View Full Version : Titoism and the Praxis School

I have stumbled upon some interesting info on an Marxist academic group in Tito's Yugoslavia that published a political and philosophical journal called Praxis.

Apparently, these folks had been involved in the anti-fascist Partisan resistance in WW2 and, after Tito's SFRJ was established, demanded reforms towards a more 'authentically Marxist' socialism as well as social (as opposed to economic) liberalism.

According to this article by Noam Chomsky,

http://www.chomsky.info/articles/19740207.htm

there were two strands within the group, of which the second one soon prevailed: an "orthodox one which stayed within the traditional framework of dialectical materialism", and a humanist one "which emphasized the anticipatory and critical character of theory (...) its great role in the process of humanization of a given society".

I'm guessing the latter means that this group was closer to Western Marxism/neo-Marxism (idealism?)

The Chomsky article is also interesting because it features a chronology of the tensions between the Titoist regime and the Praxis group, and describes the 1968 occupation of Belgrade University by leftist students.

Marxists.org have a handful of Praxis texts available in their archives:

I'm wondering if any of you are familiar with Praxis thought and, if so, if you have any opinons on the group and their specific ideology?

I'd also be greatly interested in reading texts by this or similar groups that specifically focus on the situation in Tito's Yugoslavia, offer an inside analysis of its society and/or demand reforms. According to Chomsky, such texts were written by the Praxis group, but marxists.org don't carry them. If you referred me to any such writings, I'd be very thrilled.
