Cops, or any law enforcement agent disguised as an anarchist participating in a black bloc. It's a pretty common thing in large-scale demonstrations.

Well, to be honest, we don't really. If it's obvious people are cops, then they're thrown out, but that's it.

Don't do stupid shit, don't trust someone you don't know with secretive stuff, and out any plants.

Actually it might seem stupid, but alot of the retarded Nationalists stuff things like maltese crosses on semi-visible parts of their black clothing.

Since in masked riots you cannot tell friend from foe.

The problem with the police is that they don't actually understand or have any knowledge of what it means to mask up, what it means to be a protestor and importantly what it means to look like one. They have very basic and simple stereotypical views of what a protester is and when undercover they dress accordingly. Furthermore, being totally uneducated about the protest movement and its politics they usually end up suggesting ridiculously violent things that not even the hardcore black blockers would suggest, especially in an open meeting or within a group.

So in my experience it's usually very easy to spot an undercover police officer.

Yeah but how?

The provocation acts of him/her could damage the overall picture of the riot.
I.e. damage to property (stores, cars etc), or turning a peaceful march into a teargas festival.

The "authoritarian" defense strategy is to guard the bloc. What's the libertarian one?

Yeah but how?

Did you not read the rest of my post?

Yeah but i considered it an isolated incident:

they usually end up suggesting ridiculously violent things that not even the hardcore black blockers would suggest, especially in an open meeting or within a group.

And what if they don't do so?

And what if they don't do so?

How could they be provocateurs if they're not proposing/inciting violence or at least some illegal act?

Well they could arrest comrades when there's panic and attacks by the riot cops, file the protesters, etc

Be careful, and always think through what you're doing.
You can usually spot them a mile off in my experience.
Though, not always.

This is just a problem with masking up, really.
Also, look for ear pieces. Saved my arse before when we spotted those. ;)

hehm, i heard that some people (;)) on our side sommetimes wear ear pieces as well during demo's/riots, either too listen to the police band (that was possible in holland until recently and is still possible in at least germany) or too communicate together over radio when they act as an steward group or other team with an special job (its easier to listen in too than mobile telephones but harder too block and more dificult too proof who said what since there is no identifying signal on the radio)

In that case it would be quite easy to spot them, wouldn't it?

Listen to the police band?

The police have reserved radio frequencies on which they use to communicate with each other.
