I just turned 18 this January, and today I just got a jury duty notification... ordinarily I would just throw the letter out and get on with school, but I am kind of interested, my town is pretty damn racist, and I think I would be more neutral than most of the people who would replace me...
You guys I actually go through with this?

I'm pretty sure you have to show up, and the penalties for not going are pretty serious from what I've heard. At any rate, most people look at jury duty as an annoying chore that takes up a weekend, and that's usually what it boils down to, but it can be occasionally interesting and you can have quite an impact in people's lives.

As a side-note, since the prosecution and the defense can take certain people out of juries (and oftentimes try their best to get minorities, etc. out of juries if it serves their case), I wonder how they would deal with leftists if they knew their politics. Has anyone had experience with this?

You dont exactly know somebody is a leftist just by looking at them. How would they kick you out then?

IIRC, both the prosecution and the defense get to interview potential jurors before the selection process. I'm wondering if political views ever come up and if so, how lawyers might respond to a revolutionary leftist.

Lawyer: "Okay, one final question: what political party do you support?"

You: "The communist party."

Lawyer: "Get out now."

DO IT. If nothing else, it's a cog to throw into the capitalist/racist judicial system.

Yes, both sides can remove jurors, and for ANY reason they see fit. Including race - they don't have to declare their reasons.

If you want to be ont he jury, don't dress odd at all. Just wear something that makes you look indescribable. If they fit you into any archetype, even preppy, square or dull, they will probably kick you. Don't look at anyone funny, don't respond to anything radically. Look pretty agreeable - they want someone they can push around.

And yes, it is a serious infraction to skip out on jury duty. You will have more problems down the line if you do.

My usual response to "duties" is "resistance to the last man", as I see that my only duties are to the working class, and not to any artificial construct called state. However Jury duty could sound like a chance to make an impact, but if the lawyers really can kick you out without a reason, I just think it is a big joke. I would refuse to bow to anyone, even if it lead me to jail.

I'd try to resist jury duty. Do you really want to be partly responsible for sending someone to prison? If not, what are you going to do if all other jury members say that the person on trial is guilty?

Then you vote for what you think is true. You still have a vote if the rest of the jury disagrees with you, and if the verdict isn't unanimous it puts a lot of doubt on the prosecution (I don't know what's needed for a hung jury, though). A juror who votes for not guilty cannot logically be held responsible for sending anyone to prison as you suggest, and more importantly I don't think you can fault anyone who approaches a case with a fair and honest mindset.

But I think we have to remember that most juries deal with pretty boring stuff from what I hear, but then again we don't know what this case is.

I filled out the form and sent it in, however I said that the jury duty at the time would be highly inconvenient for me at the time, being a high school student finishing up my education, however if the trial comes after my my graduation day I would have no difficulty doing my jury duty.
