I guess revealing that I actually like Britney Spears and Westlife isn't really politically correct here... All my friends tease me for my lousy taste in music - are there anyone else with the same problem?
I realise that the music stinks, everything is commercialised to the bone, the message in the text (if any..) is not something I agree with at all (love between two persons, male and female, where the guy is dominant (although soft and tender...) and the girl is suppressed and willing to do anything for him, is the only right thing - no way!) but I still like it!!
Give me some advise - either on how to handle the harrassment, or how to get a new taste of music... and I'll be forever grateful...
(PS: I like the guy who sings about Bill's dick, the longhairedradicalsocialist jew (jesus) and lots of other fantastic songs... who is he??)

mmm, I did manage to transform a girl from "radio friendly" music to a more Alternative style but let's see...where do you live ? there are lots of "serious" music magazines who can guide you a bit. what kind of things are you interested in ? it's hard this way, I need more information.

personally what influenzed my musical tastes most was acess to the internet.
With MP3 format and sharing programs like morpheus, winmx, kazaa or audiogalaxy and mp3 trading communities you can get almost anything and give it a listen.
To get ideas of what to download just visit some internet based music-review pages, or read forums that discuss music.
and try to let the music grow on you, it may not be as easily digested as britney is ;)

Well I like Ocean Colour Scene, Nirvana, Placebo, Radiohead and some other bands. I like quite a wide spectrum but I can't stand R&B and rap, it's just so fake and talentless.

You can start out softly with The Strokes, Nirvana,Pearl Jam,Arrested Develoment. Then you could move into a little harder area. Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, Amen.
Or you could find your local punk scene. Just find a close city. Go to the dirtiest most industrial wasted part and look for clubs and bars. you're bound to find some great punk or any other music. You don't even need a city. Just look out for flyers for local concerts and punks. You'll have a good time. I promise

ok, first off, follow july26's instructions, then look for mp3s by the unseen, hopeless dregs of humanity, and crass, and then go out and buy the most recent issue of maximumrocknroll.

perhaps you should make your change more gradual. if you go from one extreme to another, you could snap like a rubber band. so listen to the ramones, they're a happy, albeit apolitical middle.

Music is an art form. Follow your heart and listen to what you want to, and what makes you happy.
Its OK to like Britney, aslong as you do it for your own honest reasons. Inside the alternative/metal scene a lot of snobbery as evolved, its only cool to like a certain band at a certain time. Fuck that - i will listen to what I want when I want to.
Plus, there is nothing wrong with having Korn, Westlife, Machine Head and Kylie Minogue - all in one record collection. :)
Zippy - currently digging The Smiths. *grins*

Well i had the same problem too.Ok not exactly like yours but something like that. Before some months i came over it and i can tell you that it was very easy.At the begining i started listening Him. Later i listened Scorpions,Deep Purple,Pink Floyd ... The group that impressed me much it was the Mega Death... After this i forgot the pop music at once.Well if i want to be truly honest i still have pop cd's in my house and i hear to the sometimes but deep inside of me they mean nothing to me.I believe you can get over thisit is very easy.At last is your choise and everyone have to respect it .

It's Megadeth...
Don't see no problem here.No man can tell others what to listen to.You listen to whatever you like and that's it.
Everything is music.Good and bad...
