I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it and I thought you all may enjoy reading the lyrics
As soon as your born they make you feel small,
By giving you no time instead of it all,
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all,
A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school,
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool,
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules,
A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.
When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years,
Then they expect you to pick a career,
When you can't really function you're so full of fear,
A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV,
And you think you're so clever and classless and free,
But you're still fucking peasents as far as I can see,
A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.
There's room at the top they are telling you still,
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill,
If you want to be like the folks on the hill,
A working class hero is something to be.
A working class hero is something to be.
If you want to be a hero well just follow me,
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Yeah, you've got to love John Lennon. Telling working people not to revolt and to be peaceful, while he's living in his richass Dakota apartments.

Remeber though, he grew up in working class liverpool and his innocent mother was killed by a cop when he was little.

I guess I'll finally jump in.
The Beatles had an interesting road; starting as mostly pop rock and, after travel and drugs, morphing into some of the most acid-influenced music out there. But they are not, none of them, 'working class heroes.'
John Lennon does have a unique voice in music history, but his songs belong more at AIDS charities and WTC disaster benefits than at activist rallies or WTO demonstrations.
It's far too easy to say 'Imagine,' and tell everyone to 'give peace a chance' and not really do anything more. That's sort of the problem actually. We can imagine all day and still be in the same place tomorrow.
Lennon:
Good music? Sure, why not, not the worst.
'Working class hero'? Uhm, no.

Sypher,
Don't get me wrong, I love classic rock, and many Beatles albums are great.
I simply know too many people who like to pretend they work for change by listening to Beatles albums then sending money to some charity. And, for better or worse, I've come to associate the average Beatles fan with your typical champagne revolutionary; feeling bad for everything and wishing it could all change, and wishing, and wishing, and wishing...and never really doing anything more.

'I want all people to be the same and have the same opportunities, I'm not a communist though. I don't agree with them in many points', Lennon said.
A great song, by the way. I better like Imagine.

Wait a tick...
So are we saying that only a Communist can possibly be a "working class hero"?

Well John Lennon wasnt working class, homes adjacent to the one he was brought up in now sell for about £300,000, a lot for Liverpool. So the calls of traitor are not founded. yes he lived a lifestyle that wasnt truly leftist, but I dont believe it was ostentatious either. He lived in an apartment, not a country estate!! The accusation that his songs are charity gig fodder clearly shows a confusion with John and the other Beatles, notably Paul , who lacks the intelligence to know any better or to be political at all. A song like Pauls Freedom would, I believe make John shudder. Not only is the tone of working clas hero clearly leftist, but Johns anthem, imagine bears more than a resemblance to the main points of the communist manifesto: no religion, no countries, no possessions and ultimate peace. I agree that he may not have been a man "of" the left, but was certainly "for" the left. He has played a big role in awakening my political consciousness and I dont see why that cant apply to millions of others too. Id like to see the CIA file on the man!!
