View Full Version : Hendrix or Marley - the hardest question of all

Lefty

Which was better?
Its like choosing between my two parents.

Rob
17th June 2002, 18:49
MARLEY!! Jimi was cool and all, but Bob, was much cooler.

Lefty
17th June 2002, 19:28
watch out, you may be hit by a falling guitar now...you may have offended the guitar gods

Rob
17th June 2002, 20:57
Trust me, after all the guitar "playing" I've done, the guitar gods would've already smited me if they'd wanted to. Although, they might've been the force that made me smash myself in the mouth with my guitar.

talent wise, i have to say, with no thought necesary: hendrix all the friggin way. without question. also sheer pleasure to listen to: hendrix all the way. no doubt

but as far as message and lyrics, it's marley.

Optimus Prime

this is like comparing apples and oranges. Rock...Reggae. Why compare?

RedCeltic
18th June 2002, 02:59
PCE said exactlly what I would have said.. hmmm.. I'm a big fan of both. However listening to Jimi also brings back childhood memories of summers visiting my hippie aunt and uncle who would blast tracks like "Machine Gun" so loud that it shook the house.

Lefty
18th June 2002, 04:08
I got a complaint from 3 houses down cuz i blasted "purple haze" and "all along the watchtower" so loud.

Definately Marley

both are incomparable. Although, Jimi Hendrix changed music forever, moreso I think than Bob Marley.

marley- more political
hendrix- more druggie

marley- more political
hendrix- more druggie

Peter Tosh-more political+druggie than both. But still a top drawer musician.
Back to the choice though,Hendrix just shades it for me.But only just.

Man you can't compare these two guy's. They both did great things for their style of music. If can say who was a better muscian, but not who's better. They both are equally awsome.

No question. Hendrix was much better. Marley has his place among the stoners but I can't stand his music when I'm sober. He was definitely influential and had a lot of great songs but he isn't my type personally. I like rock and guitar solos as opposed to hip hop rasta reggae.

Hendrix was Puff the Magic Dragon to Marley's Everyman. They taught the world that a little weed don't hurt anyone, every now and then.

RedCeltic
26th June 2002, 06:31
no, alittle weed don't hurt anyone.

For Jimi however, 8 or 9 tablets of Seconol causes death by choking on your vomit in your sleep.

Bob Dylan

deadpool 52
27th June 2002, 05:22
But if only he could play music as well as he wrote it.

Fuck Marely, Hendrix practically invented the electric guitar, it was a mere extension of himself; let alone his performance at Woodstock.

The triumph of form over content. Its all about depth man. Yeah but you are right both were great and had depth too I might add.

RedCeltic

Dylan wrote some of the greatest songs of all time. However they are better when someone else sings them. I can only listen to one or two of his songs at a time before his voice gets on my nerves.

they both were entirely phenomenal and both revolutionary in their own ways. but i have to say bob marley because i grew up listening to him and his music touches me on a more personal level. hendrix...hendrix was amazing tho. simply amazing.

Jimi.
Bob compromised his music too much.
But then he's the one that got me into it all so....fuck it. There is no answer.

jimmi for natural talent, you know he couldnt read music! i heard he played 'god save the queen' just by listening to the crowd singing it and he got each not spot on

marley wins it for lyrics and the message he conveyed. i personally prefer listening to moving lyrics rather than good tunes so he gets my vote

hard choice though

If there was no Hendrix there would never been a wah-wah pedal.

So its Hendrix.

Allthough Marley is good too.

Marley and Hendrix are gods in the great music pantheon, they are up there with Jim Morrison.
It is not like choosing between parents, it is like choosing between the god of rain and the god of agriculture. Worship them both with equal awe and you will not go far wrong.

Whoa, slow down a little. Let's not forget about Charlie Christian, okay? I know most people have never heard of him nowadays, but he's one of the greats.

Hearing Hendrix play transcends all guitarists to date.

Listen to Machine Gun, you can get more from Hendrix's riffs, than from any words could convey.

I hate you lefty, I hate with all my revolutionary fervor.
I wish there was Jimi Marley, or Bob Hendrix, I cannot choose, you ruined my life, this will plague me for years.
Bob sent the best message, JimI was a rock and roll hero. Bob lived to be thirty-six, JimI to be twenty-six,
I don't know, htey are both equal, If I had to choose, I wouyld fight free from my captors and never give an answer.

JimI and Bob rull!!

Howabout...It is more of a shame that bob died young because he would have gone on to much more, whilst Hendrix was already beginning to slow down. But I do hate you lefty, as well as whoever revitalized this.

The fuck are yo people confused for?

I love Jimi's music with all my soul

but he isn't fit to clean the bugs from Bob's grave

Jimi wasn't worthy enough to lick the mud from Marley's boot

Marley is the winner hands down.

only person ever who's had an album in which every song on it was just as good as the other, and every song on that album (exodus) was beyond incredible

In my opinion Hendrix rules, hands down. Marley is alright, but nothing compared to Hendrix, he's a guitar
god!

Dhul Fiqar
13th May 2003, 13:28
The comparison is absolutely impossible, totally differeint styles. Jimi Page vs. Jimi Hendrix, ok. Peter tosh vs. Bob Marley, ok.

But Jimi and Bob are just nothing alike, totally different people and totally different music.

That being said, I prefer reggae, so I say Bob. :)

Hendrix kicks the shit out of Bob, music-wise. But as for message, Bob wins.

Honestly, I like Bob's music way better. I know Hendrix is a much more advanced guitar player, but as for what sounds good (to me) I have to go with Bob.

Question, why do people act like Bob is the only relevant reggae musician ?

Rastafari
15th May 2003, 18:19
because he is the easiest to understand/relate to, and probably the overall best

Hendrix was a legend of the guitar, I never saw Marley burn his.

bob wins hands down, for his words of wisdom, for the effort he made trying to bring peace and love to the world esp. Africa and last for the politic strugle he endured in Jamaca

this is one choice that is hard to make, both of these guys were unique in their own way, bob marleya nd jimi hendrix were like 2 of the greatest of their kind. I for one cannot decide, tough choice!

Marley, Hendrix was great at guitar. But bob marley is had good lyrics, smoked way more weed, and is more relaxing, Hendrix, was just like kurt cobain on guitar except a hell of a lot better(i mean kurt cobain as in when he uses all those effects and like it just sounds like hes breaking shit...check the star spangeled banner by hendrix he goes crazy at the end)

Hendrix V Marley?

Comparisons are odious, they are both genuine musical legends.

Well Hendrix is possibly in the 2 top guitar players ever second only to perhaps Brian May, Slash or Eric Clapton. There is so little to choose between all of them they all really skilled. All of who I consider second place as there is so little to choose between them.

David Gilmour and Kurt Kobain are both amazing as well and could possibly earn a place in the top 10...

It also pains me to admit it but Tom Morello is good as well even though I dislike the band's music.

Ohh my god I just remembered Jimmy Page... How could i have not included him until now. I am deaply ashamed.
