As for me. I like metal (death, doom, thrash, modern, old school), punk, hip-hop, ska, industrial, goth, hardcore, grunge, oi!, techno, alternative, classic rock and reggae.
Apart from that, I could pretty much tolerate everything except country and pop.

i listen to old school rap ('90-'97) and only quality new rap. back then, rap lyrics had meaning now most rap music is being taken to seriously and people are killing over it. i also like, R&B music. i love those panty-dropper songs.
Old School Rap is from 79' to about '88 dude.

Rap stopped being old skool when I was a tot. Weren't Tupac and Biggie killed in 1996 and 1997 respectively?
What newer rappers do you like, though?

they have fun doing what they do for a living, just like the Nappy Roots and Black Eyed Peas(i like them too). its something i can listen to after a long day at school and just relax and get in a positive mood.
I love BEP. They've take Hip Hop back to what it used to be - fun. They do what they want and have a good time doing it. They don't need to be conscious or bling blinging to do their shit.
I mostly listen to punk, emo, indie, screamo, grunge, jazz, and "classical" but I'm pretty much open to anything. I love going dancing to electonica, and lately I've been listening to a lot of goth.

I LOVE most anything in the industrial genra. I like industrial, noise, dark ambient, melodic noise, harsh EBM, neo classical, basically anything dark and/or harsh in the industrial genre.

hey Shyne, thats cool, whatever lifts your spirits....I guess some rap beats are hypnotic and if you don't listent to their (generally speaking) boring, uninspiring lyrics you can come away in a poitivie frame....
hey RGacky3, if you like dark, ambient, classical, like jazz, with some heavy drum beats now and then, I suggest Amon Tobin, Quantic or Bonobo, definitely cannot go wrong, all instrumental, very very delicious.

Hip-hop as a genere kind of declined in the late 90's with dipshits like Eminem but there are still new hip-hop artists such as Jurassic 5, N*E*R*D, The Kottonmouth Kings, that keep the genere alive. Still, nothing beats ICE-T. Generally, all of the members of NWA that are still alive are still good (except Dr. Dre).

okay mon, we gunna break it down like dis, da hip hop, rap scene be makin' a livelihood for all da kids livin in da ghetto, it be someting creative for da young yutes to do instead of shootin and lootin', wit so much disease in da ghetto, caused by the rich motha fuckas letting drugs into dis ****ry, via programs like the contra and me man Ollie North, the first place to seel a crack rock seems to always end up in our ghettos, so get dis straight! Rap be a new music, born out of jazz, born out of rock, born out of country, born out of everyting else, all fused and sampled and amped out, so before you write off one line of garbage, you better tink twice me main man!

uh....... i couldnt quite understand what it was u were saying but if im correct your supporting rap. If i was a little harsh i apologize. I still think it is a horrible excuse for music though. it has no melody to it. I clutch on to my brain when listening to it. It is like spikes going through my head, i cant stand it! I respect your opinion though. Maybe it is not all burgeois. I am sorry.

ALL RAP IS, IS SOMEONE TALKING VERY FAST BEHIND A LOOPED BEAT, THAT IS NOT MUSIC, ITS CRAP........... now industrial thats some thing different, industrial is the best type of music.
I listen to Punk (Oi!, '77, old school hardcore), Reggae, and ska (but only the stuff that isn't bastardized from being mixed with pop-"punk")
some people are so fucked up.. thinking music MUST have
a melody
a rhythm
a danceable beat
nice vocals
a chorus
lyrics
singing
rap
REAL instruments
ONLY electronic stuff
and other stuff.... i mean... what is up with that? i am not trying to offend anyone cause i suppose you all have quite a wide range of music tastes.... but doesnt it get on your nerves when one person tells you 'NIN are so POP' and another 'NIN arent even music, i hate them'........ you guys/gals know what i mean?
maybe the 'artist' doesnt want you to dance to his music, maybe they dont want music to stay the same for hundreds of years.. blablbabla.... ;)
and what is pop? i suppose everything that you mention in this forum is main-stream/pop if I can buy it where i live... if we talk about bands and still most of us know them, they ARE pop...
industrial is pop
dance is pop
electronica is pop
metal is pop
punk is pop
pop is pop
jazz is pop
classical music is the most POPular, probably ;)
grunge is pop
country is pop
..... well, i dont really mean all that the way it might sound... i think you should appreciate music, or not... it's okay if i dont like something... but that doesnt mean it sucks....
my music taste is 100% main-stream
Aphex Twin
Air
Die Ärzte
Nick Cave
Nick Drake
Depeche Mode
Mesh
Bob Dylan
Leonard Cohen
Cypress Hill
Lamb
Portishead
Die Toten HOsen
Nine Inch Nails
Mozart
Bach
Vivaldi
Brahms (i dont know shit bout classical music, btw... ;))
Einstürzende Neubauten
The Cure
Sisters of Mercy
Velvet Underground
Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins
Telefon Tel Aviv
Travis
REM
Moby
............ and others.. i mean... tool... duke ellington... hmm letmithink... ultravox... sex pistols.. die toten hosen... staind... bob marley.. the clash.. the doors. * van morrison.. tom waits... massive attack...
so basically melody/lyrics-oriented platinum-selling mainstream... not all that much hiphop... and of course i forgot many many many.... but who cares....
(i just wrote this post cause i have a small dick, in case any of you wondered why i was so self-righteous and stuff... ;))

Personally, I love hip-hop and I think that anyone who says it all sucks hasn't heard it all because they'd know that a great deal of it is the most creative, intelligent, and melodic music on earth. Hip-Hop, in my honest opinion, is the most creative form of musical expression on the planet. At least African-Americans still have it and it isn't one of the African-American musical forms that has been excessively & horribly manipulated by whites (Just about every form of American music is completely of the black [or other people of colour] persuasion or originated from one of those forms: jazz, rock [various types of it], country, blues, electronica [basically came from hip-hop]). Don't hate. Rap really is something for people of the ghetto and it functions in a way as an escape and as something to let the ghetto-dwellers know that someone knows what they're going through. Seems to me like most of you guys who can only dis rap are really narrow-minded. Have any of you guys ever listened to Nas, Mos Def, Common, Black Star, or Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek? Do so..
Oh yeah, and: RATM = POP.. Just thought I'd let you all know because you guys seem to be pretty ignorant to that fact.
Fabi is correct on that.
I like Portishead, Bob Marley, Duke Ellington, and Cypress Hill.. :)
Thanks! Peace out..

I myself started out with hip hop, but found myself getting more into understanding sampling and turntabilism, so I went back in da day and began to find all my favorite hip hip songs were even more amazing jazz pieces...
I suggest you wach JAZZ, the documentary by Ken Burns, there will you really begin to appreciate everything about this chaotic, beautiful, the list can go on forever....
As for other jazz tunes/ artists to check out.... Miles is my favorite, if you want to get beyond his first few albums, the "Cool" era , Sketches in Spain (then check out a lot of DJ PRemier's samples, a la Jeru the Damija)and more into his fusion stuff and the avant g stuff I recomend, '*****es Brew' and Vargus, live at Carnegie hall, Dee Bop (his last album) was really hittin stride with HIp Hop, more fusion stuff.
Other than Miles, I would check out Charles Mingus (Haitian Fight Song is insane)...Dexter Gordon.....Charlie PArker, of course.........Artie Shaw......John Coltrane.....
the list goes on....try and see if your local library has the Ken Burns documentary, good place to start
