(AP) - Layne Staley, lead singer and guitarist for the grunge band Alice in Chains, was found dead in his apartment, authorities said Saturday. He was 34. Tests were required to establish the identity because the body, discovered Friday, had started to decompose. The King County Medical Examiner's office did not release his cause of death.

Wow. Are you shitting me? I haven't heard that. It's really sad . . . I guess it explains the song "We Die Young". But damn!
WHY SO YOUNG, LAYNE?
What are the chances he died of a heroin overdose?

Well, it's about time the guy died. I mean, I'm a huge Alice in Chains fan, but the man's been a vegetable for years now. It's felt like he's been dead since 1996 or so. I'm pretty sure that he died of a heroin overdose.

I think the chances are great.
I watched a report from KOMO 4 News, one of the U$ channels we get up here in Canada. They said that King County Sheriff officials stated that, "Signs of drug use were obvious." But nothing more was said.

That does suck, BIGTIME. Alice in Chains were undoubtedly the best grunge band. I think we may as well assume it was a heroin OD....

Well, he'll rise to Cobain status now. Alice In Chains albums will sell like wildfire too. You'd think Billy Corgan wouldn't have lived so long either, I always thought of him as an eventual suicide.
Anyone think Layne's death was intentional?

Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you here alone...
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you here alone...
If I would, could you?
I've been listening to Alice In Chains all day. And it's really hit me now who has left...
I am really going to miss Layne, I always loved his voice and his talent. Definitely among the best rockers of my generation.
I'm the man in the box,
Buried in my shit,
Won't you come and save me, save me...

Don't say that. You might jinx it. Hes now the only vocalist of the top 3 grunge bands (Nirvana, AIC, Soundgarden) who hasnt died.
By the way, didnt Sublimes vocalist also die of heroin overdose, anyone?
Anyhow, it really feels weird that a cat I was listening madly to a few months ago is dead. Long live AIC.

El Brujo - actually Billy Corgan's the singer in the Pumpkins, not Soundgarden. I think you mean Chris Cornell...
"So take another hit and bury your brother and we die young"
What a beautiful band...I loved their music so much.

It really suck AIC singer died. AIC was such a great band. I'm almost a honder procent sure he died of heroine. He was using it for a real long time because of his depressions and other things. AIC was one of the best grunge bands ever. I thought Scott of STP would die before him. But AIC inspired lot's of rock bands these days. bands like Creed and Life House are still trying to cope the voice of Lane. It's a real shame that there aren't too much real grunge bands left. I'm really pleased by the fact that Pearl Jam is producing a new album and their gonna tour again too.
Sad very very sad!
this is a terrible lost...

It's very sad, but the only thing that surprised me, like many of you already said, is that he lived as long as he did.
One time I was talking drug abusing rockstars with a very well informed friend of mine and mentioned that I thought Keith Richards was probably the most serious drug abuser to still be alive, even though he really cut down. He laughed at my ignorance and said I've obviously never heard any first-hand accounts of Staley's heroin abuse. Apparently the guy ran out of viable veins in the mid-nineties and shot up in his knuckles the last few years.
He was a great talent, it's the sad way of life that so many great people end up being destroyed by the very mind that made them great :(
RIP

I am a grunger and I'm about to curl over and die, I'm so sad!!! No, I'm joking but seriously, Alice in chains was such a fucking awesome band. Along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden Stone Temple Pilots, Sonic Youth and Mudhoney, Alice In Chains was one of my favorite bands.
WAIT! Alice In Chains wasnt communist or socialist. Why is he on this web site???? whatever. They're so kool it doesn't matter. whatever

DAMMIT! Next to nirvana, AIC was the best. Layne died of heroin, and so did sublimes singer. FUCK DRUGS. It seems like every day an awesome actor or musician is found dead of heroin or some crazy shit.
