G' day compañero - I can't say that I have heard much about the bands you have posted (apart from Nirvana - Kurt Cobain's suicide was a cop-out, Sonic Youth and the Ramones).
My musical tastes are diverse as Litfiba (Italian) to AC/DC, Bob Dylan to Bob Marley, Slim Dusty to Deep Purple.

My musical taste is much more broad than anyone elses' that I know. I really don't listen to much of anything with a political message though. These aren't in any sort of order and they're people or groups that I really enjoy a lot. Oh well... Here goes nothing:
Miles Davis
Maxwell
Ozomatli
Billie Holiday
Bob Marley
Ibrahim Ferrer
Beny Moré
Afro-Cuban All Stars
Portishead
Nortec Collective
Omara Portuondo
POD
Thelonious Monk
João Gilberto
Nelly Furtado
Eliades Ochoa
Jill Scott
WAR
Fugees
Don't make fun of me!
Anyone else like any of these artists? (I doubt it..)
I Will Deny You
11th February 2002, 02:48
I know I shouldn't make fun of you, but Maxwell is a wacko. He's not neo-soul, he's neo-soundtrack for black romantic comedy.
I feel like a total ***** now. :( Sorry, I hope you can forgive me and I'm too lazy to bring my damned fingers up to the backspace key . . .
So I guess you'd hate me even more if I shared my feelings on POD.
But The Fugees are good, though. I saw them in concert before Hill released her own album and Nas sang that awful Ghetto Superstar song with the un-ghetto, extremely suburban Mya. You know--when they were still together. They were great.
Jill Scott's good, but not too original.
Are you sure you don't mean GWAR? :)
(I'm using way too many smiley faces today.
I love the Long Beach Dub All Stars. Fucking geniuses, they are.
Rancid and Operation Ivy annoy the living shit out of me. So many kids at my college love them . . . I wonder if they know that all of their albums are being bought by oh-so-"establishment" college students. On occasion, I feel that I have reason to wonder if they care.
Antiflag is, at least, better than Black Flag. That Henry Rollins scares me. He's the steriods-buying man's Chris Meloni.
Nirvana is, for the millionth time, not that great. The only good band to come out of Seattle in the early to mid 90's was Alice in Chains, and they're not a grunge band, anyway.
The Ramones are fun. I don't know most punk bands, though. I went to a few of the free Fugazi concerts and I can't stop hearing about Bad Brains (DC's finest). I hear this city used to have a punk scene in the 80's, and--just my luck!--I moved here in the very early 90's. I'd really like to hear some of the musical stylings of Leftover Crack, though.
As usual (you just knew I had to say this), Bob Marley has my approval and Rage Against the Machine does not. I love to be anti-corporate culture, but I will not be anti-corporate culture by buying an overpriced album distributed by Sony Music, thankyouverymuch.

It's OK, I'm not upsetted (hmmm).. I do like Maxwell though. He's good, in my opinion but he has been on one too many soundtracks (Love & Basketball, Life, and what else?). I really don't know why I like POD though.. Their songs are really catchy, I suppose ;)
No, I mean War, the "Lowrider" guys, ya know? Their songs just make ya feel good... :)

Ever heard of subverting the system within?? I posted about this subject less than a week ago. They have a message, which they want to spread as far as possible, cos the more people fighting social and political injustices the better right?? So if the best way to spread that message is by signing to a major label, then so be it!! I mean, it's not like they're Limp fucking Bizkit is it??

Jello Biafra Attacked
By Michael Goldberg.
(Rolling Stone, 7/14/94 & 7/28/94 Issue 686-687, p26)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Veteran punk rocker and spoken-word artist Jello Biafra was attacked and seriously injured by a group of young men at Gilman Street, a Berkeley, Calif., punk club, on May 7 [1994]. One of Biafra's legs was broken, and he sustained extensive damage to the ligaments of one knee as well as a superficial head wound. Berkeley police are currently investigating the incident, but there have been no arrests.
"It may well have destroyed my chances of performing music live the way I want to," said Biafra, who is recuperating at his San Francisco home. "if I can't get the knee to come back. I don't just want to stand there and bore everyone to death."
Biafra, the former leader of the Dead Kennedys, was watching a show by the Fixtures when, according to Biafra, a slam dancer crashed through the crowd, landing on Biafra's leg and breaking it. "I asked him for an ID so I could deal with it and leave the cops out of it," said Biafra. "He laughed."
According to Biafra, the slam dancer, whose nickname is Creton, said, "Well, you're such a rich rock star, you can deal with it yourself."
An argument insued. By Biafra's account, Creton then pushed him to the floor: "All of his friends - five or six thugs - jumped on me and kicked me in the head from both sides. As they kicked me, they were yelling, 'Sellout rock star, kick him.'"
Because of the injuries, Biafra was forced to cancel an upcoming spoken-word tour of western Canada. He had planned to tape his shows for use on a spoken-word album that was to be his next release on Alternative Tentacles, the punk label he owns. "Now I don't have those recordings," said Biafra. His most recent album was Prairie Home Invasion, a collaboration with Mojo Nixon relaesed this past March.

