    Stand up, all victims of oppression
    For the tyrants fear your might
    Don’t cling so hard to your possessions
    For you have nothing, if you have no rights
    Let racist ignorance be ended
    For respect makes the empires fall
    Freedom is merely privilege extended
    Unless enjoyed by one and all

    Chorus:
    So come brothers and sisters
    For the struggle carries on
    The Internationale
    Unites the world in song
    So comrades come rally
    For this is the time and place
    The international ideal
    Unites the human race

    Let no one build walls to divide us
    Walls of hatred nor walls of stone
    Come greet the dawn and stand beside us
    We’ll live together or we’ll die alone
    In our world poisoned by exploitation
    Those who have taken, now they must give
    And end the vanity of nations
    We’ve but one Earth on which to live

    And so begins the final drama
    In the streets and in the fields
    We stand unbowed before their armour
    We defy their guns and shields
    When we fight, provoked by their aggression
    Let us be inspired by like and love
    For though they offer us concessions
    Change will not come from above

Aye, this is the modern version by Billy Bragg, different lyrics to this one. You can listen to it, and a load of other versions too, here (http://www.hymn.ru/internationale/index-en.html).

I heard that the original version (in French) was made by a proletariat after the fall of the Paris Commune. It is a classic song that has been translated into many languages. Billy Braggs wrote that later, but also the American folk singer, Pete Seeger wrote a more modern version after talking to Billy Braggs in the 1950's and 1960's when he was a Stalinist.

Care to post Pete Seeger's version?
There are many videos of him but I don't know which are 'his' version.

I prefer the classic words:

Arise ye prisoners of starvation
Arise ye wretched of the earth
Our reason thunders indignation
From the old we'll bring new birth
We'll tear down this planet's false foundation
And build a better world anew
And we that live in humble station
Shall walk erect as is our due
Through the conflict comes power
Each one lift high your face
And in the end the Internationale
Becomes the human race.However, though I'm a lyrical traditionalist, I simply adore this swinging musical update (en francais):

I heard that the original version (in French) was made by a proletariat after the fall of the Paris Commune...

The author of the lyrics was Eugène Pottier, revolutionary socialist, poet, and transport worker. He was a member of the Commune and wrote the lyrics after the fall of the Commune. Pierre Degeyter wrote the music in 1888, and it was adopted as the anthem of the Second International.

This shouldn't be in here.

why?

songs are as much a part of our political education and working class history as any other medium, in fact, i would suggest, given the censorship and denial of our role in history, they are a vital part of our understanding.

The Russian Internationale...classic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtwtoqWINc0

Strange the Hungrian version is short. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suVB3YGIUk0

Интернационал - Русский
Музыка: П. Дегейтер Слова: А.Я.

Great stuff. I have this on my MP3 player. ^_^

Hell yes, comrade, me too. :D

I think the Internationale is important, because music reaches people. Also, people are having trouble with the Cyrillic alphabet. You can learn it in one sitting, I will write it below, listed in more or less English order, rather than real Russian order:

А = A as an "father"

Б, б = B, same as English

С = English S

Д = English D

Е = "Ye", like "yay" only cut it short.

Ё = "Yo", like in city-talk when people say "Yo!", only cut it short.

Ф = English F

Г = English G as in "go."

Х = Like English H, but from the throat. Like "ch" in German "ich", Scottish "Loch", X
in Spanish "Mexico," usually represented as "kh."

Ж = Like the s in pleasure, represented as "zh", or g in beige.

К = English K

Л = English L

М = English M

Н = English N

О = English O. When unstressed, like o in bore, or a wide-mouthed version of the O in open. When stressed, about the same as Russian А. (Or vice versa, I ge them mixed up. You'll get the hang of it, if you just go with it, it should come out right.)

П = English P

Р = English R, but rolled, like Spanish double-r (rr).

Т = English T

В = English V

Й = Equivalent to English y, approximately.

И = English "ee"

З = English Z

У = English "oo"

ц = English "ts" in "sits"

ш = English "sh"

щ = Transliterated as "shch", but not really so simple. To do it, pronounce "sh" and "ch" almost simultaneously, one immediately after, running into, the other, like in "fresh-cheese", but run them together.

Ы = No English equivalent. Similar to И. It's pronounced with more of a "twang," I can't really explain. Get comrade sanpal to tell you, his native language is Russian.

Ь = "Soft sign." Think of the p in "pew" or "pure." About like that, slight y sound, but not really so pronounced. It litterally means to palatize the preceeding consonant, if that helps.

Ъ = "Hard sign." Do not palatize the preceding consonant.

я = English "ya"

ю = English "yoo", like the U in Universe.

ч = English "ch" as in "church," "chocolate."

There. You should now be able to read simple Russian. There are of course better laid out places to learn. :D

Й = Equivalent to English y, approximately.

It's more like a "yih" sort of sound, I would say.

Ы is a difficult one, I would maybe have that down as an "uiy" maybe?

As for the Markeesnak soft sign, its impossible to phonestesise it as it changes (slightly) the letter before and after it.

But nonetheless good work. Are you a student of Russian?
