View Full Version : Netherlands: political youth groups support union busting

Today, there was a big news report in the media that three political youth groups have called upon all young members of the social-democratic union federation FNV to leave the union.

The reason is that the government's response to the crisis has been "too weak" and that this is the case because of pressure from the trade unions. These groups claim that this "union pressure" has caused the government to not be decisive enough in forcing people to work until 67, and that "young people are now paying for old pensioners", the idea being, of course, that it's all the fault of those lazy old people. A typical move that is often used to divide the working class by age.

The groups participating in this action are the youth groups of the liberal/conservative VVD, the left-liberal Democrats, but also the "left" Green party. They have set up a special action where anyone who cancels their union membership will get free membership for one of these groups. This may appeal to a particular brand of class traitors, because everyone knows the true meaning of participating in such an action: abandoning working class organisation for the ability to drink lots of beer for a few years and get a nice bit of experience for your resumé before starting your parliamentary career...

What else needs to be said? Of course, no apologies should be made for union bureaucracy, who have been selling us out for decades under the "consensus-based" collective bargaining. But the grievances that these groups, including "left" ones, have with the unions is that they are doing too much to hold on to the gains of workers' struggle that are already under heavy attack from all sides!

This isn't the first time one of these groups showed its colours. The Democrat youth group once founded a "youth union" a few years ago, also to distance itself from the FNV. Apparently, it never took off, I certainly haven't heard anything from it. But it was definitely very well accepted by all the right-wing parties and the media.

So in short, fuck them!

Flipin heck, whats wrong with the kids of the Nederlands? I cannot believe that they are complaining about having to pay for pentions (via tax i take it). How forward thinking, I bet they all believe that they are going to grow up to be millionaires or something, lol. Little do they realise that taking these kinds of actions at their age could seriously come back to bit them in the ass when THEY are pensioners.

It's not so much "kids", it's just the youth orgs of specific factions of bourgeois politics making these statements. But even considering that, it's disappointing that not only conservatives, but also liberal "left" and reformist/green "left" groups are now openly anti-union. It used to be that at least some lip service had to be paid to organised labour, but those times are now over.

In times of individualisation and the destruction of the limited gains of collective bargaining, and attempts to destroy collective bargaining itself, apparently it's the right moment for these groups to play the populist "we're tired of paying for the old guys" card... More disappointing than really surprising, if you get my meaning.

It aint so bad..its showing that the right are more like sheep and clueless that they (the right) see us (and they really do thing they are 100% more intelligent than we are). I mean this is kind of funny if you know where im coming from...are they THAT up themselves? Do they even know what a Union is, are who they stand up for? Selfish kids of today eh:lol:

Reactionary rich boys and girls are propagating for people to work longer.

Lets have them work in a factory or clean up garbage for 30 years and see if they still have that opinion by then. Fucktards.

If I were the unions, i'd call for those youth organizations to be disbanded.

There was a funny phone conversation when a union militant called one of those liberal youth orgs to ask for mediation in a labour conflict. He soon got to talk to the chairman of this organisation, who hilariously confirmed what everyone already knew. Question: "Oh, so you don't work for the interests of young workers?" Answer: "Absolutely not!"

They did call the most free-market liberal party though. I wonder what the other two would say, since they at least claim to be worker's parties.

Oh? D66 certainly doesn't affiliate itself as a workers party and also for GreenLeft their communist roots have long since been forgotten...

Oh, D66. For some reason I was thinking about PvdA, which still claims to be a workers party, even though they're definitely not.

Also GreenLeft might have forgotten its communist roots but they're still one of the most, if not the most leftwing mainstream party. This move surprises me.

No the SP is the most leftwing mainstream party, no doubt about it

For a while, I had even more respect for the Greenies, because the SP's nationalist tendencies can be a real turn-off sometimes. But at least in this case, the SP youth has also reacted negatively to these scab pricks.

i doubt there is much to worry about as most kids have trouble enough to identify the political party's that fathered these "youth organizations"

actually the FNV should be far more concerned about their own failure to reach the youth in the netherlands.

Its funny to see the traditional labour parties in places breaking ties with unions , here in Ireland the labour party voted on cutting out unions say in their policies . I'm not sure if this is good or bad really . Maybe the unions will wake up soon enough
