Capitalism would be that it wouldn't just be a few wealthy individuals owning everything. It would be regulated by the workers instead. I'm pretty sure they would negotiate what each person gets.

Thanks darrelljon for that link!
It was very helpful to look at this prospect from that angle.
In truth, I'd love to have a society without money, money leads to to many problems. =/

Don't worry, it will become a reality once we establish a worldwide Communist society. :)

I recently worked out this pragmatic issue through a discussion here at RevLeft. Please take a look at my blog entry, and at its hosting thread.

Thanks, most socialist groups (other than the SPGB) seem to shy away from discussing abolishing money altogether.