I have such a wide taste in music that its taken me ages to even contemplate writing a list, but im bored now and have the time to do it.
The two bands i love the most in the world is a good place to start :
The Cure
The Smiths
Without these bands i wouldnt be able to get through the day. Im always listening to them, and i cant emphasise that enough. Then i have my general love of alt-rock, not to heavy and still good :
Placebo
Manic Street Preachers
Pixies
Nirvana
Throwing Muses
Smashing Pumpkins
Kill Hannah
Tool
Rammstein
... loads more.
I dont really like heavy metal, thats the one thing i will admit to. Some stuff is alrught, but i wouldnt buy it. Korn are ok in small doses, and Linkin Park are slightly respectable .... ish ... maybe.
Boy Hits Car are nice ... i copied their album.
Then i love electronica, dance, trance, stuff like that :
NIN
Aphex Twin
Depeche Mode
Boards Of Canada
Bjork
certain Radiohead tracks.
EBM music (Front 242, VNV Nation)
Then there is punk, im not a massive fan but i like some of it. My favourite bands include The Clash, The Undertones, Sex Pistols to a certain degree.
Then i like blues, Jeff Buckley, BB King, Clapton. Then 60's rock 'n' roll, Beatles, Doors, Cat Stevens (an amazing acoustic artist and he made one of my favourite albums of all time.) Shit i like so much its hard to write it all down. :)
I'll post again when i have searched my CD collection for bands i forgot. Future things i want to listen to are Sonic Youth, i have a few of their albums on order so when they come through i shall see what i think.
Zippy. :)

Urrrgghhh...The Smiths. Sorry I suffer a horrible allergy to indie.
All you "alternative" Brits out there: what do you reckon to the current UK rock scene?? It looks stronger than ever if you ask me...lostprophets, Vex Red, 'A', The Cooper Temple Clause, One Minute Silence etc etc. Looks like we might finally be shaking off the horrendous Britpop/drony indie tag.
Zippy
16th March 2002, 22:15
The UK rock scene is full of post-American nu-metal toss. You may mock indie, but thats what made Britain great. The Smiths were British through-and-through; Lost Prophets i respect, but its made for an American market. Everytime people listen to bands like Vex Red they are murdering part of their own culture.
I feel passionately about this, can you tell ? :)
Culture aside, the music isnt bad. Vex Red is ok, Lost Prophets are tolerable (and i respect them for being Star Trek fans), OMS are political so the music is irelevant and there are a few other bands out there that make nice music.
I just feel British music is made for our transatlantic-friends at the minute. Oasis were the last British rock band to shake Britain and America ignored them, so the record industry thought "fuck that, we want another U2" so they swamp our charts with their music. A shame really. British indie is dying.
Best British band around at the minute: Idlewild. Check them out.

Indie made Britain grate?? That's subjective opinion, so there's little point in debating it.
It's very cynical to dismiss all UK rock as postnumetal (does such a thing exist??). I mean, lostprophets have been around for aaaaages, and sound more emo-punk than metal, Vex Red lean more towards grunge-industrial-rock. OMS rip off RATM a bit too much for my liking but I saw em supporting the great Slipknot (haha) in London last month and they rocked.
The last UK rock band to shake the American charts was Bush, who I think are fucking terrible. They were cashing in off the search for a new Nirvana. I don't think America really got the whole idea behind Britpop, but I don't think they missed much.

the happy mondays

i am guessing that most of you havent heard of most of these bands, that is becuase most of them arent around anymore. which leads me to my point, most music is a transcient mode of expressing feeling and thoughts, it is really not supposed to last forever. very few bands are remember after a certain length of time. to bracket the smiths into the indie genre i find silly. the smiths were out of the scene before indie became popular, the cure are not an "indie band" because they are on a major label. most of the bands listed on this site probably dont belong to a major label(so does that make them indie, no). why do we have to bracket music into little grouping. Because it makes it easier for the shops and mags to sell it to the unimformed public who buy music becuase its trendy, not because they like it. would you agree.
i love music and i feel passionate about it, my tastes range from classical to system of the down, quite wide a range i believe. all music enriches the soul and if it activates poeples minds in to searching for answers or just makes poeple happy its doing what it is supposed to do. this is why i believe no music is crap becuase it has a different reaction when each indivdual listens to it.
thats my rant have yours please

