Most of my favourite bands are not rebellious at all..i mean.they might be rebellious, but they do not display it in an angsty way like no surprises and you and whose army of radiohead...like the beatles songs...then of course you got the great openly leftist billy bragg...anyways..just wanted to see your opinions..

Radiohead are infuckingcredible, my favourite band of all time. I listen to music for music's sake, not cos it's rebellious. Obviously, if the lyrics are good, I'm more likely to like em, but good lyrics don't have to be political.

I can't speak for the rest though...

I listen to a lot of different artists just because I like their stuff as pieces of music. Coincidentally all the real consumer music is total shit, so I dont really listen to that.

Well, I like virtually all music, but more of my favorites are political or philosophical in some way.

However, many of my favorites are apolitical. I love all electronica -most electronica songs have no lyrics at all. I also love Led Zeppelin, and I have never considered them to be largely political. And, yes, Radiohead are gods. I also LOVE Depeche Mode.

Edit: I guess it all depends on how you're defining "rebel music" huh?

And btw, Radiohead are actually pretty political. Thom Yorke is always speaking out against Bush, Blair et al, and he has lent his support to Jubilee 2000 and many other worthwhile projects. Also, Radiohead did a tent tour where there were no sponsors at all. When I saw em @ Oxford last summer, they also had no sponsors, instead having an Oxfam tent and somewhere to hand in old mobile phones...

Not at all... I listen to pop punk and emo predominantly, very little of which is radical by nature

Are all of you forgetting RATM??
they make uncredible music, rebellious, good, classic...everything.....:)
The clash is very good, sex pistols :), coldplay I like very much(went to a concert here with them they are great),
and a lot of other indy rock bands from the UK (btw, should we call britain that any more :))
ohh..and not to forget about some rap music..

I don't listen only to rebel music (although I listen to it very much indeed). I also do like folk-music from different peoples, classical music and just some nice songs, old and new, almost everything except techno and modern trance (I've quite much enjoyed the Tibetan trance but it's religious).

hmm..religious, what is the matter about being religious,
I know Marx theories about religion, I understand them, but I donīt agree, I am religious and it only helps me, maybe the opium of my soul, mabey, but it helps me, makes me stronger...and it is not like I am in a cult or something..;)

Most, if not all of the music I listen to is either based on youth rebellion or political rebellion, or both. If it's not punx, skins, rude boys and rastas, it's guerillas or protesters. I don't really listen to mainstream music. And yes, Billy Bragg is very cool, especially for a folk musician.

Drum 'n' bass is the way forward. Well, for me at least.

A lot of people think electronica music is pretentious and petit bourgeois, but breakbeats, downbeat, triphop & DnB are in fact quite accessible, only most people tend to equate it with glossy, flamboyant, idiotic ravers, the beautiful poster people who dress to the nines for raver parties. The ones who ooze sex appeal and exhibit the latest fashionable trends. Ah, the power of advertising.

But walk into a DnB club, and then go to a rave party, then you might just see a difference in the crowd, and the music.

i listen to mainly punk or metal, although some alternative is good (The Cranberries). Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, T.S.O.L., and Pennywise are amazing and they have great political motivated lyrics. Flogging Molly is an amazing Irish Punk band

Radiohead is good music i think, i like listening to it when i'm reading, and it's quite relaxing.
And i like primus because it's so... weird.
Thats about all the non-'rebellious' music i listen to.

And Pennywise are hypocrites, after the terrorist attack on amerika, they were all like: "Oh we are soo sorry, we didn't mean all the stuff we said"
And they are against censorship and for some reason they censored the word fuck on one of there albums...

Of course most listen to music that is not always rebellious. If you do that's lame because you are not truly appreciating music. Speech from Arrested Development once said, "Music can not revolutionize anything, only the people can revolutionize." So rebel music is cool but ya gotta listen to a lot more to really appreciate the world of music. I hate what Jay-Z stands for but I like his music. I hate redneck country bastards but I think country is cool. I hate the masses of drugged out, zombied hypocritical deadheads but LOVE the Dead. I think Louis Armstrong was amazing but he was used.

But I do like rebelious music like: RATM, Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, Arrested Development, Michael Frenti, Bob Marley, KRS-One (although he is a hypocrite), Fishbone and Malte's MP3 of the month is a treat.

BTW, I need to add that Depeche Mode SUCKS!!!!!!

I think dance music is be political -- listen to 'strings of life' (the greatest dance tune of all time) by Derrick May -- even thought there are no lyrics it still makes you wanna dance and be free. Shit, im sounding like a hippy. Some of the biggest riots/demos in the UK were against the Criminal Justice Bill -- the Tory governemnt making it illegal to
"meet in quantitys of more than 50 to listen to music characterised by repeating rythems"
; so perhaps dance music is political.
By the way, how is KRS-one hyocritical, J?

Although a big fan of Rage, i appreciate alot of really good music. The Smashing Pumpkins, the Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, Cat STevens, Radiohead, THE Grateful Dead, none of which are outright political. Music isnt all about the causes that the band members happen to agree with.

Am i the only one that also listens to classical...

I'm classically trained, so I'm pretty knowledgable on the subject. However, I don't often listen to it through choice. What era do you listen to??
