Although I love Baron Cohen's work and I think he's fucking excellent, my current thought is:
"Oh god, here we go again with the fucking impersonations." True dat.
Here's how you might want to think about it. See, Cohen has this ability to put the focus on the subject of his interviews and the viewer, rather than himself. Thus, I think each impersonation is really a tool he uses to get people to express their own absurdities, and as there are an infinite number of absurd fools out there, there's a persistent novelty to his approach. It reminds me of the old addage: "nobody ever lost money overestimating the stupidity of the American people." Well at least until GM began producing the Hummer.

I ask light-heartedly and with an appreciation for Sacha Baron Cohen, should leftists approve of humiliating radicals (albeit far from left-wing ones) like Ron Paul in an infantile way? Lets not forget as Ali G he embarrassed Noam Chomsky and Tony Benn.

How much of that do you think is because you became so familiar with the character on the AliG show that it became too predictable? If that were brand spanking new, a lot of the novelty was well-deserved.

SWP article on the film
Bruno: A homophobic and tedious failure of a film
http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/art.php?id=18381
Attacking both gays and bigots doesn’t make everything equal and leave us where we started – the film fails to take sides, and as such does nothing to undermine anyone’s anti-gay ideas.Theres always a handful of humourless lefties often brainlessly attack anything dealing with PC that doesn't hammer out a lesson in its favour in black & white as if the rest of the population are too dumb to recognise where the humour actually lies. While there is that brainless minority who take comedy literally (see republicans who think Colbert really means it deep down, or teenagers who immitated Catherine Tate's character or Vicky Pollard) it shows an overall patronising attitude toward everyone else by assuming that they are incapable of making the distinction in my opinion. Stephen Merchant (works with Ricky Gervais) said this a couple of years ago which pretty much nails it:
"[W]e deal in taboos and hot areas by appearing to approach them from a non-PC standpoint, but as soon as you even introduce topics that PC has declared off limits, people assume you are trying to be dangerous and politically incorrect. Often we're all unsure of what to say, for example, in the company of someone who is disabled. These are areas ripe for comedy because of social anxiety, not because the subject itself is intrinsically funny. A joke about race, and about how we react to race, is not necessarily a racist joke. That is fundamental. Political correctness has made the world better for those who might otherwise have been unfairly marginalised, but there is the problem of the idea that you cannot discuss different areas for fear of being politically incorrect."

Comedy doesn't need to share my politics to be funny, but there are some things that cross the line such as minstrel shows - would it be humorless to criticize this popular form of comedy from the slavery-era to the early part of the last century?
Personally I think there are two ways to make fun of people: populism or elitism. The difference between Colbert and Cohen is that Colbert's character is making our leaders look like asses - it's the congressmen and pundits that are the dupes we laugh at. In Cohen's work, he makes fun of Ron Paul (Yeah I'll watch that part) but the big celebrities are in on the joke when they are "pranked". Regular people, on the other hand, are not in on the filming and are ridiculed. It's not humorlessness to think that such elietism is simply not funny just as it's not being humorless or "PC" not to laugh at a co-worker's rape joke or immigrant joke.

i saw it on Saturday. It had it's moments but it was a bit of a dissapointment all round. I have buyers remorse now.
Opinion: wait for the dvd. Borat may be ''so 2006'' but Bruno is no Borat.
EDIT: that socialist worker review is pretty much on the money. In fact it made me realise more ways in which the film is bad that i overlooked when watching it.

Comedy and irony aside, it wasnt. It was a bad film.
Even if you ignore the cringeworthy script, without posting spoilers the narrative was all over the place.

The Ron Paul bit is very funny. He looks so vulnerable when Bruno asks if he wants champagne and starts dancing.
Then when he pulls his pants down and Ron Paul goes straight to the door, then when he gets outside "he's a queer, he hit on me an he pulled his pants down"

After what that Zionist toolbag did to exploit that poor Romanian village in Borat (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-415871/Borat-film-tricked-poor-village-actors.html) (which, btw, was also a racist cheap shot at Kazakhs), I can't stomach this Cohen motherfucker. Why is it that his targets of ridicule are always disempowered people? His slander against Kazakhstan is even more ridiculous when you consider the fact that the country is one of the most ethnically diverse places in the world--they have very few problems with anti-Semitism.
How about portraying a new Israeli character, who hates Palestinians and refers to them as sub-humans who deserve to be gassed? He could live on his illegal settlement and practice shooting at Palestinian trespassers while stuffing his face with matzo balls.
This parody will never happen because only disempowered people can be the butt of jokes in capitalist humor.

Yeah. I especially liked the one dude who was do over the top "GGGRHRRRG" when Bruno was saying the go straights stuff. But was freaking out all like "AHHRGHHHG???" when they started kissing. His expression was priceless.
But yeah, the homophobes weren't just in the movie, like ten people walked out of the showing I was at saying "this is gay shit, I didn't think it'd be like this". The funniest thing was, they didn't leave after the talking Penis and beginning sex scene but not until Bruno and Lutz, or whatever his name was, were tied together.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades (the Palestinian nationalist militias in the West Bank) now plan to target Sacha Baron Cohen saying "The movie was part of a conspiracy against the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades.". Anyone who thinks this is an appropriate response I would have to ask if they think it would be an appropriate response from the Ron Paul tendency too.
