I'm not exagorating now, this band used to rule my entire life; Manics and Placebo. I was a walking talking cliché - leopard skin, eyeliner and a frown on my face, i loved that band.

As for the music, the early stuff is amazing, some of the best songs ever written. After Richey left/died/fucked off/drowned/whatever the fuck he ever did, the music was just never the same. A few good tunes of course, they aren't bad now, its just hard to match what they had before.

If anyone wants to get into them then their discography is very simple:

Richey albums:

Generation Terrorists (92 i think)
Gold Against The Soul (93)
The Holy Bible (94)

post-Richey albums:

Everything Must Go (96)
This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours (98)
Know Your Enemy (2001)

Zippy. :)

Yea, this Richey guy was/is... interesting.
Didn't the fishermen just found a part of his body from some lake or whatever? It was in the news, I'd remember.

And usually it is true: when somebody (as important as Richey) "leaves/dies/fucks off/drowns", the music is totally not the same.

Ok, time for me to go to bed now.

It was a shoe, but it was made after his death and it wasnt his "style" anyway, so its not his. The mystery is still in one piece, sadly.

Zippy - ditto. I used to love the Manics. I grew out of them though. The Holy Bible and Generation Terrorist are still excellent albums, but once Richey left, they lost their fire. I spent a whole year with The Holy Bible on repeat, too paranoid to leave my room and socialise cos I was too self-conscious. I remember instead of talking to people, I used to play the "obliterates your meaning" bit off "Mausoleum" off The Holy Bible in my head. Wow, I was a sad kid at 13...

Their Richey Edwards stuff was exceptional and Motorcycle emptiness remains possibly my favourite song. Meaningful lyrics too. They did go off the boil for a bit but I think their last album " Know your enemy" is worthy. It does contain some crap but there are loads of references to Cuba ( where their album tour began) and besides lyrics that make a point there are some good melodies. "Baby Elian" and " Let Robeson sing" are to my taste, and there are others worth the effort.
I think I met James Dean Bradfield in North Wales last year, up a mountain, or he has an exact twin!! I didnt let him know I recognised him, maybe I thought it would be naff! Anyway he was a really nice guy. We needed help with directions and he was very helpful and walked with us for a bit!

i have got all their albums after richey, but prefer their music with richey after downloading a few songs. everything must go was boring indie rubbish, as was this is my truth (i do like indie, but most of the songs of EMG and this is my truth were a bit crap. apart from if you tolerate)

the holy bible is one of the best albums ever, lyrically it is painfully honest, and musically they remained brilliant after richey, i mean everything must go is a brilliant album, but they lost the rage that they had before, whilst still remaining vital though

I'd pretty much agree that post-Richey they definately lost an edge.
The Holy Bible is the dog's..

Motown Junk is one of the Greast Songs Of All Time -- you gotta love a tune with "I laughed when Lennon got shot" in the chorus. The Holy Bible is one brutal album, but a bit self-pitying. Now they seem a bit boring, but still better than any other indie shit. Its a shame there's no bands like them any more [sigh]

What ever happened to Richey James?

He disapeared, and nobody as seen him since. Some say suicide, some say he is still alive and living in India somewhere; i say the man topped himself.

ok, It's all coming togither now. that is what I had thought happened. Yeah, I would say that suicide is the most logical explanation for his disapearence.

He certainly was a pretty young man, such a shame his head was in such a mess.

Zippy.

PS. Lets see if we can get through a Manics discussion without "4Real" being shown. :)

As someone who has a dodgy history with self-harm and has seen more than one friend in hospital cos of suicide attempts through self-harm, that is not funny. What is your fucking problem you stupid moron?? Shut the fuck up.

that's him?? i thought that was a girl.

NEITHER IS THAT YOU STUPID REDNECK. Why can't you just say something mature for a fucking change?? I get comments like that at skool all the time from conservatives, are you one of them?? What the fuck are you doing here anyway?? You hate anarchy, you're a Zionist, you're stupid...you sound like the perfect cappie. Sort it out you stupid boy.

About Richey, or do you look like a girl?

As mentioned before, i used to dress like the manics and there were a few times when people wanted to beat me up for it. I nearly got attacked at a McDonalds once (my g/f wanted one, not me) by someone who was calling me a "fag" and a "queer", and in his own wisdom he thought i needed a kick in the head because i wasn't like him.
Such is life though.

The logic is: I have longish black hair, I wear unorthodox clothes, I talk to people regardless of their reputation and am not homophobic, therefore I am a girl/gay. I'm often called both, which is quite amusing to be honest.

I get comments shouted down the street all the time. Once, I was beaten up by about 16 6th formers when I was 14 cos of my hair (it was brushed into the centre, to give a mohican look, a la Fran Healy). Also, kids have followed me and tripped me up, and I got mugged in France in a phonebox by two kids wearing all yellow. One of them stabbed me, the bastard. Not hard, cos the blade fell out though, haha...

Maybe I went over the top in my last post, but I wish to fucking God that MitRS would post a message without being stupid!! He has made a lot of enemies on this site, and it's easy to see why.

calm down there man. I just complementing Richey. I think it's kool that he looks like a girl. I think he looks pretty kool.

as for the suicide thing. What are you talking about? Richey James carved the words "4real" into his arm. He was a self mutilist. I was making fun of that, not your friends. i think you need to chill out.

and why are yu upset about making fun of self mutilation? I think it is pretty silly to cut yourself, I don't understand why you are angry at me for saying that. Comments like that are not stupid. You are simply have a little too much hatred in you. I'm not a homophobe.
I don't have any problem with cross-dressin or anything else of that matter. I'm not making fun of Richey James or your suicidal friends. Cool out man. Go take a nap, you'l fell better.

"why are yu upset about making fun of self mutilation? I think it is pretty silly to cut yourself..."

Well thank you for your little pearl of wisdom. You know what?? I think it's pretty silly for you to constantly spout bullshit. You don't have a fucking clue what you're talking about, so I suggest you shut up before you seriously insult me.

"I don't understand why you are angry at me for saying that. Comments like that are not stupid."

Wow...really?? Work it out you dumb fuck. Pretty much everything you've ever posted on this site has been stupid. I don't need to list it, you just have a remarkable knack for spouting utter bollox.

"I'm not making fun of Richey James or your suicidal friends. Richey James carved the words "4real" into his arm...I was making fun of that."

You contradicted yourself. And I fucking know what Richey did, probably a long time before you did. I suggest you think several times before you post. Actually no, just don't post at all. All you ever do is talk shit anyway.

Y'know, Richey Edwards provided some lyrics for Everything Must Go. He wrote Kevin Carter, and I think A Design For Life among others from the album.

I was on a camp last week - on a fuckin' great one - and I had lots of cds with me, but the only one I listened to, was the Holy Bible. I never really got into it before, I didn't have the time for it, but now I can't be without.

This fuckin' rocks!

..Still listening to it. Now I've even listened the whole album through, and I lovelovelove this!

What are your favourite songs? No matter are they lyrically or melodically, just list them.

Let Robeson sing is a nice one
IfTheWhiteAmerica... is a "jump all over the house"-song
4st 7lb is a *sniffy sniff* song
P.C.P is a TRALALALALA!! song

Nah, they are all great in Holy Bible!

By the way, is it Richey Edwards or James?

Zippy
12th July 2002, 19:37
Its both, Richey's real surname was Edwards but he used James as a pseudo-surname, as it were.
