Can you get relatively big muscles and alot stronger just by using free weights for 15-30 minutes a day? I can't afford a gym nor does it appeal to me, I'd rather run in the park and streets and lift weights in my home. Could I expect to get noticeably stronger just from lifting the free weights I buy? Obviously i get htem of a decent size, and its dtermined by them, but generally if i was doing the right size for 15-30 mins a day would it make a difference and ho wlong would it take to see this difference?

You can get big eating lots of protein before a work out by working out really hard with low reps 8-10 is ideal for about 30 minutes every other day. Avoid cardio

Its 80% diet and rest and 20% extreme 30 minute effort, multi-joint strength training is the best. 15 minute is too short.

Your diet you should aim to gain a pound or two a week, eat frequently 5 times a day is optimum but obviously requires more effort. if you are eating 3 times a day you still should be fine.

If you are currently inactive, you will probably feel the difference within a week. IE you will feel stronger. getting bigger, its gradual, probably within 2 weeks you will notice difference from day 1.

Its not through the workout you gain muscles its from the diet and rest. The workout just tells your body where to put the diet and rest.

Well in attempts to get myself fitter I am eating less (only in meals, 3 times a day, staying below GDA intakes etc) and I do a bit of running (30 mins to 3 hours a day) and 30 mins of free weights. On that alone would I notice a distance?

People vary. I build muscle pretty fast, so whenever i'm overcome with the urge to do weights i can notice a difference pretty fast.

It always takes a lot if you want to improve your stomach. Without doing bleep tests etc, even the most skinny person will find it difficult to get a defined stomach. Running is very important if you want a good stomach.

Arms are different. You can build some pretty large arm muslce fast. I try and start lifting real heavy things at the start. That way you get big, untoned muscle. Then you can just carry on lifting the same weight and after a while it should get pretty hard.

I go through phases, which is a problem. One minute im well up for it, then i give up and lose all the hard work i put in. Good luck.

Wouldn't running just give you a normal stomach though? I.e. you wouldn't be fat but it wouldn't become toned.

I mean running combined with stuff like stomach crunches. That's the problem i had. It's a lot of effort to get rid of the layer of fat that everybody has (i have to point out here that i'm stick thin and even i have this layer). To get anything approaching a visably well toned stomach, you have to combine sprinting with stomach exercises.

Well with regards to stomach I just don't want my stomach to stick out as much. I don't care about toned i just want it flat. Could I get that just from running?

Also how do you stop the cramp from free weights? Is it just stretching? Do you still gain muscles and strength if you get the cramps?

If you want a flat stomach, then running should do it eventually, but sprinting is definatly your best bet. I guess you ought to watch what you eat (i've never done this, but like i said earlier, im stick thin) aswell.

Do alot of stretching before you do weights. Particuarly your biceps. If you have a problem with aching after, you need to slow down a bit or you can work through it and eventually (as long as you don't increase the weight you're lifting) your muscles will get use to it.

I find i get noticably stronger (as in i can beat people in arm wrestles) after about a 3 weeks-month. If arm wrestles are something you want to win (who doesn't?!?!?!) then invest in some of those wrist muscle exerciser things. You can get them for like 2 quid down JJB sports. They noticably harden your wrists after like 2 weeks.

I'm gonna do more running, and I eat quite sensibly, i am vegetarian and most stuf i eat is low calories, i dont eat chocolate or crisps, peanuts etc, and only eat at meals

i just want a bit of tonedness, alot of extra strength, etc. i want a strong arm for punching with too

Basically you just squeeze them. They're particuarly handy because you can do other things whilst using them (like watching TV).

If you want to punch harder, then you need to do your triceps, but also just need to weigh more in general. To be honest, punching hard is pretty relative and someone with slightly more muscley arms is unlikely to actually punch much harder than a normal person.

I found the best practise for fighting was have punch ups with my brother. We used to just have bare knuckle fights, but whenever anyone wanted to stop then we did. It prepares you better and you know what to expect. If you have someone you can "play" fight with, even if it's with boxing gloves, then that would be a lot more effective than building more muscled arms.

Yeh i like that idea but i've yet to find someone willing enough to do it properly, the fear is we'll seriously harm each other. thanks for the advice.

Yeah it's a bit worrying at the start. I'm always really nervous before i fight, then i get punched in the jaw and remember i'm not going to get knocked out then it becomes really enjoyable.

Well i'll be happy to punch you in the head if we ever meet.

lmao i'd really enjoy that

i know its a typical sort of macho thing but i think it'd be fun if you find someone up for it and its clearly just for the fun

i basically want to know what its like and how much i could take if i got into a real fight

but you need to have a special relationship with someone to be able to have a good punch up with them

When me and my mates are proper pissed we always have proper big punch ups (for fun). I remember i was having a fight with my mate once, and he chinned my proper hard. I kicked him in the head and his head smashed into a wall. He started bleeding loads. We then did a load of shots of vodka, fell half asleep. He walked home at about 4 in the morning, his t-shirt drenched in blood. I have to admit, i felt pretty guilty after that, but we still had fun.

I have different moods really. If you do pick a fight, my advice is to do it in a student pub, because you won't get beaten up badly.

Join a boxing / kickboxing club or gym. I regularly get the shit beaten out of me by prison gaurds , history teachers and taxi drivers and that kind of hardens me up alot and bassicly means that If I can stay in the ring with somone whom is as hench as fuck and has trained how to hurt people for twenty years then I can easily fight some little shit in the street.

Also its good general exercise since you dont really have the choice to stop for a breather in a fight. Also killerfacr is right when he says people are nervous when they are about to fight but soon the adrenalin overrides that.

I probably sound like i think i'm hard so i think i should clarify. I'm not particuarly hard, im 6ft tall and pretty skinny. I enjoy fighting and the rush you get after is really good. I'm not a deluded idiot. I wouldn't ever start on someone who wasn't up for it and i'm a pretty good judge of when to just run away.

Nothing is funner however, than having a big group punch up with your mates against some over kids.

I'm okay at fighting. What i dislike is people who are deluded as to think they can win a fight because they know some martial arts. It's bullshit.

I love the macho thing aswell. It's really fun.

Just prove them wrong by going and keep going. My mum was like that but when i came home with blood on my t shirt and bruises everywhere and kept on going she was really supportive. My dad was always supportive and pays for everything because he used to do boxing and we both no lots of boxers.

If your goal is to increase muscle mass, you'll likely fail if you're reducing your calorie intake below what your body burns. For your body to build muscle, there needs to be a calorie surplus -- i.e. you have to intake more than you burn.

If you're trying to put on muscle and you're scrawny/puny/skinny now, just bulk. Eat a lot and lift hard and heavy. You should definitely try to get a gym membership though some time soon, or if your school has a weight room, start using that.
