"A unified party of the Italian right, bringing together followers of Silvio Berlusconi (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/silvio-berlusconi), the prime minister, and the spiritual heirs of Mussolini's fascist blackshirts will formally be created tomorrow by delegates at a congress convened to inaugurate the movement.

"Speaking from a giant platform in an immense exhibition hall, Berlusconi last night declared the gathering open and moved closer to realising his most cherished dream - leading a single power-bloc of the right."

Etc.

Silvio Berlusconi has always impressed me as something of a scumbag.

Given his gaffes, and given the gaffes of the "spiritual heirs of Mussolini's fascist blackshirts," I don't see this unified party as being much of a physical threat.

Berlusconi is in power, so a larger party is a significant threat...

In spite of his gaffes, he still achieved to be president of the council, to tame the justice and break the opposition. In all aspects, whatever he plans to do is a threat.

How long does he plan to stay in power, I mean he's what now, 71?
I often fluffed when I talked about Berlusconi and called him Mussolini, it seems that I wasn't that wrong.
A unified right-wing party is a threat because the last thing the left thinks of is unifying...

The main problem is that the left don't win by unifying, but by forming rainbow coalitions, while the right parties much more easily could agree on things in general. I think it means that it is easier to prevent something than to make something happen.

This is preposterous. The USSR should have liberated Italy instead of the US, than they would have eliminated and punished all collaborating with the fascist, like they did in the GDR. (Also the soviets would have revealed the collaboration of the Vatican which is also responsible of the fascist atrocities). Gah I am really annoyed about this.

Would I be wrong in saying that it is now common knowledge about the vatican fascist link? Just people do not pay any attention to it, because it happened ages ago? When nowadays when a Soviet crime comes out of the woodwork, everyone raves and shivers about it as if it happened yesterday. Not to sound too harsh on the vatican, but im actually surprised that anyone takes them very seriously after such a collabration. Yet we still have a pope who is insistant on coming out with more and more backwards notions by the day.
