_*The bitter taste of Del Monte's pineapples*_
Do you like pineapples? I do. But next time you bite into a Del Monte
pineapple you might find it tastes a lot less sweet. For a year now,
plantation workers in Costa Rica who grow pineapples for the giant fruit
company have been harassed and deprived of their basic human right to
join a trade union. Many have been laid off including some who are
suspected of pro-union sentiments. Their union is asking for all of us
to take a minute and tell Del Monte that it's time to respect their
rights, to negotiate with the union and reinstate the dismissed workers.

_*Iran: Trade union leader arrested*_
Trade unionist Ali Nejati (one of the leaders of the Haft Tapeh Sugar
Cane Company trade union) was arrested on 8 March by Ministry of
Intelligence officers. Amnesty International considers him a prisoner of
conscience, detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to
freedom of expression and association, and is campaigning for his
release. For more details and to send out your message of protest,

_*New book: Global unions, Global business*_
*Global Unions, Global Business*, published last month, is "the
essential guide to international trade unionism: its actors, its
structure, its history, its functions, its activities," says Dan Gallin
of the Global Labour Institute. He adds: "I know of no other recent
book that details as clearly what the international trade union movement
actually does and why it is important for workers everywhere." Learn

copy you order helps support LabourStart's campaigning activities.
Thank you.
