Film about Spanish Civil war. Its actually quite upset me.

Word. I loved it except for 2 scenes that kind of killed it. The pissing scene and the crap with that woman being possessed.

Libertarias tells the story of Mujeres Libres, an anarchist-feminist formation that attracted around 20,000 members at its peak. There's a 1986 documentary about the group, De toda la vida, with interviews of surviving members. This movie is excellent. More recently an English study appeared called Free Women of Spain by Martha Ackelsberg. Best available source for background on the real libertarias.

Personally, I thought the movie pandered to the male viewer with unnecessary T & A scenes, and (spoiler ahead)










the women are raped by Moors while serving on the Aragon front. There were no Moorish troops there, so this invented detail smacked of racism or at the very least unnecessary titillation.

One final caveat, the movie was shot in scope and the DVD is cropped.

It's on Google Video, all in one part. The subtitles are off which makes it fucking annoying.

It refers to the format of presentation. Those black bars you see at the top and bottom of the frame indicate letterboxing. Full frame means that the image would fill the frame but the sides would be cropped or cut off.

The DVD of Libertarias is cropped; the film was shot in a scope or wide screen format so full frame viewing violates the integrity of the image. For us cinephiles this is like bowdlerizing a novel, a kind of aesthetic censorship.

I started watching it and it was really good but the subtitles on Google Video start to get really out of sync. I'll download the one posted. Thanks Socialist. BTW how do you add the subtitles Socialist?

Download the film and subtitles. Make sure that the subs are in the same location and have exactly the same file name as the film (not including the three letter extension of course). Most decent players should pick them up. Any misstiming can be corrected with a program like Vobsub.