My next door neighbour used to know Jarvis Cocker when they were kids. He came up and asked to be in her band and she said no, so he went and made his own. See what rejection can do for you ? :)
I have met him once aswell but it was only brief. If your confused, im from Sheffield. :)
Ride and My Bloody Valentine are good. Lemonheads are ok and i saw Evan Dando at reading, which passed 40 minutes.
Happy Mondays i dont really like, but i respect. Mancunians who went to Ibiza and took E arent really that high in my list of "cool" people.
--------
So i shall take my rant now, if i may. *smiles*
I class indie music not by label but by the fact that it isnt made to get to number 1. Oasis are an indie band, they want to sell albums and not singles, even though they are on a semi-major label. Indie music started off has independant but all record companies have the same aim, to make money, so its never has simple as major label vs indie labels.
The only true indie labels around are the ones run by musicians themselves. Chemical Underground (Mogwai, Arab Strap) are a massive indie label, but they still need to make a profit to continue running. But i agree with what you say, people are too eager to slap a genre on music so they can identify it. I love bands that cross 16 genres and still confuse the media, Moloko did wonderfully at this.
But i disagree on other facts, some music is crap. The kind of music that is generic and boring and dulls thought. Where boys thinking about getting a shag and girls think about looking pretty and finding a nice man, that is crap music.
Rock music is also crap when its dull. It has to be exciting and bands like Nickelback just dont move me at all, its so dull. I respect it more than pop but it doesnt make it good.
As with all cases in my life, i didnt get half the points i wanted to across and those i did attempt i failed miserably with, but im sure you slightly understand what im trying to say. :)

zippy i think we are really on the same wave level and i pay you much respect for your veiws, what i was trying to say was that music is so very personel, so its really a opinion what is crap or not, as you have said before your opinion is 100% and that is true of you. the problem that i have is that all crap music in my opinion gets high in the charts and the real music gets nowhere. i love music passionately it is the nectar which nourishes my soul. thanx for answering a question for me, i was wondering where u were from. i am originally from the north east, a small town called south shields.
i am also into the dance scence a little(just starting really) i really into deep house at the moment
ben watt(ebtg) has a great club called lazy dog and the cd is brilliant
i am also off to see faithless in a couple of weeks

i don't want to offend anyone, but I believe that dance music has no soul. Unless you are up there putting your heart and soul into your instrument and music, its not true music. Pop is just like trance and the like.
But this is just my opinion, feel free to flame me if you wish.

I like trance, but I'm not offended because I understand what you mean. Actually, I just think it's good to dance to. The techno/trance/whatever I like is typically stuff that is ethnic, for example, Nortec Collective. It's a mix of techno/trace and various Mexican styles of music. Gotan Project is nice too. It mixes techno/trance with tango sounds. Also, I downloaded an MP3 of some Greek dance music and it was cool too.

Guitar-based facism is so ugly. The Happy Mondays formulated early dance music and they used instruments.

Good dance music is artists who attempt to spread the boundaries. The Prodigy tried (and I think succeeded) to mix punk, house and rave and DJ Shadow seems to be able to mix hip-hop, jazz, drum n bass, house, classical, fuck it, every fuckin genre into his music!! You guys wanna check out Leftfield too, they're very good, although they just split...

Good dance music is artists who attempt to spread the boundaries.I agree wholeheartedly, guerrillaradio. That's why I'm into that Latin sounding stuff because it's so different and not everyone can do that.. It's not everyday you hear Latin-tinged techno/trance.
Anyone know Los Chicharrons? It's like techno-house-dance.
What about Eyedentity? It's trip-hoppy, like Portishead (I know a lot of ya'll like them). Check them out. You can DL them at Audiogalaxy. They've got a few extra-good songs called "R U Afraid," "Terra Mae," & "7th Dimension."
And, anyone listen to Povi or Goldfrapp? They're pretty cool as well. Goldfrapp's from Bath.

I know Portishead (they're huge over here) and Goldfrapp. Respect to both those artists, even if I'm not too keen on their music. I recommend you all check out DJ Shadow cos he's amazing. Whatever music you like you'll like him. Check out Entroducing, it's his best record...

The only band i can think of is "One Minute Silence", a politically motivated British metal band. Check them out if you like that kind of stuff. :)

Dance music does not have soul, you are exactly right. That does not necassarily mean it is not good tho. I like it because it arises feelings in me and is a great accompaniment to anime and action.

Lots of Top 40-ish dance music sucks (and isn't even good to dance to) but good jazz music has plenty of soul and is wonderful for dancing.
