Intense search efforts failed to find the missing helicopter more than 24 hours after it crashed in southeastern Turkey carrying the leader of a far-right party, as hopes of finding survivors fade. (UPDATED)

A helicopter carrying six people, including Muhsin Yazicioglu, leader of the Great Unity Party (BBP), crashed Wednesday at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) in the Goksun district of the Kahramanmaras province.

Hundreds of gendarmerie forces, villagers and village guards, as well as party members are among those taking part in the search and rescue efforts. Officials say harsh weather conditions hamper rescue efforts in the mountainous area where the search is underway.

There is no signal coming from the helicopter, Interior Minister Besir Atalay told a press conference. "We hope we can find them alive," Atalay said. "We’re doing our best."

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan arrived Thursday in Kahramanmaras, while Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan cut short his formal visit to Tunisia, and decided to return to Turkey.

Many political parties, including Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), as well as the Felicity Party (SP) canceled their election rallies scheduled for Thursday.

A recording of a phone conversation between a reporter from the private Ihlas News Agency and the emergency services was released early Thursday.

According to a recording broadcast on TV channels, Ismail Gunes told an emergency service officer that his leg was broken and that "everybody else on the helicopter seems to be dead."

BBP officials urged the government to step up search and rescue efforts, while a number of party members protested Interior Minister Besir Atalay, who visited the region, over the failure of efforts to locate the crash site almost 20 hours after the accident.

How very tragic, it always hits the best people: first Haider in this terrible car accident and now this wonderful man. :crying:
(I know this is mean but I just couldn't resist. ;))

Guess what my dad said when he heard about this: "First Haider, now him... well I think there's something fishy."

Haider. Lol. He was on the right. Too fucking far on the right. So far on the right he went off of the side of the road and crahed. Shame.

And now the chopper goes down with this fascist in it. I wonder if it'd be worth sending Nick Griffin an ticket to a free chopper ride in Turkey?

Recently though there was a case of a helicopter in the UK going down carrying some oil refinery workers from their rig to the mainland crashing and they all died :(.

If only that helicopter too had been full of the fascist scum instead of workers .

Oh, they found him dead in the end. He really wasn't a nice man. He was probably most famed for organising a pogrom, which killed over a hundred members of a religious minority. The sort that makes the BNP Griffen look almost like a nice guy.

The funeral was on Monday. Thousands of people were there. Both Leo and I were late for work because of it.

It reminded me of Alparslan Türkeş' funeral about ten years ago (I was really late for work that day). He was the grand old man of Turkish fascism. It was reported that there were about 5,000,000 people on the streets for his funeral. It must have been exagerated, but the fact that you can even claim a figure like that shows there were a lot.

Good riddance then. Is this what they refer to as karma?

This is brilliant news, he was a really evil man and his party and those around that are sick bastards.

When I was younger I can recall seeing what looked like the grey wolves logo on one lad in a group of young Turkish men down Green Lanes. There's a lot of extreme sectarian racial violence between many different minorities there, but some of the worst is between Turks and Kurds (often PKK affiliated).
